Militant atheism | Richard Dawkins

  • www.ted.com Biologist Richard Dawkins launches into a full-on appeal for atheists to make public their beliefs and to aggressively fight the incursion of religion into politics and education. Dawkins' scornful tone drew strongly mixed reactions from the audience; some stood and applauded his courage. Others wondered whether his strident approach could do more harm than good. Dawkins went on to publish The God Delusion and become perhaps the world's best-known atheist.

Is he judging correctly if he judges all religions as a danger to human society and God as non existent?
"Open your mouth, judge righteously and plead the cause of the afflicted one and the poor one." Pr 31:9
While it is noble to speak up for those who have been or could be afflicted or impoverished by religion is it righteous to prejudge all religions as the same. That is prejudice. That is like judging that all races are or everyone of a certain race is the same. It is like saying all countries are or everyone of a country is the same and condemning them for it. Should he not make such negative assessments on a denomination basis? Putting them all in one basket approach is unjust!

@@bjm6275 It is pretty obvious he is talking about all religious which have influence enough to affect society. Anything else small enough which doesn't come under all, but certainly does not have any influence either.
With how common religions like Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, ect. Leave a lot to be desired compared to modern standards of morality. People tend to ignore all the flaws and keep believing and twisting it to their liking which leads to a lot of problems.

The most brilliant speech I ever heard from Dawkins was his reading from his own book on evolution about the way the human bodies ability to fight off infection through the immune system. It was spoken so plainly and made absolute perfect sense, anything I had known or thought to have known went right out the window because it felt like primary school explanation suddenly supplanted by collegiate theory that I felt In My bones. Richard Dawkins, along with the rest, hitch, Harris, etc. Are needed at the right time.

This people have done in seeking for truth than any religious would ever do. Did you know these people are neurologist, biologist, professionals in a subject or another and spreading more and more truth and knowledge?
For humanity's sake friend, before crying like the typical child-minded believer/religious, take some time to see what is more important here, human life. Not god, did you know some people give their life for god? kill others for god? love more god than their own family members? I have grown up in an evangelical Christian family as well, which has always been very closely connected to the local church. To treat evolution as a possibility is practically blasphemous. I have changed my thinking recently, and have made the decision to put aside the frustration generated by unsatisfactory explanations and arguments, as well as the fear of offending God. Well, if God is real, and since God must be the God of truth by definition, then in no case could he be offended by me accepting the facts as they are, according to the present evidence, and according to the logic with which we are endowed. Evolution offers me no reason to stop believing in God (leaving aside Dawkins's narrative, about which I have some objection), in fact every time I consider an issue I try to get closer to God with that issue. Not fearfully, but openly and honestly (as it should be), but without letting it affect my relationship with him. However, what I haven't done yet is share this with my family. Perhaps it is cowardice, but from my point of view it is not necessarily important. I do not want arguments or problems with them, and the fact that I believe this or that they believe something else does not affect their lives or my life or my faith.

    • @evilcowboy
      @evilcowboy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@Scott Scotty The Roman empire had a historian named Tacitus who had no vested interest into believing Jesus because it wasn't their belief and was prosecuted by Roman leaders. He wrote about Jesus being crucified by Pilate. It points to more than just speculative evidence and he isn't the only Roman historian of that time that spoke of him. I am unsure what more proof is needed to prove Jesus was a real person.
You are right even Islam doesn't recognize Jesus as being divine and I could see where people would have reservations against thinking he was who he said he was. However, there are many authors to the original scrolls of the bible and to corroborate such a claim in a time where blasphemy was punishable by death it doesn't make sense to me that these people would lie and increase the odds of death.
I guess its a personal experience thing but the reason I believe it is because Genesis 1:3 explains sonoluminescence and it correlates strongly, there is no way Moses knew about physics but yet he described it with that verse. Plus it accurately predicted the rise of atheism, thats a prediction unheard of during that time as civilizations of the time centered around God and that would have been blasphemy.
Also there is the fact that the conservation laws of thermodynamics will not allow for nothing happening after death. Energy doesn't work like that. Its not created or destroyed but yet some people seem to think we are capable of violating a law of physics thats impossible to violate. That is 50% of an atheist view proven wrong by science so the question becomes can they be wrong about the other 50%.

