I raked two lawns in November of '64 for enough money to go to the record store and get The Beach Boys - Surfing USA/Fun, Fun, Fun and The Race Is On by The Possum. Still have those 45RPM's.. RIP

What you're really saying is you don't like the pop music Nashville is currently ripping off. But those people have always made records that sound as much like the most popular genres of the day as possible. In the 50's the arrangements and production were copied from Perry Como, etc. (And folks complained about the sting sections, the drums, and even the Jordanaires.) My third favorite song, "Easy Lovin' (1970) has a 100% Motown arrangement. If you can't abide today's pop in your Country there are plenty of "traditionalists" to listen to without resorting to Willie's Roadhouse.
Just imagine what could’ve been if he’d never gotten ahold of cocaine his voice is destroyed and it makes me sad because his songs make me cry it hurts me to see how destroyed he was. I wish someone could’ve talked some sense into him before he got to this point

He would be slammed all of the time for sticking to his guns and saying "stop calling the music country when it isn't country". But the haters never took the time to really listen to what he was saying... he never said don't make the music, he never told anyone not to like the music- he said that there is room for everything, just call it something else. They hi-jacked the already well established name to peddle their music, rather than calling it something original. He didn't want to see the music that he loved more than anything die.
First off, Pig on the piano. It doesn't get any better... I was lucky enough to see George Jones twice. Once as a young boy at the old Cleveland Arena, then again as a teenager at a place called Ponderosa Park. Back in those days you would see half a dozen Big Name acts on the same bill. Tammy Wynett was at both shows, as was Hank Jr. The arena show also included Johnny Cash, Conway and Loretta. Great memories. Thanks Joe!!

Born in 57, believe it or not, I didn't know who George Jones was until much later in life. The Beatles had my attention from age 6, when I started singing their songs. When they broke up in 1970, then it was Badfinger and Crosby/Stills/Nash. Being a rebel hippie type I rejected Country music because it was "my parents music". (Big Mistake). Then in 1986, our friend Ricky Van Shelton became a huge Country Star. I got a gig as Lead Singer/Rhythm Guitarist in a local Country Band. I didn't get country music until I heard George Jones sing, "He Stopped Loving Her Today", and that's when I was blown away. I got good after that. Country music transformed my writing and singing and playing. George Jones was a big part of that. Thanks for the post, Joe.... Glen

George Jones was and always be the best in Country music. He's been my favorite since I was 12 and I'll soon be 25 in a matter of months. Lots of good memories surround his music.
I did a few times. One time on the front row. I was literally 6-8 ft from him the whole show. He saw tears in my eyes as he sang (he so awesome at this show and I’d drank a little lol) and he’d look down and smile ever so often. I got to meet him and shake his hand. He give me an autographed picture of himself. I saw one of the last shows he and Tammy did together too. George is and always will be my favorite singer period.
A great George Jones memory. In the late 70’s with a crew framing my brother’s cabin. We had a boom box playing a cassette of his album “I Am What I Am”. Our favorite song was “His Loving Her Is Gettin’ In My Way”. When it came, we’d all sing together “don’t wanna have to jerk his beard out, but I may.....” Great album.

I’ve gotta agree . At least the greatest male country western singer . I haven’t been to a huge number of concerts because I’ve never been good in crowds . I got over it when he came to town and was fortunate that he showed up . Grin . Thank you for this .
Hi Coby….. Sure I’d be interested what you are showing if for no other reason that I enjoy history. As for what we exhibit in our museum our focus is on great musicians( pickers) and not singers or the front man unless the singer was first and foremost a great musician for example Glen Campbell or Jimi Hendrix. My advice…. Don’t do it to make money. Most museums don’t. If you want to do it still…. Make sure you have more money than you ever think you’ll need because you will need it. Most businesses fail due to not having sufficient funding at the start. I know from years of retail before founding this museum. Plan on things you never believe will happen because they might. I never dreamed the city would take my original museum building shortly after opening by Eminent domain paying only half its replacement cost or while my museum artifacts were in storage due to losing my building they would be flooded during a 100 year flood or the economy would collapse at the same time they were going to take my building. It was great seeing them together again on stage which in itself was rare if ever since they were studio players together… not road or live players. On top of the Nashville A-Team we inducted the Motown Funk Brothers, Elvis’s Blue Moon Boys, Johnny Cash’s Tennessee Two, The Wrecking Crew from L.A and the Memphis Boys from American Sound Studio in Memphis. ……..same stage, same night!! I saw Mr.Jones at Red Lobster in Franklin, seated facing the room. A steady stream of fans went up to him and he never lost his smile. Classy.
