Wholesome video. During university in Germany I was a mobile mechanic for some extra money, but I just did it for scooters and small cc bikes. I definitely felt it when you mentioned they need the vehicle for work and aren’t made of money. A lot of my customers were migrants from Africa, working delivery jobs. They often share one scooter between multiple people, the scooter is driving 24/7 so they earn enough to scrape by. I just felt so bad charging them. I heard a quote about America that most people wouldn’t have access to $1000 if they had an emergency. It must be devastating when the vehicle they depend on breaks down.
Its more for tight tolerance calipers if that makes sense. Lots of euros get brake squeak over time as the brake dust and stuff builds up and the metals start rubbing
You seem like a good mobile mechanic. I do the same. Keep on calling out the lousy and scammer mechanics. Always laugh when you say, I need to get out of here! On some jobs you just need to bite the bullet. Very little compensation, but that is how you build up a customer base. Cheers from Canada.
I was told many many years ago that copper grease on the rear of the pads is to stop them squeaking. It probably did maek a difference on the first iterations of disc breaks but it probably does nothing now except for attract dirt and grime.
Hey Matt! Get a collapsible service cart. Will save 5 minutes per job. Won't take up much space in the bed. No more multiple trips walking tools around car or from truck ... it was one of my best buys
I work at a school bus company near toronto canada. We run our buses like this. We call it a " wear indicator ". When the brakes go metal to metal , then wear throug the pad and half way through the rotor , the caliper piston pops out and the pedal goes to the floor. That notifies the driver that they need brakes LOL. True story. Happens at least once a week !!
Subscribed! I've been watching a few of your videos and you are so down-to-earth and humble. You make a world of difference for these people. Yes, you make a profit, but I think you are reasonable. This is sort of heroic for those people in need. Blessings to you!
When I was a teenager delivering pizza for pizza hut, I did this exact same thing. By the time I told my mom, I had been using the e-brake to stop. Knowing what I know now, God...can't believe I ever let it get that bad. lol I still remember hearing the brake pad falling into the road and wondering what the noise was lol
When i was working at bmw we had to use brake pad paste to “minimize brake squeal” which was actually legit. Sometimes the way the pad sat in on the fixed calipers especially it would squeak over time from metal to metal touching on the caliper (not the pad touching). There were a few specific spots you want to apply it
Yo brother grease on the back of the pads can help reduce pad squeak. As you apply the brakes the pads vibrate at a high frequency causing the pads to rub parts of caliper that squeeze pad. This is usually not necessary on high quality pads with good shims on the back as the shims serve the same purpose but i always put a little on there just to help prevent comebacks. Keep up the good work man love yiur channel.
i love your genuine sense of character. this makes me interested to watch your videos. can you please put more time into editng and affects because i want to enjoy your viedos to the fullest.
Holy brake pad, that's crazy talk. That had to be grinding bad bad. You will be blessed my dude . I just blew intake or head gasket, or both lol wish you were in Ohio.
i’d recommend like Autozone brake pads for something like this, lifetime warranty brake calipers and brake pads. They’ll never have to pay for them again.
Wow! They drive 'em till the brake pads literally go away! There is no excuse for this. A $30 set of brake pads... If they can afford to drive, they can afford $30. Now they have to pay a lot more. Anyone can do a brake job. It's easy to learn, and can be done with a minimum of tools. I'm willing to bet that they have smart phones and cable TV...they'd rather pay those bills than maintain their vehicle in bare minimum safe condition- and as a result, they now have to spend a lot more. (And before anyone says it: I grew up very poor, among the poor, and I saw the same scenario repeated over and over again- this is WHY the poor are poor; because they're irresponsible and their priorities are messed up. And then they breed...). Hope you get paid, Matt. My asshat of a sister had a wonderful mobile mechanic who would always help her out (I wouldn't TOUCH her car!). When she moved, she left owing him $200, which she never paid.
I remember about 10 years ago I had a pair of brakes that I bought where the instructions said the grease the back of the pad and ever since then I have been doing it but I have noticed that no other pair of brakes I have bought said to do it. I just do it just in case now tho anyway just to make sure it doesn’t start squeaking. Ofc I grease the sliding pins and the ears of the brakes as well.
had a difficult brake job on a car, and my grandfather decided not to buy brake lubricant (1.99 at Autozoone). As unlike every other time by using that, we ended up doing a 30 minute job in the span of 5+ hours because we could not get the brake pads into the groove of the bracket. It may accumulate dirt, but in some cases it does help with putting the pads on and allowing them to travel easier. In my experience anyway.
You’re great man, awesome. I have a good amount of knowledge tinkering with vehicles. I wish I knew a way to reach out to people who could use the help but I’m also in a pickle at times with money so I wish I could do the work for free but I’d be very generous.
Cool deal your really a good guy. Love your videos. I have 3 Subarus so I'm a maintenance guy myself but I don't like to do the maintenance on my cars so I have a guy that does them for me I wish you were closer I'd have you do the work for me as well you really know what you're talking about. I'm in Florida 😅.
Silicone Paste is good to use and lasts longer than anti-seize , I use on class 8 brake drum shoe rollers . Matthew I purchase most of my consumable and lubricant products on line , JB Tools .
No grease on the back of the pad and no grease on the hardware only under. Thats a correct brake job. Always regrease the slide pins after cleaning them and too much grease is possible on the slide pins it will cause a hydraulic like reaction to them as they heat up causing the brakes to stick. Ive done more brake jobs than you can shake a fist at and have only had squeak comebacks because of cheap ass pads that were customer supplied aka oriellys el cheapos.
Is it possible to just order a caliper kit instead of replacing the caliper? I can imagine it would take more time to rebuild the caliper which falls under labor…
This is what happens when people are cheap and ignore the grinding! Trust me I know I have a neighbor that has a caravan they drive it into the dirt one time My brakes are making a funny noise they've been for the last year Yeah brake pads left the chat in the back completely toasted the caliper so pretty much a $20 brake pad job turned into a $400 brake job! But no their kid had to have a $400 Xbox game console Oh I had to have that! And this is constructive criticism I'm not being mean it's cuz I care about you where is your jack stands My Jack gave out on me a couple months ago Good thing I wasn't underneath the vehicle! Make sure you're using Jack stands put some plywood down and put most of the weight on the jack stand before working on the car I'd hate to see something happen to you You're a good man with a big❤
The guy is a delivery driver with a child, he obviously didn't have much of a choice as he needs the income for his child, but can't get income without driving. No one likes hearing grinding while they drive, if he had the money to fix it sooner, he would have.
Some people have NO idea what is wrong with a vehicle and the cost is not only $20. They thought it was a brake line. You can see that they have almost nothing. Some people aren't really smart, only smart asses.
@@patchadams4me I was talking about regular maintenance... I'm glad to see I'm not the only one getting a massive amount of brake repairs. Ncely done Matt.
You're the man Matt, you're awesome and a blessing to many people ❤️👍
Never greased a brake pad in my life either. Working since 1992