Your statement says "we are all murderers" but some of us murder one more than the others. Take your pick, which is more absurd or elucidate Mr bard.
EDIT: Sorry for this thread taking up space out of all proportion to the content of Dawkin's lecture, but you can read a lot into a simple statement. And maybe people who use numbers of those who share their belief as validation off their religion should also agree that the greater numbers who don't share their particular belief greatly invalidate their position. After all that's how democracy and legal judgements work. And by that measure all faith is invalid.

There are two ways to disprove God and have total confidence. The first is to define "God" and show that the definition is inconsistent with existing data. The second is to fail to define "God", at which point a belief in God is indistinguishable from a belief in nothing. The definition of God is often left nebulous, which is what allows it to evade being disproven, but if you give the definition a form consistent with the usage of the word, it's often pretty easy to prove the theory wrong.

I definitely go one god further in the case of naturalism. All these man made gods are delusions that separate us from our Creator, God, from and to whom are all things; from the universe to the atom, from heaven to our soul.
A lot of Christians need to show more respect to scientists who study God's original textbook; nature. On the other hand a lot of scientists would greatly benefit by acknowledging the limits of science and by being open to the profound truth of the inventor, manufacturer and sustainer of the things that he studies. How do you explain the computer software program, Paganini's concerto or the Lamborghini without its designer or author?
Living things, the cell and the language of DNA are infinitely more complex and built on a language system. Evidence tells us that such things are logically derived from a planner, a mind, an intelligence and a power.
We would do well to discard the little man made god of naturalism to open out minds and soul to the reality and person of our Creator, God.

@Σאgßと I don't think he'd have much choice in the matter if they decide to come after him. At least not if he wants to live. All one can do if persecuted by their own government is to run and escape the country to one that won't extradite you for most likely made up crimes(by your home country) just so you can be sent back to be imprisoned, interrogated, tortured or executed. All because you're a possible threat to their regime. Or you can stay and start a revolution that'd most likely fail and end with you dead. May cause enough uproar to change history but it's doubtful since all the government has to do is change the narrative, mix in some verifiable truths with the lies and most people will believe it.

I am a militant non-theist. Regarding "Patriotism" in the USA as it is widely accepted and understood: I cannot really argue that "Atheists are not 'Patriots." A non-theist in the USA holds the same truths as a non-theist in Iran, Iraq, or anywhere else is the world and those values are not defined by borders or race. Atheists in the USA are not going to start a war with Iran's , or Iraq's, or any other nation's non-believers on who doesn't believe more. On the contrary, it is reasoning and diplomacy with other like minded individuals all over the world that would end that nonsense of war and poverty. So...yes, we are not 'Patriotic.' Does that mean we would not defend ourselves or our country for an unprovoked attacked? No, it doesn't mean that. I have little doubt over a lifetime of being an out-of-the-closet Atheist, if the USA firmly became anti-Theist, another country in the world would believe that alone would suffice an attack. Peace.

Checked translations didnt believe what i ve seen then i said lets check "English" translations i was in shock by what allah said in quran. Fully cruel and no logic at all. These things werent told to me when i was growing up i was told that islam is so peaceful and allah is merciful.
Then i ve met Carl Sagan and Richard Dawkins since then i am an Atheist and i can say i am just happy with it. At the end of the day whatever you believe when you are near death it is the science that is gonna help you. When you get flu it is the science that will help you not allah or any other god .

The reflexive leftism of skeptics like Dawkin's is entirely incompatible with their claim over evolution, equality would be the ultimate in extraordinary claims, and he fears this truth to the point where he must lie. And so they have become creationists, because people like him can't deal with the fact that they have proven the case against themselves based on his own theory, the ultimate mind virus is atheism as it kills its host.

