I'm an Aussie , the dog you're referring to as an Australian shepherd is a working dog . It won't like being stuck in a truck for long periods at a time . They require a lot of exercise , due to the fact that they're a working dog . Choose another breed , keeping a working dog in a truck for extended periods of time isn't good for the dog .

Australian is the color, it’s an American breed and has nothing to do with the country.

Choosing a dog like that to ride with you, knowing it will get next to no exercise is just begging for problems. Destructive behaviors can easily happen because a bored dog wants to be a dog. 20 to 30 minutes a day isn't even close to adequate exercise for a dog like this. Yet when thebdpg behaves like a dog, the human more often than not gets mad, punishes, or abandons the pet under a myriad of excuses. Hell, I make sure my poodle gets out at almost every stop, and that includes around 3 hours a day of run/play time, an investment in additional equipment to allow for this, and I still don't manage to exhaust her energy. Only 20 to 30 minutes is... Well, I'll be nice and say it's extremely unfair to the dog.

@calvinspiff4348 I agree here but a heeler and aussie Shepherd are two very different breeds. The heeler is a kick a** breed who does great on trucks if exercised enough. Boy they are good protection too!

Dont walk them in truck stop parking lots, they absorb diesel and oil thru their feet, lick it off and get sick.
The poodles and doodles dont shed, that's a plus. Plus they are hypoallergenic. It's not easy having a dog in the truck, it's a lot of work, but worth it. Hopefully you have an apu to keep the truck cool when your outside in the summer.

We have two Great Danes at home and for the past few months I started bringing them, one at a time, and I love it! They aren’t puppies, so not very active. They’ve always been indoor dogs, so they do great as far as potty breaks. I did have to buy a pet loader ladder, so they could reach the cab. Cleaning is the toughest part, because I’m a neat freak. I got them used to the air gun so I can blow off loose hair, dirt, and water off them so it’s easier to clean. Conversation starters? Yup! I’m an owner op so didn’t have to deal with asking the company for permission.

Pets are wonderful. This is absolutely a very lonely lifestyle and not just a job. I love encountering other drivers who roll with pets. Especially exotics. I used to have all kinds of exotic animals. Poodles make great truck dogs! They don't shed! They do an excellent job of being security, and because of that they're a tax write off. Yeah you have to take them out, but just take them out before you start your shift, when you take your 30, and when you shut down. Don't give free access to food and water. You're setting them up to fail if you do (potty accidents, plus warer sloshing everywhere). Give them their needed food amounts broken up into two to three feedings per day. Also, by doing planned feedings will allow you to know sooner when something is wrong. One of the first symptoms is often them going off feed. Water intake is typically one ounce per pound of body weight. You get a system down that works for you. I disagree with your opinion on cats. I also have a cat, and if your litter box stinks, you aren't keeping it clean. How hard is it to scoop or sift when you're fueling, stopped for your breaks, or while getting loaded/unloaded? You can often take pets out at a customer too. Just don't be that asshole that doesn't pick up after them. If someone really can't manage the 60 seconds that it takes once a day to clean a litter box, then their time management needs serious work. As for doing a thorough cleaning of the litter box and changing the litter, that only needs to be done once a month. Anyone has time for that if they're not making excuses or just flat out lying. Also, many drivers out here are obese or even morbidly obese, and getting off their butts to walk and play with a dog would be a very good thing! Pets enrich our lives, and make ideal traveling companions for sure!

It’s cool and all but honestly the dirtiest trucks I’ve been in were the ones that had pets in them. I hated getting a truck that had a full time pet in it. The smell was awful. Many owners don’t want to keep the trucks cleaned properly and not smelling.

If you're not already married before you get into trucking it's just cruelty to yourself to start getting into trucking. You need to have a solid family and social life going into it or your going to get mentally burnt out from the loneliness if you are deciding on being a lifer. Also, loneliness can lead to psychosis and personality disorders so without adequate social time you start to lose perspective on things, and the loneliness itself can become a habit that's hard to break. Trucking company managers need to be sensitive to the signs of mental illness caused by excessive hours in the truck, and be willing to discuss reducing hours from 70 to 60 or 50 or less in order for their drivers to catch up on social time.

*Best potty stop idea* for Dog owners! 👋 🙂
+I'd say for your Dog's sake💗... dont just take them out (to go potty) at some boring truck stop pee station /dog run. ..... Because they wont have any good time in that! (If you think about it.. those areas for dogs ..are like a porto potty.)
But 😀if you Love your dog! and want them to have some kind of a good time when they get2 go out potty. And you'll enjoy it better too =]
Just pull off on the side of the road where you can fit your Truck yaknow, ........ Somewhere with some nice grass! Where both of you can have a nice little get out & walk around somewhere Green and kinda pretty looking. 🙂 That's what I always did with my ol Buddy, when I'd take him out with me all day. He loved it! I'd drive till I visually spotted a more pretty, nature looking area off the side of the road ~~~ and we stop to go potty There! 😊

War-Lord Trudeau, It is fairly unbelievable that the Canadian government could issue a threat of seizing Truckers pets and euthanizing them. They are mostly from an English culture, where people tend to treasure their animals, knowing they give help, comfort, humor, exercise. Even more so, these pets may be the equivalent of a lonely farmer’s dog, which keeps him company as he does the many chores and isolated tasks of long days. Many people value their pets/dogs as much as they do humans and euthanizing their children is behaving like Joseph Stalin or the Chinese leadership.

Was juggling ideas between a Pug or Maine Coon (the smallest dog vs. the largest cat). Looks like I'm going the Maine Coon route. They are basically dogs 🐕 as big as dogs too lmao. They don't vocalize much but may chirp time to time. Cats are cleaner than Dogs, that's why traditionally Cats 🐈 = indoors and Dogs 🐕 = outdoors. (I'LL TAKE A HARD PASS ON HAVING A DOG LIFT ITS LEG AND COVER MY TRUCK IN PISS) Anyways, for the catbox smell problem I'm going to run an auxiliary fan through duct hose to sleeper vent. Also going to get one of those expensive robot 🤖 self-cleaning-whatever catboxes. It's a lot of investing I'll have to do but I'm not stupid and I acknowledge the fact that a Maine Coon is going to generate huge amounts of doo doo 💩 HAHA! OH LORD... IM ALREADY REGRETTING GETTING A PET... PERIOD! but I must commit, I have to stick to my original plans.
