    Oh bearer of the cup,
Our laments are for your ears,
We called you, but you hear us not.
    Many a drinking companion
have I loved for his friendly face.
And from his hands I drank wine!
When he awoke from his drunkenness,
he drew the wines kin to him and sat up!
Four time he served the wine to me, from four goblets.
    Oh bearer of the cup,
Our laments are for your ears,
We called you, but you hear us not.
    The branch of a willow bent down;
One who loved the twig, died of his passion.
Trembling in his heart; weakened in his strength.
When he thought of separation, he wept.
Mourn for him who wept for,
    Something which happened not.
    Oh bearer of the cup,
Our laments are for your ears,
We called you, but you hear us not.
Why did my eye go blind at a glance?
By your side, it denies the light of the moon.
If you so desire, listen to my tale:
My eyes went blind, because they wept too long.
A part of me wept with me,
    About another.
    Oh bearer of the cup,
Our laments are for your ears,
We called you, but you hear us not.
I possess neither patience nor endurance!
Why do they accuse me so much?
They reject the complaint under which I suffer.
My condition is lamentable: the weakness of despair and humiliation of passion!
    Oh bearer of the cup,
Our laments are for your ears,
We called you, but you hear us not.
A burning heart and flowing tears,
Confess to an error but are not accepted.
Oh wash away what I describe to you.
My love for you has grown and grown.
Do not say: I want your love!

Beautiful song. It is arabic. I can't say wether it is jewish or not (I am learning arabic so can understand some words and recognise the prosody). It can perfectly be jewish, no problem on that. Andalusi people spoke Ladino, Arabic and some kind of Romance language, so they could compose beautiful poems and songs using those fantastic ways of expression that God has blessed us with. :) Peace!

Very pure. Beautiful - straight from one heart, to another .. Here is the marriage of the Hebraeic and the Islamic, with no animus in either .. Quranic, even .. and redolent of the Song of Songs, or the lay of the maiden prophetesses, in the historic age .. Thus, the Sufi, and the Hassid, are almost one and the same

For some people ignorance is bliss. For those who are not ashamed to publically broadcast their intense states of blissfulness I have to say that the language in which the musical pieces are sung is the language spoken in Spain in the year 1492. It cannot be English, as I seriously doubt you could understand the language spoken at that time. It cannot be Hebrew, as the Sephardic Jews had been in Spain since the roman diaspora, which happened as you have proved to know, in the second century B.C. So by that time, they had been living in the kingdoms of Sepharad, as they called the Iberian Peninsula, for thirteen centuries -or more, as there were older settlements-. As for Arabic...came on!!! are you jocking?. The Spanish Jews evolved with the times and were part of the Iberian culture speaking the languages of the kingdoms they belonged to. Hebrew was for the Scriptures. What you are listening there -this may kill your state of bliss a little- is a precious testimony of archaic language which has survived. It’s like going to a museum. They Sephardic Jews were so sad to abandon their beloved Sepharad that they kept the language and traditions of the time for us to enjoy nowadays. God bless them!!!
I have not been able to listen to the song yet...I am commenting on the title 'musica sefardí' and sephardic language or ladino.