Can I ask you something? Can a people become a nation again after having been dispersed in different parts of the world for more than two thousand years? And in the countries where they were exiled, they were the minority and were heavily persecuted. They were not allowed to secure jobs and were often expelled from their lands..
And throughout the ages, kings, queens, political and religious leaders tried to annihilate them...do you think they could survive as a people? Could they become a nation again and become a powerful force in the region shortly after they reestablish themselves in the land of their forefathers?
And as they tried to rebuild their tiny country, they have to survive the attacks of the neighboring nations that have more well-established armies? Considering they are a small country, with no army at that time, as small as New Jersey with the land mostly dessert, surrounded by enemies who attack them from all sides--- and with hardly any natural resources that even Mark Twain in his diary said that even a cactus was having a hard time to grow in this arid, bone dry and dessicated land ? Will they survive? What do you think?

Go to church on sunday, kneel and sing praise, celebrate humility and good deeds, than honk or shout on the middle-lane drive in front of you on the way home, look down onto servers and waiters or your neighbours etc.
Religion today is hollow and dangerous, rarely does somebody really live a religious life. Many use it as a form of justification to violate or abuse others.

Religion in the town I grew up in was basically something people did at home or otherwise behind closed doors. Not because it was shameful or private, but simply because it wasn't public and didn't need to be. I didn't know that atheism was a thing until many years after my schooling was finished. We just called it non-religious. "Are you religious at all?" "Nah." That was the usual response. That, or "My family is but I don't go to church or anything." Non-religious was the percieved bulk of the population, with the religious being multiple smaller groups who did their own thing and minded their own business. I liked it that way.
The way the US does it initially baffled me, and the way the fanatics and fundamentalists try and force their views on others, subvert politics and deny science infuriates me. If they want to worship shoes or gourds, let 'em. But leave the rest of us out of it, thankyou.
PS: Nice to see Dawkins with his old fire. His recent cancellation at the hands of the intolerant seems to have taken some of that from him.

This is my ghost-banned reply to *Filmeseverin* in *Peter O's* thread from 3 weeks ago.
_"There are two kinds of atheist"_ the fact that you can think of only two reasons become become Atheists tells us more about your limited scope of cognitive function - no doubt your disadvantaged upbringing is partly the cause for this - you were taught WHAT to thin rather than HOW to think and you've never managed to throw-off those Mind Forg'd Manacles.
Personally, I was a card-carrying Christian for the first 15 years of my life - I merrily absorbed everything the holy men & community said was true. But at a Christmas Eve Midnight Mass (High Anglican) I started to actually listen to what I was being told and being of an inquiring disposition wondered how we know that it was *actually* True. I did a lot of studying - both scripture and commentaries and at the end of it my mind decided we *couldn't know* - what became clear is that the scriptures were written to build a nation - the Hebrew Nation - to give them a history, identity and justification for occupying the lands they stole and the death that were necessary in order to achieve it. I am an Unbeliever because my brain thinks it's all made up - and won't let me believe. Belief is NOT a Choice. You either do or you don't according to what information your Limbic System has processed and how determined yo are to learn the Truth and not just accept everything that someone, with a vested interest in having you believe, has told you. I've known many people lose their childhood faith in Christianity - and NONe of them did so to embrace EVlI. Your attitude to this and them is bigoted and poisonous.
Now, *if anyone here has been deceived - it's YOU.* And by whom? *Saul of Tarsus.* He was the one whose epiphany on the road to Damascus was that he could best destroy the Jesus movement - by getting on the inside and changing it. There are three accounts of his 'Road-Trip' and they don't agree with each other - always a sure sign when people are making up stories. The clues are all in your scripture.
In Jeremiah 31.31 - we are told that the new Covenant was between G0D and *only* only the children of the Houses of lsraeI and Judah. No-one else. Cheesus tells us he *'was sent only to the Lost Sheep of the House of lsraeI'* (Matthew 10.6 and 15.24.) He sent his disciple everywhere but told them to keep away from the Gentiles in Matthew 10.5 Note, the Great Commission in Mark 16.15, is *pseudepigraphical* - we see it at the end of Mark, but it wasn't there originally, *none of the early church fathers commented on it* - so it was a late addition and no-one even knew where to put it - it just sounded too good to leave out.
When Saul came along - he set about dismantling Jesus' legacy and replacing it with one of his own making and if you want to know where we can see that just seek out *_'Jesus vs Paul'_* and read the millions of words about how Paul corrupted Jesus' mission to the Israelites. You are desperate to believe Paul - because you think that is the way to the Kingdom of Heaven - well, it wasn't promised to you, Paulhas deceived you.
Paul is the father of Christianity as we know it today - he is the *only* one who teaches that 'Unbelievers' are intrinsically eviI - and you have learned the hatred in your heart from him. Is is both laughable and saddening to see what poison you come up with to post here day after day - you must lead a very sad life. If you want to carry on Jesus' mission - go to lsraeI and preach to those who have lost their way.

