    Thanks for tuning in everybody! Some of you will be pleased to know that I have a new tripod adapter which should allow me to film these trips from a position that allows me to keep the natural canal/engine sound audio without having terrible rattling sounds... so I don't have to either talk over the footage or play music over it! Stay tuned for the first test videos of the new setup soon!

    Hello it's me again! Thanks to everyone for tuning in. I am planning to be moored up at Bettisfield on the first Sunday of August and then be moored near Cole Mere in the morning of Monday 6th August this year. I may not be included in your videos when I'm on holiday, but it's a fantastic rural place to come back to if you wanted to walk past narrowboat Soulbury.
    Apart from that, you did another amazing video about real time boating! Well done Dan Brown!

    Great video as always Dan, thank you! It's exactly these manoeuvres that keep us wannabe narrowboaters awake at night, so it's really useful to see it happen in real time. It's also a bit reassuring that, even after all your years on board, the odd bump into a pontoon or canal side is ok!! Thanks!!

    Hi Dan,
    Narrowboats turn slightly forward of the middle of their length, regardless of how long they are. That means you can think about where the middle needs to go on corners, rather than the front. We've just had a trip on a 69 foot boat, and at times the front seemed miles away from where you would have instinctively put it on tight corners.
    With a very long boat, the front will swing a long way opposite to what you do with the stern, and you're getting a flavour of this on your new boat where it wasn't as noticeable on Tilly.
    So getting a boat into a lock for example where it's on a bend, you need to bring the middle of the boat in an arc to end up in line with the lock. That means the front is going to be much further towards the outside of the bend than you might imagine. On a tight bend, you can approach the lock very slowly with the front way off to the outside of the bend and then use a lot of rudder and a little power at the final approach to swing the boat about it's middle point to get it lined up spot on. With a little practice you can put the boat exactly where you need it until that pesky gust of wind or water from a culvert has other ideas! Bumps are inevitable!

    It’s amazing the historical importance of the canal buildings on the right at the start of the vlog. It’s also amazing the significance of the canal to Ellesmere yet it’s such a sleepy little town. It really is a special place. The blue Liverpool boat like yours that passes you on the services is usually moored up at Bettesfield. Don’t usually see that out.

    I often sit opposite the dry dock to have my dinner or breakfast when we are off or on our way back for a ride out. Ellesmere is a beautiful town and great to live in. Cracking video Dan well done on the mooring

    Pick a point in the middle of your boat roof, and steer like it's the front of the boat, it will keep the boat in the middle as you turn bends, hope that helps, along with, the more water over your prop, the quicker you turn, so practice going fast round corners rather than slowing down, you won't go forward much as your turning, but your boat will pivot beautifully.

    Fully enjoyed the real time footage. We know nothing about Narrowboats and are just now discovering the idea. Viewing your lovely film from Tampa. Will look into your books. Thanks very much; we enjoy this first encounter with you.

    Interesting to see Ellesmere, ive just spent a lot of money on a narrowboat, did some driver trg and it isnt as easy as people think to steer a narrowboat especially in windy conditions, watching you bungle your steering angles (after 6 years of experience) has made me anxious about my boat 😬 im worried that even if i make every effort to learn and try not to damage my or other peoples boats, there may be people on the canals who arent as considerate and who may damage my expensive boat 😳 this worries me about leaving the boat alone, even in a marina, and ive just found out that theft, especially from the roofs of boats is more prevalent than i thought it would be. And canal rage! Whats that about 😳 A vlog about the 'dark' side of life on the canals may be useful in preparing newbies for the water 😬

      As someone who has lived aboard for 20yrs I hope you are enjoying your canal journeys and not worrying about the ‘what ifs’. The ups are way more than the downs and life’s too short to worry - enjoy 🦆💕

    Show us how it really is. Great vid Dan. Life is not all lovely scenery, perfect weather, and smooth water. Life is mostly that, but tempered with boats coming the opposite direction, not quite mooring up to a side, knocking marina entrances, nudging jetties. Short of ramming another boat, in 18 minutes you managed the lot 😂. Seriously thou, well done again top vid.

    from that moment that boat crashed into tilly you could always see de damage left by that giant boat at the stern of tilly.
    but it gave Tilly karakter.
    great video Dan thanks.
    I would have loved to see your friends face when the boat refused to go in to the moring space :D hahahahahaha

    you did very well mooring up, a very interesting video.

  • @tim040
    @tim040 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Regarding, going with the flow takes precedence, it's a rule on rivers, as you have less control going with the flow, as against going into the flow, hence , going up river gives way to going down river. The Llangollen flows, so it would make sense to apply the same rule, even though it's a canal.,

    Well done, thanks for the video, I remember thinks like this; I used to have a sailboat moored in a Marina and had the same problems. Wind is the enemy. I was very impressed and I am sure you will get used to docking especially if you are going to be spending lots of time in the marina. After all, you will want to go canal cruising also. Remember practice makes perfect and if you can talk your friend into it, leave and dock each day for a while and return and soon you will be an expert. Or just moor on the banks of the canal and forget the marina. Can you tell me what kindle books are not covered by the last beginning to end book. cheers..

    I wonder why no one has come up with a way to flush out a cassette from the toilet. Just a smaller version of a pump-out tank. I'd imagine it'd save quite a bit of - ehum - arsing about!

    1) at 13:45 Was that olde TILLY moored on the left ??? 2) at the end when going into your mooring slot, you bumped right, then left into your neighbor. Was the neighbor aboard at the time and perhaps have a pot of soup knocked off the stove (hob)??? All in all I would get a 9.6 for maneuvering some extremely tight corners. Well done.

      Haha thanks for your generous score! Sadly it is not good old narrowboat Tilly! Weirdly it is an old Springer boat, possibly also 30 feet long! There are loads of people who see "that Tilly" from the bridge over the marina entrance and think it is "the Tilly!"

    I’m curious after watching all your videos as I’m an avid fisherman in the USA, are there fish in the canals? What kind if there are? And are you allowed to fish for them?

    • @SortOfInteresting
      @SortOfInteresting  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, yes there are plenty of fish in the canals, I'm afraid I really have no idea what they are though! In place like marinas which are basically just big ponds, you get a lot of fish, schools of dozens and dozens of them, with a few that can be proper big (or by my standards, maybe two feet long is the biggest I saw!) Out on the canals they are constantly disturbed by passing boats in the summer so you don't see so many big ones around.
      I don't think many people would eat fish from the canal though, as there tends to be a lot of diesel and and oil that gets into the canal water every so often!

      pike,perch,roach,bream,carp,tench,eels plus others, by law you need a rod licence to fish anywhere in england costing $39, costs more if you intend to fish for salmon an sea trout ie migratery fish,plus most waters rivers,lakes,canals fishing rights are leased of the landowner by fishing clubs,associations and you pay a annual fee to them to fish there.

      One fisherman we spoke to at the Black Country Museum told us he'd recently seen a Pike leap out of the water and take a Pigeon that was walking along the edge of the canal opposite. My friend caught a small Bream there, and ended up with a Pike with it firmly in its mouth. The water is really clear there so you could see it all happening.

      I don’t really have an issue with the service itself, I say if people want to use it then go for it. For me I don’t want to have something like that which makes me feel I “have to” make videos... I know I don’t really but it is just another level of pressure that I would put on myself! Every now and then somebody uses my paypal links and that is fine and great because (in my mind at least) it is more of a “pat on the back” rather than a I give you money, you deliver videos, sort of thing!
