My son brings us cases of them all the time we probably have a dozen or more at this point. He is still active duty in the Army for 2 more years. we have tried them and some are pretty good others are horrible but in an emergency who's to complain.
Very informative Grey, I've always wondered about them. We do a lot of our own canning but I can see how there is a place for these regarding preparedness. Even as a barter item for desperate people. Food is food if your hungry ya no 🤗
Hey Grey, just a couple of suggestions regarding MRE's. 1) Always have the following items to add flavour to the MRE's: Tabasco Sauce - buy the real stuff, not a substitute French's yellow mustard Soy sauce Granulated sugar and brown sugar Ketchup Bar b que sauce in packets Peanut butter and jam 2) And last but not least, small cans (7 oz) of creamed corn (to pour over various entrees) I learned all this while working for a state department office back in the '80's. We had the dubious pleasure of "taste testing the new form of rations". Oh dear Lord, if people think MRE's are bad now, the originals were absolutely horrible!!! Spices and condiments were the only option to make them "eatable". Thanks so much for all you do!
As an Army Veteran, I will say that as with any other product, some of them are really good and some of them are really gross. Depends on brand and personal preference. They do eventually go stale depending on a variety of factors so they need to be kept in a cool/dark place. Do not leave them in a garage or attic. Rotate them out every so often, probably 2-3 years. They are very convenient in mobile and survival situations and the heavy plastic bags keep it completely contained and water/crud proof. They are very expensive but when you are in a bad situation, they are life savers that pay for themselves really fast.
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on this topic. When I was in the Army, we all would trade off ones we disliked. Everyone has a different palette. I used to love the jalapeño cheese and crackers 🤣

I keep some MREs for travel kits since the high-calorie and ready-to-eat aspects are perfect for if you're on the move and can't stop to heat something up. However, they make up a very small portion of my preps.
Great uses, and I'm in the same boat about 2-3% of my overall food preps. I feel they have a spot in preparedness, hence why I keep several cases myself. Thanks for adding to the conversation, Michael.
I have about 10 cases of mre’s me & my team use them for practice patrols or when we go on hikes with protein or candy bars added in. We also participate in big airsoft events to practice communicating, moving & shooting while using these as our meals. Everyone should try 1 Mre so they know what they should expect. I also stock these for an emergency where if I need to help people I can give them 1 each & send them on there way or as a resupply to family or friends.
