    What are your questions about taking “smart” notes?

    • @reshmarao3048

      I have a really big syllabus to cover...and making notes from class notes and combining them with reference books I read and consolidating them on to a single book....creates another book....dis is exact situation am facing right now....so my question is...how to minimize the note making period...bcoz I juz have 4 months left...and I have more material now and still can't figure wat should I prepare from before exams

      What might you do to take notes when your hands are busy? This seems a little silly but I'm a mom of 3 little and I listen to a lot of things while I'm doing the more mundane tasks. Maybe I should try and form a habit of carrying a notebook everywhere.

      I'm struggling with the categorization part. I'm sold on this type of notetaking. My brain wants to make categories not ideas! I have a lot of notes and I'm probably just going to start analog and see what emerges!

    This is a very old technique we used in college before the internet was created. I remember taking notes on 3x5 index cards when working on research projects while spending hours perusing the research material at the university's library. I love how this is now being applied to modern journaling/prep work.

    • @quadrivium333
      @quadrivium333 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The crux of this process isn’t just taking notes on 3x5 cards. The point is to transform what you read/listen to into your own words, ask questions, find contradictory information to currently held assumptions and then engage in a contextual dialogue with the other notes in the box. It’s not taking notes by topic nor is it filing notes by topic.

    I learned this style of note taking from a high school teacher. He taught us to write notes this way for us to write our 10 page biology paper. It does help to be able to move your thoughts/notes around before typing out the paper so it has better flow. Thanks for the reminder!

    I've done a ton of research on the best Zettelkasten content on TH-cam and honestly this is the best one I've seen. A lot of people really conflate creating a personal wiki or database with the real "content-creation" power that a slip box has. Realistically a slip box is the building blocks for the stuff (content) you'd add to a personalized database
    Ahrens mentions it being a conversation partner and you did a perfect job outlining that and the power it has. Great work!

    • @MattRagland

      Thanks Bailey! Really appreciate the kind words!

  • @tasteslikepurple122
    @tasteslikepurple122 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    To respond to your question of how to organize your cards, have you tried using the system that Ahrens describes in his book? The dynamic numbering system in which cards are filed according to relevance is a lot easier than it sounds, and has yielded some interesting trains of thought for me. Categorizing cards in a top down manner (I.e. work, life, etc) goes against the original idea of having trains of thought arise from the bottom up. The numbering system helps for this.

    I got sidetracked by the book on the table “Greenlights” by Matthew McConaughey
    Had to pause the video and go check it out.
    After listening to 2 minutes of the preview..... it was immediately purchased as an audiobook...... I’m now an hour into it.
    Time to finish watching this video..... great job and great book recommendation 😉

    Cool! I love your very true-to-yourself style productivity tips and congratulations for becoming a full-time creator! For an academic researcher like me, extensive time is spent on taking notes from reading. Organizing a large amount of topic-related notes, accumulated over a long period of time, is a huge work. I've tried Roam and Obsidian. They similarly provide a flexible enough structure and interconnectivity required for this task, but still substantial effort is needed if you want to develop and keep your system. I am still struggling with that. Hopefully one day your video can help with that :)

    I have started to take notes in the Linux command line. This opens up so many possibilites to creating a "second brain". How can we utilize Linux bash scripts, or even Python or another programming language to supercharge the normal topical tag lookup? Are there any programmers or anyone that has any thoughts on this?