    • @L.Ron_Dow
      @L.Ron_Dow ปีที่แล้ว

@@filmeseverin _"just an example that Cheesus has addressed to _*_all humans_*_ is Matthew 8.5-13"_ No, NOT *_ALL_** humans.* Only his own people. Let's look closer:
It starts with _"When he entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him asking for help"_ which is completely different in the Luke version of this story where the Centurion goes to the Elders and asks them to ask Cheesus - the Centurion only meets Cheesus as he approaches his home. Small fry. In both versions Cheesus is impressed by the Centurion's faith in his authority and compares that to the lack of faith shown by those people he has met so far: _"I tell you the truth, I have not found such faith in anyone in lsraeI!"_ In the near identical version of the story in John 4.46-53 - Cheesus, in v.48 puts it slightly different, saying that the people around him won't believe until they see 'signs'. Same thing.
This is the whole reason for Cheesus' mission: _"I have beet sent _*_only_*_ to the _*_Lost Sheep_*_ of the House of lsraeI."_ Too many lsraeIites have lost their way (no doubt thanks to the Pharisees.)
Now, and I'll bet this is the line you are banking on:, in Matthews's account *(but not Luke's or John's)* we get: _"I tell you, many will come from the _*_east and west_*_ to share the banquet with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven"_
So, where does this little addition come from? All you have to realize is that the New Testament is a re-imagining of the Old Testament with Cheesus in Moses' driving seat. So where do we see language like this: In Isaiah 47, that's where:
_"Now, this is what the Lord says, the one who created you, O Jacob, and formed you, _*_O Israel:_*_ “Don’t be afraid, for I will protect you. _*_I call you by name, you are mine._*_ When you pass through the waters, I am with you; when you pass through the streams, they will not overwhelm you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not harm you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your deliverer. I have handed over Egypt as a ransom price, Ethiopia and Seba in place of you. Since you are precious and special in my sight, and I love you, I will hand over people in place of you, nations in place of your life. Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. _*_From the east I will bring your descendants; from the west I will gather you. I will say to the north, ‘Hand them over!’ and to the south,_*_ ‘Don’t hold any back!’ Bring my sons from distant lands, and my daughters from the remote regions of the earth, _*_everyone who belongs to me,_*_ whom I created for my glory, whom I formed - yes, whom I made!"_ Isaiah 47.1-7 NET.
As with so many expat communities, traditions are adhered-to far more faithfully than those who stayed at home. When the sons of the House of lsraeI return from exile in the east, west, etc., the diaspora - they come back with a far purer Faith than those who stayed in lsraeI. They are far more likely to dine with Abraham.
*This was never a suggestion that Gentiles would be welcome in the kingdom of Heaven.*
Yet again, your messages reflect your own made-up reIigion - not that of Cheesus. We see from the three different version of this story that His message has been distorted by people with their own agendas - including *you.*

    • @filmeseverin

Those who desperately fight against the truth about/from God/Jesus ignore everything that proves them wrong, including that simple example from so many others. The honest readers know about the mission of Jesus' apostles into so many countries etc.
The message of the Gospel will reach all the nations. _"But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come."_ Matthew 24, 13 -14