You really only want it on the ears to my knowledge since thats the part making contact while sliding
@@24GarrettFPSlots of people with too much grease on their ears these days 😂
She got them new self changing brakes. Seriously though holy crap that's an accident waiting to happen.

Honesty is rare unfortunately in the mechanical world.
Good job
I love watching your videos, keep uploading please Parks
The only product I use is the anti squeal. When there's an issue w vibration on certain vehicles.
But very rarely.
Doing a great service
never seen rotors that thin on a driving car😂😂 btw you and your vids are awesome!🤟
I was told the grease on the pad can prevent squealing noise from the piston and pad contact area.
Love your vids brother. Much l❤ve from Michigan. Excellent work and lkq I almost got an engine from them but wasn't sure so good to hear a shout out😊
I only grease the slide pins and caliper brackets. I put the hardware in then the pads. No problems.

Who got the Rock Auto magnet? The caravans and town and country vans are extremely hard on brakes because of the front end weight.

Someone is not listening to their car. It's an easy fix though. But who let's their brakes reach that point?
People with no money.
This is tipical of so many people they hear a noise and keep driving because they havnt the money then it ends up costing so much more cheers
What green do you use for the caliper bolt pins?
Yep ditto what grease?
I've never heard of greasing the back of the pad either .??

I don’t use grease on the back of the pad, I use the orange stuff that is almost like silicon for brakes. Makes the pads not shift and squeak.
Here's the deal 😂
I've seen a brake pad pushed right through the rotor
Fella said it didn't make any noise or no sparks
Caliper Not Caliber
Seems like they need some longer lasting fleet pads on that delivery vehicle
Here’s the deal
those vans have undersized brakes.
I’ve never greased pads ever and I’m over 50.

I dont do metal anymore, effort and cost is to much :)
It's a brake CALIPER not caliber
Well, thank God you pointed that out or he'd have never gotten the job done.
Drivers such as this should have their licenses taken away
Grease on the back of pads prevents squeaks.
You take any donations to help people in need?
"Caliber"?

We do and they have NEVER checked my brakes.
This why the poor are poor. Neglecting to replace a $20 set of brake pads ends in hundreds of dollars worth of damage.
