Look when dealing with the law in Ireland just give your name address and tell them to hurry up and search you. It takes 2 minutes and they will be more pissed off your giving them instructions. Once you've done this you can just walk off. I've been in cuffs over refusing searches and shit it's a waste of time. Let them get on with it. They live for these moments.

Also, police in NI do have different protocols/procedures to police in England, Scotland and Wales under the agreement and the executive. There're within their rights to search the guy. There're also allowed to stop any random car and do a drug/drink test even if there are no suspicions of law breaking.