When I was a boy the catholic religion was literally stuffed down my throat by my grandmother on my father's side to the point of regurgitating it. One day of many days my grandmother took me to a catholic temple and I saw people kissing the statue of dead person on the cross that depicted the crucified Jesus. The cross was laid flat on a long table. This picture horrified me as a small boy as I watched people in frienzy shedding tears over a piece of metal portraying a dead person. I wanted to get out of there and fear that the whole ordeal instilled in me made me rethink about the religion in general. The deranged furious behavior of those people leaving their own saliva on that figure was shocking. I almost puked and said to myslef; No, I am not going to be one of them. First, I was scared. Second, I did not understand this abhorrent kissing. Third, the dead individual on the cross. I noticed that this was not a celebration of life but a party of death. No! It is not for me. I celebrate life! And I still do it today. If this religion glorifies death, then it is not a religion that leads you to life.

Dawkins is an embarrassingly ignorant fool. He’s a far better talker than he is a thinker. In today’s world, appearance comes before everything else. Which is why fools like you love Dawkins: he sounds and looks intelligent without having enough nuance to actually invoke any real critical thinking. He makes you feel smart when you listen to him without actually making you think. He was a mediocre biologist who got famous by applying his knowledge in biology to everything. It’s how he created his theory of memetics: applying knowledge from a field he’s experienced in to one he isn’t experienced in, and that’s what we ended up with. It’s like your grandparent who has no idea how a computer really works explaining it with analogies to stuff they know from their lifetime instead of actually trying to learn how a computer works. You don’t need to be smart, intelligent or open-minded to understand what he says. It just makes you feel smart, and I guess that’s enough for you and the rest of the other fools praising him here.

The truth often hurts! Erich Von Daniken, who wrote Chariots of the Gods, visited Dr. Javier Cabrera in 1976 and asked him to lend him a stone from his museum. He agreed to this request and on receipt he drove to Ocucaje to meet Basilio Uchuya and asked him to make him a stone. Please note: Basilio took a stone the size of a man’s fist, drew lines on it with a pencil and began to carve on it with the blade of a saw. Forty minutes later he handed Von Daniken the stone with the crude outlines of a dove on it. The stone was not elaborate or well done. It was primitive and unlike the stones in Cabrera’s Collection. He questioned Basilio regarding large-scale engravings that have complicated patterns like those in Cabrera’s Collection. Basilio assured Von Daniken that he could make large-scale intricate engravings, but only, if someone gave him “illustrated papers!” Enough said! In other words if someone gave him the artwork he could copy it! So he could copy from the original genuine stones! Von Daniken estimated that almost every stone in Cabrera’s Collection were many times larger than Basilio’s small imitations. Indeed a great number were five feet in diameter and two to three feet tall, weighing between 200-500 pounds each, in fact twenty engravings of the size of the primitive figure that Basilio scratched on the fist-sized stone would fit on the average stone in Cabrera’s Collection, not to mention that Cabrera’s stones are done with outstanding artistic skill and imagination. Von Daniken calculated that it would take a forger 375,000 working hours or 31,250 days. This would mean a forger would have worked twelve hours a day without breaks or interruptions [no meals, no drinks, no toilet breaks, no time spent with their families etc.] This would be for 85 years in order to finish this monumental task and this does not add up in the real world. If the stone forgeries were engraved to sell to tourists why does the collection exist? Surely this is not the way to run a business and be successful with so much stock on your hands! Von Daniken compared the stone that Cabrera loaned him with the freshly carved stone that came from Basilio’s hut. Here are his words: Right angled clean scratches showed on the new stone under microscope, whereas microorganisms could be seen in the grooves of the Cabrera’s stones under a fine glaze end of quote. My comment: He is referring to the patina and varnish which could only accumulate over thousands of years in the very arid conditions they were found in. This patina and varnish which he described as a fine glaze, is evidence of antiquity. The stones are andesite in nature and are hard to engrave, not like sandstone or limestone. There is more to come!

Every so often, late at night, I get the idea to start a church of Scientism, focused on celebrating the utter miracle that is the actual Universe, as understood by science, with no invented sky god interjected in the way.
For the Universe, as understood better and better each year through science, is truly utterly miraculous. It really isn't necessary to make up anything to get one's religious rocks off on the real thing.
