77th Anniversary - Battle of Tarawa & Makin (Butaritari), KIRIBATI

To commemorate the 77th anniversary of one of the bloodiest battles in the Pacific Theatre of WWII, the Tourism Authority of Kiribati (TAK) is releasing a series of videos and personal interviews and accounts of I-Kiribati survivors of the 1943 battles of Tarawa and Makin (Butaritari).
This is 91 year old Tiemwane's story of her experiences during and immediately after WWll in Betio, Tarawa.

When she talks about the shortage of food after the war, and how people with malnutrition couldn't overcome measles, it was really, really sad. I could see it in her eyes and face. So sorry she and other I-Kiribati had to experience that because of WWII's devastation of the landscape.
