I've heard that traditional shotengai shopping streets are dying off in Japan due to the influx of big box discount retailers. I'd love to see a regular series highlighting the unique charm of Mom n' Pop shotengai shops in different neighborhoods!
I have a friend who has a great craft beer place right there. Tokyo Ale works totally worth dropping in for some of the whiskey wings they offer apart from the beers
I'm finally back home and totally missed this area. I missed a lot of areas since we didn't have that much time. You're giving me ideas for next time though!
I've been to Japan 7 times and, I'm disappointed to say, I've never tried oden. This video just made me want to hop on an aeroplane to Tokyo and make the first item on my itinerary be eat some!! 😂
This really feels like a classic Junk Food Japan episode. Going store to store trying all kinds of street food. And a wild Minoru Suzuki appears at 12:33 !!!!
I live down the street from that area and I've tried New York Bagel, Abechan and Kinokuniya. There are also a couple of great/cheap yaoyas that are away from the main Azabujuban area that I go to. I'll have to try the Curry Pan place.
There's countless number of local 'shotengai' shopping street like this found right in front of residential area train station not far from central Tokyo. Togoshi Ginza, Yanaka Ginza, Sugamo Jizo-dori, Kichijoji SUNROAD....
Junk food Japan is back to its best. I haven’t given an episode rating for a while. Today’s junk food rating is 10/10. I gotta hit that bagel spot. I miss New York 😅
Definitely visiting Azabujuban when me and my family go to Japan this June, I wonder if you can list the places you visited? Even in Japanese is fine. Cheers.
Are there any parks in the area where you can sit down to eat? Seems a lot of these places are takeout only and I don't want the food to cool on the way back to the hotel. Would love to see more shotengai vids. The big ticket shopping centers are great, but nothing beats finding hidden gems when travelling.
Hmmm 🤔 not really but you could sit down inside the Shotengai or cross the street from where the Tully’s coffee shop is. There’s a fountain and a small park
Seeing the Bagel, how about making an episode about foreign food in Japan. There are many places where chefs went our in the world to bring back another cuisine, then took the best of japanese mentality and smashed all together to create something completely unique.
I’d love to see a different style of video from you. You’re doing that algorithm friendly react to trendy food thing and an awful lot of people already occupy that space. ( you do it really well and you’re fantastic on camera by the way ) I feel like you’re overlooking your super power though! You’ve basically spend your whole adult life in Japan, you’ve gained a whole of experience and stories from that. I’m sure you’re also a pillar of the community over there running a gym and you have a lot of Japanese friends. I feel like you should be doing long form conversational type stuff with guests over food or drinks. Especially with home cooking, I can’t think of any western TH-camr that’s hanging out with locals in their homes eating home cooked meals. It would be a great niche and would make for really good videos.
@@JunkFoodJapan just discovered the other channel last night. You would be so good at that kind of podcast content but over food. Something Anthony Bourdain-esque. By the way, I’m heading back out to Japan in October and coincidentally a friend of mine is also going for the first time to train. Think he’s getting his black belt (something about Shodan and teaching up to 4th kyu?) Anyway he knows very little about Japan so I’ve been filling him in, it occurred me to when I typed that last night that he might have heard of you so I asked. “Oh yeah, kick city. Guy could cut down a tree with his low kick” He was saying one of his training mates studied you and styled his low kick from yours. He had no idea you had a food channel so I’ve sent him over for research.
@@JunkFoodJapan that would be really cool! He would love that. I’ll shoot you a DM closer to the date. Think we are meeting up towards the end of his training around the 19th of October, thanks!
@@JunkFoodJapan I'm not surprised. Most Japanese people I talked to either have never been, or went there once. The drinking street there is also supposed to be really good too.
LoL 😂 I can’t eat a whole lot of food anymore. I did Steak challenge with Champs kitchen and Wanko with Ryotaro check out the videos on the channel TOMODACHI
If you ever do a deep dive for bread, try to find a store that has German style bread. When it comes to Yakitori I don't like all variants. Cartelage probably the least and also not a fan of heart.
It's crazy how affordable it is to get some food in Japan. Even though they are expensive on other things like renting, you can get a really good meal almost anywhere.
It was a new camera and we had issues with it, not to worry. More better content will be forthcoming. Feel free to hang around for more food stories TOMODACHI
We are doing our best but that new camera has been giving us some serious trouble! Don’t worry we have fixed it and better quality content will be coming soon TOMODACHI
This was one of the first video my wife and I made as a team. And yes the auto focus was not set it was really a great learning curve. So thank you for actually watching it
Bruh........................................ Azabu is central yes, it's easy to find yes, but it's still very quiet relatively speaking. Pushing this video like Azabu is full of tiktok grabs is kinda dirty, no?? It's just not... and the spots u & I know shouldn't be :|
I didn’t know I was trying to push it as TikTok bait ? It was a walk about basically and we just had fun experimenting with the new Camera and working as a team. Hope you can enjoy our content in the future as well?
Who's doing your camera work Samurai ? Its really really dark & wobbly and you're not even in focus ☹️ Even a $5 Temu plastic cage frame would help make it more steady ! It's painfully obvious the camera person has absolutely no idea what they're doing ☹️ There's got to be someone from the Trash Taste tech squad who can help train you with camera work ? At least the audio is ok and the editing is always spot on, but OMG This was painful to watch, you deserve better than this to help your channel succeed Nic ☹️ If it's Angela doing the camera work, I apologize for my harsh words. I'm a retired TV cameraman and watching TH-cam is sometimes VERY frustrating. I'm only trying to help raise the channel up as these videos are permanent and the poor camera skills reflect badly on Nic.
It’s ok. I don’t mind the hard truth. It was the first time for us to film with that camera and it was a learning experience for sure. The content was good enough to make a video so I did what I could with the footage. Some scenes had to be retaken the next day. But I feel it came together well. What a great video!! Loved seeing all the little shops and local treats. From all the "Mmm's" I can tell you enjoyed yourself! 🥰
Yep! You had me at Mmm’s welcome to the channel TOMODACHI
Thank you for all your vids! I am so excited try the stuff you tried, especially the street food in this video!
I wish street food like this existed in North America. Most "street food" here is very sweet and not really cheap.
Great video, I want to explore this area on my next trip! Video suggestion is the alleyway under the train tracks at Yurakucho.

Ooooh you called it ! Inthoughtbitbwas a bit cheeky to put that in there but nice call TOMODACHI
Great video! I've always wondered if they have many vegetarian options in Japan? Sending much happiness from Minnesota.
It’s not a big thing here but there are places around for sure.

They might have closed down…
Just 9 minutes in and I have seen so many things I'd love to try. Also, I learned the Japanese word for 'raccoon'. I love this channel! ❤
Thank you ShellyS2060 it’s motivating to read comments like this.
Tanuki is a raccoon dog, unique to Japan and China. Araiguma is raccoon and it's an invasive species in Japan.
Really enjoyed this one, thank you Nick :)

Ooooh I’m not so good with spicy 🌶️ …

Video suggestion. What about a walking tour through Magome/Tsumago and stopping at various food outlets along the walk?
I’ll put it on the list for sure 👍
The food is at the beginning and end mostly, however there is a nice spot right in the middle for a break
Great vid AZABU YA!!!! 👍🏻
Great video. How long did you film for as thats alot of food lol. Forgot to mention bagel shop no cash 😮
