Decades ago in Car & Driver (I think) there was an article about the production of this chase. The Mustang's front steering and suspension had to be rebuilt twice due mostly to the jumping. The torsion bar suspension of the Charger didn't require repairs.

I always wondered why the seemed to have sped up the footage of McQueen reversing the Mustang after missing one of the first turns. It spoiled the shot a bit, in my opinion.

Love the Charger, it such a powerful yet beautiful car.
I love this car chase. It was this movie that created my love for the Dodge Charger '68. Never got around to puchasing one. But I did get myself a Challenger because of Vanishing Point. :) The rest of Bullitt wasn't _bad,_ though not especially memorable.
I was there when it was at auction.... hasn't been seen in public since.
All Mustang sound according to Jay Leno were GT40 dubbed over to make it louder
i read they used the cars in the picture but recorded on the track
THE REASONING OF WHY THE MUSTANG wasn't seen AFTER the wreck of the CHARGER was McQueen spun out and was into a ditch

Bill Hickman did *NOT* work on Vanishing Point. Stunt Driver for that movie was Carey Loftin.
He was involved.
@@MFPMapFilmProductions I find that statement highly dubious. Bill Hickman doesn't show up in any of the known documentation.
@@That_AMC_Guy But it does happen. I am literally making documentary and have spoken to an old school Aussie stunt man who told me two famous Aussie stuntmen were on his film, but not credited. VP is a massive car chase movie, it would be foolish to think only Carey Loftin is all that was there. Not everyone gets credited.
@@MFPMapFilmProductions Like I said dude, in 50+ years since the film came out - this is the FIRST time I've ever heard anybody claim Hickman participated in Vanishing Point. Bill Hickman was already well-established by 1970/71.... so for him to go un-credited doesn't make any sense.
@@That_AMC_Guy And yet 42 years later, people are still not sure if it was Joe Donte, who is credited with directing Poltergeist who did it or if it was Steven Spielberg.
