RANS S21, RANS S 21 Outbound, LSA/ELSA or experimental aircraft, RANS Designs.
I had the opportunity to take a test flight in this plane at Sun N Fun, 2018. Great plane!
I've wanted a RANS for decades now. At 59 years old it's getting a little close, but I'll pull it off! *lol*
That is a very impressive build. Really has my interest!
I'd love one of those, looks nigh on perfect for farm strips etc. Good point too an aircraft needs to be STOL (and I'd argue rough strip capable in terms of robust under cart) and not just SL (short landing LOL!).
And as always a superb review, talking about all the salient aspects plus well balanced.
Excellent review. You always do a great job Dan!
Any other reason, besides more HP, why RANS went with the 180HP Titan rather than a Rotax 915is? Thanks Dan; always a great resource.
That little flap trick on take off is WELL used by many back country bush pilots around the country. 😉
Gorgeous Plane...I want one !!
We Alaskan's use this technique to get off the ground quicker like you said. Check out the Valdez fly in which is the first gathering of Pilots from all over the world in Alaska every year. Observe the technique being used by the pilots in the short takeoff and landing. The pilots conpete in the different classes of Aircraft to get the trophy for the competition. Would love to see Randy there this year to compete with the S-21 and see if he walks away with the trophy.
Love this plane. Working to get one !
Nice review. This is a very popular cub style homebuilt and I appreciated the details.
Lovely plane... Speed and big utility, a great combo to have. The American LSA rule is a bit limiting. German autobahns see 150mph all the time so to set an arbitrary speed limit in the sky below this kind of sucks especially when America has such large dimensions. Maybe LSA needs a tweak. It should have available to it a "speed" rating such that you can attend a course to achieve coz it makes no sense to buy a fast horse and then have to hobble it.
Bravo!
You're aware however it can also be built as experimental in the US .. with the Titan 180 able to cruise at 150 or more and a much higher weight limit ..There are no limits of speed or loading in this category other than what the manufacturer sets .. the only problem being you need an actual standard pilots liscence ..
Gosh what a great report dano. Wish i could afford that plane
I like this one the most.
Nice review. This type of airplane along with KitFox is on my radar. I am trying to decide which way to go.
Im having the same conundrum .. Absolutely leaning towards this one except it doesn't have folding wings like the Kitfox which is actually a huge feature if you need it once ... However it would seem this can do all the back country off airport stuff a kitfox can do but have quite a sizable advantage with speed ...Most everything a Kitfox can do plus 30 knots is a very big deal .. Then there is the all metal .. Here in Phoenix a fabric plane left in the open will be destroyed by the sun ...sooner or later it will ... Nothing survives the desert sun over time but stone and metal .. Wood , plastic , fabric all destroyed given enough time ... Though that could easily be solved by a hangar or canopy tie down .... And ..... this plane I believe can be built in 300 less hours than the Kitfox .. another very big deal
Went back and forth between the S21 & Kitfox so many times they both went up in price while was debating - LOL!!! settle on the Outbound. Put my deposit down at Christmas.
@@starbicycle how is the progress on your S21 Outbound so far? is it completed? How long did it actually take to build?
Love this airplane.
45 gals is awesome... However, the Rotax 915iS engine is my choice, 141hp, turbo, fuel injeted.
Should be flying with the 915 iS in two weeks!
That thing has a turbo? I’d love that. Be great at high altitude.
Expensive engine though
Autonomous Collective 1,700 ft/min, 130 MPH IAS and burning a gallon less from initial tests on a tricycle gear S-21 equipped with the 915.
A folding wing would be a hot seller for this one.
I am pretty sure it has a folding wing.
The Ultralight Flyer
@@ultralightnews I thought it was the Kitfox with the folding wing.
KitFox, Aerotrek A220 and 240, RANS, and two or three others.
The Ultralight Flyer
If sold complete build, what is the max hours on the airframe?
It sure would be helpful if prices are mentioned or where we can go to get that info
The price is not mentioned because it changes, and is available from the manufacturer. Where to get further information IS talked about at the beginning of the video and SHOWN in ALL of the graphics IN the video!
Took me less time to find prices than it did for you to type that comment.
Strange that they don't offer a shock absorbed swivel landing gear like the super stol eliminates bounce landings and over un-even ground.
Do any of the Rans airplanes have folding wings?
Does it have folding wings like highlander or kitfox?
Yes it has the ability of folding wings and tail.
Is that the same cowling from the s19?
are there provisions for float fittings on the fuselage?
Yes.
The Ultralight Flyer
Should have used dampers instead of springs.
I heard Titan engines no ETA on getting them some say 2-3 year waits they are made in China now.
You know... Americans seem not worried about guns, me nether.. yet worry about speed... This LSA speed cap rule is ridiculous.
It absolutely is ... but If you have a standard pilots license in the US then don't build and register it LSA .. Build it experimental and then there are no speed restrictions ...until around the speed of sound ... Still ... The LSA speed rule is a bit ridiculous in my opinion as well ... however why go LSA unless you have gotten really old and lost your medical ... It is no harder to build and register it experimental ..
@@markdoan1472 I agree yet I think experimental does not allow any commercial paying passenger use which means resell value is compromised.. Not totally sure but think that is the case.
👍👍👍👍👍
