Love keeping MRE's in stock, but they're expensive so I only have one case. I store more Humanitarian Daily Rations. They're vegetarian, and not to everyone's taste, but much cheaper. Love the Lentil Stew. I keep multiple cases for emergencies and to hand out to others. Good video. Blessings, all.

Im a hunting/backpacking/fishing kinda guy.....that being said I keep 2 cases that are rotated out normally over 2 years along with a few mountainhouse meal buckets......my son-n-law splits the cost with me to keep them in stock and ready and we actually go thru them especially in the fall when we do weekend hunts......... they are easy to prepare and eat on the go.....we also make up our own MRE"s which come up alot cheaper ......gotta do what you gotta do !!!........there is something that fits in everyones budget !!!

Hey Grey, just a couple of suggestions regarding MRE's.
    1) Always have the following items to add flavour to the MRE's:
Tabasco Sauce - buy the real stuff, not a substitute
    French's yellow mustard
    Soy sauce
    Granulated sugar and brown sugar
    Ketchup
Bar b que sauce in packets
    Peanut butter and jam
    2) And last but not least, small cans (7 oz) of creamed corn (to pour over various entrees)
I learned all this while working for a state department office back in the '80's. We had the dubious pleasure of "taste testing the new form of rations". Oh dear Lord, if people think MRE's are bad now, the originals were absolutely horrible!!! Spices and condiments were the only option to make them "eatable".
Thanks so much for all you do!

As an Army Veteran, I will say that as with any other product, some of them are really good and some of them are really gross. Depends on brand and personal preference. They do eventually go stale depending on a variety of factors so they need to be kept in a cool/dark place. Do not leave them in a garage or attic. Rotate them out every so often, probably 2-3 years. They are very convenient in mobile and survival situations and the heavy plastic bags keep it completely contained and water/crud proof. They are very expensive but when you are in a bad situation, they are life savers that pay for themselves really fast.

I have bought some of my rations off eBay, in addition to other sites that only deal in rations and some survival gear. I have also traded with other ration reviewers and bought rations and individual components off other reviewers. what I also likke about rations is there are items that youu can hold on to for long term storage, like the utensils, napkins or wet wipes and tissues, or occasionally fuel tabs, water tablets and extra bags. I did a quick cursory comparison of cost per calorie - and MRE's are about $0.009/calorie, whereas say progresso chicken soup is $0.017/calorie, whereas say rice and beans if bought in bulk could be as low as $0.0009/calorie. A pound of beef (1150 calories) at $8.00 = $0.0069/calorie. Or if you added that same beef to a pound of rice and beans, it would average out to $0.0039/calorie.
So, for me if planning long term bulk storage, I'm going for bulk dry beans, rice, dry and freeze some meat, canned goods, dried picked fruit, nuts and vegies. But keep a few cases of MRE's for a bugout scenario. Haha. I guess I'm a little anal-ytical.

I'd rather buy a little bit of freeze dried foods and then buy mostly canned foods, can my own foods and stock up on dry goods like flour, sugar, salt, pasta, beans, etc. MRE's aren't the most budget friendly.
