Ok artisan home made hot dogs are just on another level. The sausages alone seem to be on another level. I don t like hot dog that much but when i am in the area i will try it. The passion of japanese artisans just makes me smile everytime.
Great video, as always! Thank you for posting the location. If I'm lucky enough to come to Japan in the next year, then this is definitely going to be a lunch target my first few days in country. It looks mouth watering good!!!

Thank you Nick for this great video. I really like the conversation between Iida-san and yourself. He seems to be a very great craftsman who takes a lot of pride in making the best food he can. Thats one of the things I really love about Japan. Myself, when I am in Japan every 2 years, I eat only japanese food, because there is so much wonderful japanese food (which I can mostly not get where I live in Switzerland), and I dont want to eat hot dogs, burgers, pasta, pizza or other things like that. But I totally appreciate that japanese people or gaijin persons like to enjoy "non japanese" food sometimes.
Oh so THAT'S what the sauce was! I would have never guessed it was teriyaki. It looked absolutely delicious! Also, the owner almost seems like a Japanese Keanu Reeves. Which is the highest of compliments! Just a really cool and chill guy.
Why have I not found your channel earlier. I visited Japan last year. I'm about to binge watch everything so I can plan out my next trip there. Thank you :)
I'm going to Japan this fall, so I'll definitely hit this place up. Not many places will make their own franks, so this certainly looks interesting. Though the one thing is that two of the iterations look like they're really difficult to eat without a fork and knife, but that's just a minor thing.
the best part for me is to see that he has sausages that look good enough to just eat as is. Most places use what I cal meat dough shaped like a sausage. They are okay but don't really stand out. this however I would almost fly a round trip for it.
JAPADOG is actually by a Japanese expat guy in Vancouver, BC CA -- the Santa Monica pier location u visited is the only outside of the Vancouver area... and I saw it copied somewhere in Tokyo in late 2019 but in the year I've spent in Tokyo recently I haven't seen it
This is another must-visit right here, thanks for the awesome tips.! Oh, as a person living in Malmö, going to Denmark and getting that original rød pølse is always a success.
Definitely going to show this to my friend in Japan so we can come when I visit her! I want to try them all, and I am not even an avocado fan (I just CANNOT do the texture... it messes with me so BAD) but I want to try!
I need to check this place out when I finally get to visit Japan again. Been a fan of good fancy hotdogs since my sommelier friend took me to a hotdog place ran by an ex executive chef of some super fancy restaurant here in Hawaii.
@@JunkFoodJapan it's amazing. They have stuff with lots of exotic meats like buffalo and gator meat, but my favorite is the hawaiian. It's a Portuguese sausage hotdog with a mango mustard and pineapple relish.
Those sausages look like German Grobe Bratwurst, which is a pork sausage made with some more coarse mince than the usual sausage. Very juicy. I can imagine that they are excellent in a hotdog.
I put this on my list of japan ideas to go here. I do love a good hot dog, but don't think I've ever had a "fresh" one. To give him some ideas, there is the West Virginia (WV) slaw dog. It's a chili dog with mustard and coleslaw. I bet he could make a killer coleslaw.
These Hotdogs look delicious! Really good! I have only one worry. As a German I really have a different taste about sausages. Most Japanese sausages are (kind of) sweet. Are these here different? The sausages are looking really nice! Thanks for the video. Greetings from Germany!
Looks great but could the bread be slightly wider so it's easier to put the toppings in so they don't fall out as easily? Maybe a local bakery could make them for him.
It is true that there aren't a lot of different types of sausage in Japan that he could use in his hotdogs. So, making his own was probably a great move.
@junkfoodjapan Was lucky enough to eat here on Sunday and it was the best hotdog I’ve ever had. Make the trip. Who would thought Japan would create the best hot dogs in the world? Oh yeah everyone who’s been to Japan as regardless of your favourite food, Japan will elevate it to a whole new level. The sausage home made is the perfect consistency, the meat is an ideal flavour for the hot dog combo. Combine that with a buttery roll perfectly sized. Then the flavours, the classic with the diced onion, the rich sweet teriyaki or the avocado covered house special. All of these flavours are balanced to perfection by someone who cares massively about the dish you will eat, and it shows, if all cooks provided this level of service we would live in a dream world. Add in some fries and a beer, one of the most memorable dishes in Japan. Was great to see locals enjoying this food as well, we were the only westerners. Would recommend walking from Shibuya so you can enjoy a walk back to the subway. Wow. Thanks for highlighting this treat.
I might have to make one myself on LIVE Stream... Otherwise I'm not sure anyone will get them right...October comes and I plan to stream once in a while
Im fairly certain his shop name was more of Wasei-eigo (decorative english) than actual english with a meaning Honestly, his craft and skill speaks volumes
My brother-in-law is visiting Tokyo in August with his girlfriend. I've sent him this video (and a few others of yours) so they can get some quality junk food while they're visiting. Nothing like living vicariously through others. 😂
I call that a sausage on a bun not a hotdog. Which is normally served with a hotdog/wiener the meat has a different meat consistency grind from a sausage. But I’m sure they are taste great.
I completely agree on the japadog comment, here in nyc I had to wait in line for almost an hour and the dogs were overpriced for what you get and a big let down!
Does this guy make a Curry Hotdog? Cause as a German, I want to eat that currywurst and see if they make a better Japanese take on that than the massive disappointment I've had with our other national snack, Döner Kebap, in Asakusa (Which has the sad distinction of being, in like 100 combined days of holidays in Japan, the only meal I _hated_ ). How does their pickle game compare to Denmark? Because Danish pickle slices (Agurksalat?) are the bomb, but with the Japanese's pickling traditions I'd expect them to be pretty strong contenders.
Really great video, the hotdogs looked amazing and the owner was a great sport for coming on the show. I would say that it was a bit harsh to fast forward him telling everyone about why he was interested and excited about his business. I get it was for comedic effect but it seemed a little unfair.
So are they hotdogs or sausages?? They look like sausages to me. What’s the texture like? If it’s gritty and chewy, it’s a sausage. If it’s soft and fluffy inside, it’s a hotdog. I wish you would’ve described the texture…
When he said it was originally an Indian word, I'm guessing he meant Native American. Because I'm Indian and I've literally never heard of that word before lol. Funny that some people still call native americans as indians even after finding the real India.
Sorry for your confusion. But people in Japan tend to use the terms "Indian(インディアン)" and "Indo-jin(インド人)" separately to mean each as Native American and Indian people. Nowadays, it's supposed to be inappropriate to use "Indian" to refer to Native Americans, though not many Japanese have contact with Native Americans or Indians, so the old custom doesn't change swiftly.
Those are not hot dogs but look like brats. Hot dogs are not sausages they are two different things! I've been to Japan, not my favorite place, probably seafood made to look like hot dogs.
