    I have had Ooma since 2011 and I can't say enough good about it. Easy set up and great features. I subscribed to the premier about one year in just to support their business model. I just upgraded to the new Telo air this week and am adding the security features. The Ooma dashborad on the internet is really a great tool. It's really handy to not have to have a phone jack where you need a handset, because the handsets are wireless. You only need a 110 outlet for charging.

    I was spending about $60 a month for phone..$30 was taxes and additional cost. (??) Anyway, I have had my OOMA now for about 6 years. AWESOME. Pay $3.45 a month (State Taxes only). Its a great way to keep a home phone. I love it.

    got ooma last summer. i needed a landline i could count on for health reasons (and since i get sh*tty cell coverage here, was lucky to receive or send call/text on them so they werent an option), but health is no longer the case. meantime i was paying over $30/mo for stripped down basic very limited landline to make maybe 6 calls/mo.
    had a brainfart, did a bit of research, watched a vid or two here, ponied up only $79 on amazon for this same basic system w no wireless. first day or so it took a bit to get used to and for the system to settle in. but since then its been one of the best decisions i ever made. i have only 12mbps internet, but i watch live streaming tv online, play online mmo's AND receive calls all at the same time with absolutely no problem. once in a great while you may find a sort of fuzzy sounding caller, but in 6mos its been maybe 2x, and you have to consider it may be their cellphone too, not you. the system is optimised, or tweaked, to do you right; if you look into it they have cellphone service, business service & other things too. premier is awesome if you need it, but i dont.
    in other words, this isnt that magic jack bullsh*t, these people did it right with the basic and do US right by making it even better with the other added very cheap services. and basic is just as Kent said, my bill every month is a little over $4/tx/mo, thats it. no service charge, no mysterious charges, nothing. still not sure?
    think of it this way; if you get a cable tv/internet/phone package from say att, thats all through internet, streamed to your home. that phone is VOIP, same as this ooma. there is absolutely no difference between ooma and att VOIP. ah, one difference; the price. ones free.

    Before you plug Ooma into your phone jack, you definitely should disconnect the wires coming into your house from your land line service. There is voltage on the wires while you have service, and possibly after you cancel the service. The voltage on the wires are is low so there no danger of you getting shocked or starting a fire but you don't want the land lines circuits outside your home connected to Ooma. Tape each wire end as you remove them to prevent them from touching and shorting out.

    Risk of fire? LOL.. Maybe if lightning happens to hit the lines and make it back to your equipment. Basically your just isolating it from the old Telco analog lines at the Demarc to avoid interference or foreign voltages coming back to your unit.

      I just checked the Ooma website, and they say your existing landline phone can be used with Ooma. Their handset might have some features that your existing phone might not have, though. So compare what your existing phone can do vs. what an Ooma handset can do, and decide if you want to spend extra on one of their handsets -- which are NOT required to use Ooma.

    You mentioned your internet service was somewhat slower. I have a rural internet service varying between 2 - 4 gig which is enough for streaming and surfing. Any idea is this band width will allow for Ooma without impacting other internet users in the house?

  • @wkrbtg9
    @wkrbtg9 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Kent, thanks for the reveiw, I noticed the cable you show for the ethernet connection between the OOMA box and the cable modem is the wrong type. You show a flat 8 conductor telco cable. You need to use an ethernet Cat5e or better cable for ethernet connections. That is probably why your performance was terrible when you connected the OOMA in another room.

  • @michaeldecicco8345

    Hey Kent, great video. Question...
    Currently I have Comcast Triple Play and I am considering buying the Ooma to potentially downgrade to just internet and TV. Currently my house is wired so that there are 3 different phone lines throughout the house ready to be used.
    If I understood your video correctly, all I would have to do is plug one of the wall lines into the Ooma, and disconnect the phone line from the actual Comcast box outside? And by doing that, each outlet throughout the house will work through Ooma? Because if that is the case that'd be perfect.
    Just let me know what you think!

    • @kentrlau
      @kentrlau  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael DeCicco you are exactly right! the system provides the dial tone for your entire house !

    • @michaeldecicco8345
      @michaeldecicco8345 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kent Lau That's great news. Thanks for the quick response. Last question for ya... Haha. Is it easy to disconnect the phone line from the actual Comcast connection? It seems simple but now looking on line it seems a tad complicated.

    • @kentrlau
      @kentrlau  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael DeCicco it should be pretty straight forward. with trial and error, you can try disconnecting the line and check to see if the dial tone is gone in all your phones. If it is, then you're good to go. I'd try to do a few searches online to see if there's some threads that walk you through it. If all else fails, you can always call your company to disconnect it.

      @kentrlau  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yes

    • @mikecrabtree8200
      @mikecrabtree8200 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, regular corded or cordless. If you are going to use a Telo, the easiest way is to have your local phone company to come out and disconnect your home from the local hook up.
      Once that is done, you can plug your phone cord in to the ooma and then in to a wall jack for your phone, this will feed your ooma signal to every phone jack in your house without interference from the local phone companies system. You then plug any phone in to any of the available phone jacks in your house and there you have it.
      My home is set up like this. ATT disconnected our condo from the main pots line over 8 years ago, our ooma is connected to our house phone jacks as described, and everything works like it should.
      Unless you see the ooma or are told it is not a normal phone line, you would never know.

      Mike Crabtree this message was EXTREMELY helpful in understanding what’s involved. My parents would benefit from Ooma but I need to know all the kinks in what’s involved before I recommend it because I do not live close to them. This video and specifically this comment cleared up a lot for me ! (I wonder how much most places charge to come out and disconnect. I imagine not much but if it’s like 99$ then on top Of the 129$ cost of an ooma) could be a problem . Thank you much !

    I got 2 telemarketing calls as soon as I plugged this thing up. I've had it 2 months now, and today was the worst. I got 6 telemarketing calls and 4 of them left voicemail. I've never even given this number out to anyone. I never got one telemarketing call with Magic Jack. Also, Ooma is only posting positive reviews from reviewers on their website. None of my reviews get published there. Now I've bought a cell phone and I use Ooma as my throw-away phone number. I've turned off the voicemail. So if you're looking for a cheap throw-away number, Ooma is definitely for you.
