The summers were hot, the old box aircon flat out, the beers were cold. Dean Jones was fast between wickets. This feels like yesterday , life is short. Thanks for upload mate.

Remember this match well. It was Australia's 1st win over the Windies that summer. They'd lost the 1st 2 ODIs as well as being 3-0 down in the tests. Dean Jones had been dropped at the start of the series & was fighting his way back into the side. The Windies were a bit stiff being docked an over for slow over rates despite bowling the Aussies out within the scheduled time & the famous Steve Waugh catch should have been a 6 as he ran behind the sight screen. Still what a great match in front of a monster crowd. ODIs today just don't have the same magic like these did.

Great memory! They belted us all through 1988 and then starting with this game the tide turned. We won the Sydney test and the first final and should have won the third final too. By then we were battle tough and monstered England famously in the Ashes. I firmly believe 1988/89 summer set us up for the glory of the nineties

Geez I remember being a kid listening on the radio due to the blackout after 30 overs

Been watching a lot of these old ODIs lately. Amazing how much the 50 over game has evolved. I know the bats are better and the fields of play smaller but the fact that a score of 226 was considered an acceptable and defendable total looks ridiculous now. A bloke like Geoff Marsh used to often bat deep into the innings, get out for 75 off 140 balls and be considered a hugely valuable ODI sheet anchor batsman. Anyone with that strike rate now would be dropped back to club cricket! The other striking difference is the actual popularity of this form of the game. Cricket Australia couldn’t lure a decent turn up to a ODI these days with all the tea in China. The fall from first to a long third in the cricket pecking order has been dramatic for the old 50 over game.

You make some good points all of whuch i agree with as i have been saying them in recent years. People these days dont want to spend all day at the cricket, more entertainment options thesedays.

I really miss these games. The bats have only hurt the contests in the modern era. I hate 20/20. It’s boring

Australia got caught out (no pun intended) in a few areas in the 1992 World Cup. One being playing the “226 is ok” game when other countries that started with the faster start with the designated hitter going for the higher score style.
