The final part of “Nick Arcade” was the best part of the show. However, the kids’ final boss was actually one of three characters: Mongo (that big bulky guy you mentioned), Merlock (an evil Merlin-type wizard), or Scorchia (a fiery sorceress).

The order that I remember seeing them being challenged (not counting their cameos in the opening sequence) was Merlock, then Scorchia, then Mongo.

So Mongo only pawn in game of Nick Arcade.

This was always a sign you were in for a great episode.

The thirst is real with these guys. Calm down its just a woman I've sure you've seen one before on TV. Your mom is even a woman I know crazy stuff. She's also probably much more likely to date you than this young lady so maybe go be weird somewhere else.

I remember this show. I felt like i was the only one who watched it because nobody got up that early to watch it. I always wondered why Johnny was so excited, but the kids were like dead. It's as though Johnny sucked the life out of all the contestants, and put their enthusiasm into him. It was really weird. You should get Johnny arcade on the show and interview him. Their should be a documentary about this show. I'd like to know the backstory behind it.

I was actually astonished when I caught an episode into a very late season, wondering how that show was still on the air... They had the same theme music playing all the way through the show, the same look, the same segments, the same host, and always said the same things when going into a segment ("It's letter time, it's letter time!") I feel like someone would go insane doing the same thing over and over for 15 years!

Half that show's budget clearly went to Johnny Arcade's coke dealer. There were a lot of coked-up celebrities in the 80s & 90s, but this guy was doing laps around them.

Here in Sweden we had a TV show which I can't remember the name of, but where kids called in in order to control a game called "Hugo the TV Troll" via the keypad on their home phones, and competed to see who finished the quickest (or failed last). Of course, I soon got the home computer version for my Macintosh.

Nick Arcade used to blow my mind as well. I could never figure out how it was possible for them to be inside the game. When I was little, I thought they really went into a video game world. As I got a little older, I was aware that they obviously weren't inside a video game, but I still couldn't fathom just how they did it.

If you haven't already done so, I would absolutely LOVE to see you review the television show GamePro TV. It was a television show based on a popular video game magazine that I used to subscribe to. The magazine was everything that you would ever want from a video game magazine. It had reviews, it had April Fool's video game pranks, and if I'm remembering correctly it even had freaking posters, so naturally, the TV version of it was insanely cool as well. It was hosted by JD Roth and some other guy and I can't remember if this other guy stuck around for later seasons, but I just remember JD Roth in later seasons, probably because JD Roth was the down to Earth cool guy like the host of Nick Arcade, while the other guy was somewhat like the host of Video Power, in that he he portrayed a character. I recorded at least one episode (or some of an episode) on VHS, which I'm sure by now has been erased over.

GrahfMetal pretty much like just about every single person watching a game show or sporting event ever, you aren’t seeing what they see so you get the chance to think it through and can assess the situation overall and often come to a different conclusion. Combine that with the fact that at the age of 10 or 12 you start to become more self aware thus think you know it all. In a nutshell, you weren’t better.

We had a live action video game type show here in the UK that was on ITV after school. It was called nightmare and the contestant in the game would ware a big helmet obscuring their vision whilst the other contestants would tell them which direction to go in and what to do in each room. The host was a middle aged man with a beard dressed in medieval attire. I think that he was either called the dungeon master or the dungeon keeper. Either way the show was great.

I'm about 8 years older than James, so in 1992 I was moved out/living on my own, and while I did play games I didn't watch TV (never had TV service after moving out, stuck with VHS tapes, later DVD's, and now downloaded stuff). I do remember something from the early/mid 80's where people would compete on a game show on arcade games. They were timed and it was usually who could compete a level the fastest or get the highest score. These were things like Tempest, Galaga, early 80's arcade games. Can't for the life of me remember the name of it though.
