They are extremely territorial, they've been known to kill their own young when there's not enough space on their mud pools or water holes, just imagine that they are willingly to kill their young for space. That is exactly the reason why you may want to think twice before getting close with these creatures. Before taking them as pets thinking they will eventually become docile, There's actually a reported story where a man had adopted a young baby hippo, he cared and fed it throughout it's life and treated it like his own son. When it reached adulthood Guess what the hippo's wild instinct eventually kicked in and Murdered it's own owner.
