    I'm a Eagle, class of 2001. I was wondering if there is a guy named Bob White who might be a bobwhite. That would be funny.
    I also see that the critters are different in other countries. Any information on that?

      Yes, the 2006 Central Florida class the Bobwhites Patrol had Mr. Robert (Bob) White. I know of one Mr. Foxx in the Fox Patrol and a Mr. Bear in the Bear Patrol (all in different years). Everyone “claims” it was a total mistake but I think they were just looking for irony. Because it wouldn't be funny if Mr. Foxx was a Buffalo. I believe that the “Wood Badge Order” was set forth from the original Wood Badge training in Gilwell Park England. The 8 standard Patrols of Troop 1 have been maintained for the past 60 years by the BSA in the United States. Other countries are free to make changes to the course as they see fit or deem necessary. I like tradition but, this is a Scouting movement so eventually, I believe something will change in time. Thank you so much for the question and yes… it is funny. YIS⚜

    what are the "extra beads" above the knot? also "I used to be a Fox"!

      In Wood Badge you receive 2 beads when you finish your ticket. When you go on staff at Wood Badge you get an additional bead, a total of 3. If you run a course you get an additional bead with a total of 4. National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is very closely related to Wood Badge. If you staff an NYLT course you get an additional Wood Badge bead bringing the maximum for this to 3. In my council, there are “beads” which are miniature waggles that are placed on the lanyard of the Wood Badge. If you have staffed both Wood Badge and NYLT these miniature woggles may have different colors for the staffing level. When I went through Wood Badge my patrol was the Bobwhites. When I staffed Wood Badge as a troop guide for the Owl patrol I was adopted and became a Bowel. Thank you so much for the question. YIS⚜

    I finally completed my wood badge training, I should get my beads in a couple of months :D But we don't have critters here (I'm part of British Scouting Overseas).

      The British Wood Badge is slightly different in its structure however, the goal is the same. “ *_Every Scout deserves a trained leader.”_* The Baden-Powell Wood Badge was adapted for American Scouting back in the 40s. It has undergone several revisions over time. This is true with many different countries within the World Organization of the Scouting Movement (WOSM). All countries recognize Wood Badge trained leaders regardless of the training location and syllabus. Congratulations on completing your Wood Badge training. YIS⚜

    Hi Scouter Stan,
    Just wrapped up week one of Wood Badge training and absolutely loved it. I was assigned to the Eagle patrol and here is my question to you:
    I was not a scout in my youth. It wasn't until my son started in Cub Scouts that I got involved and eventually became a leader. I saw Wood Badge as an excellent opportunity to put myself in a scout's shoes and improve my leadership skills. I really want to embrace my critter and show off my patrol pride. With no scouting experience as a youth, Obviously I am not an Eagle Scout. I hesitate to embrace my critter for fear of being accused of Stolen Valor. Is this a valid concern?

    • @ScouterStan
      @ScouterStan  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not to worry there's a big difference between the Wood Badge Eagle Patrol and Eagle Scouts. The American Bald Eagle is the symbol of our beautiful country. Wearing it with pride is very admirable and patriotic for everyone. Eagle Scouts do not have exclusive use of this emblem within Scouting. Of course, the line is drawn in relation to the adult leader Eagle Scout square knot. Other than that, wear anything that your patrol has put together with pride. YIS⚜

    Our scouts are not forced to have 'critters' when forming patrols why are we forcing critters as part of our training program? Let the patrols pick what they want. If people still want to have patrols based on critters, let them name the critter what they want. So you can have the Atomic Beavers or the Scheming Eagles, etc.. and still have the Gillwell song.

      Good point but I like the tradition of it all. In a world that’s constantly changing, it's nice to be a part of something traditional. YIS🦉

    As a Bear, I must correct your statement at 1:39 that of four original patrol names, none of them remain. Bear is the sole survivor in the BSA Wood Badge program. Of course, that is only right. Also, when assigning patrols, it is best to mix up the participants based on their position of responsibility. The guide says if you have to have a minimum of five scouters per patrol, and if you have to cut patrols, you must start from the Antelopes back. Sadly the most recent course version states that critter pride is not to be stressed.

      Yeah, we messed up in scripting and only realize the mistake just after editing. There's a note in the below section of the video in regards to the “Boo Boo”. I heard that they were downplaying critters in the new Wood Badge. Hopefully, they don't just start numbering the patrols as that would be kind of boring as a song. YIS⚜

      Just finished my first weekend as part of fox 🦊 patrol. Its funny how our patrol personality somehow fits with our critter. Clever or sly (depending on your perspective), loud, playful, boisterous.

    Rumor has it they were thinking of dropping critters. Any truth to that? In NYLT they don't use critters like wooodbadge why not?

    • @ScouterStan
      @ScouterStan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would be a real shame if we lose the critter patrols. Wood Badge was originally developed to teach adult leaders how patrols work. Each patrol had a critter that helped members rally around. The sense of pride and community within the patrol is essential to the patrol method. Baden-Powell often talked about this standard (“totem”) as critical to the development of patrol pride. Personally, I would like to hear, “Come on Mighty Bears…” instead of “Come on Team A6…” I know that some Wood Badges get very distracted by the critters. Is just really difficult to rally a patrol around a letter or number. The point of the video was to emphasize the structure of patrol critters and how things can get out of control with them. I hope that NYLT does not completely drop patrol names. The patrol method needs a rallying point of some kind and the critter fulfills that nicely. YIS⚜
