Keep in mind in the novels, almost everybody on base has the same rank so they can't legally defend themselves because they're all there as criminals, including James who's actually elected into a position of power because he had brains and people listened to him according to the central computer's psychological profile of him. There are really strict rules about not fraternise with staff who are paid to be there who are treated as a different caste (iirc, it was something like 100 lashes and essentially being sent to the front lines which is suicide if you can't move your arms properly?) so only the lower class fraternise among themselves. The base is all male, but one of the pilots of... I think its Mynx (seen in episode 3 tailing Banshee, her driver is newhalf and you see them a few times, including at the very end of the show during the briefing sequence. The canyon chase in episode 2 is inspired by a similar scene in the 1977 book Firefox, which Kambayashi cites as one of his inspirations behind Yukikaze.
I wonder what language of Ace Combat Games prefer to Players? English or Japanese? Ever since Ace Combat Zero is American-like Live Action Cutscenes instead of Anime or CGI since AC5.
