  • When you think of Ayrton Senna, you think of his legendary rivalry with Alain Prost in Formula 1. However, few know the story of his first ever major rivalry which came in the 1983 British Formula 3 Championship with Martin Brundle. This is a rivalry that went down to the very last race of the season and a story about how, against all odds, Brundle took the fight to Senna in a way that nobody could’ve predicted. Joining me to tell this tale is the legendary Kiwi, Josh Revell who was kind enough to contribute his voice and his writing to this video.

British F3...the series which never should've been killed off. Yes, we now have BRDC F3 but it isn't quite the same.

How is it different may I ask?

@@triplecrownracing different organisers, no longer on the same level as the 'top' F3 series, and no longer runs to the same technical regulations as F3 (or F3R for that matter)

Great Video. Just bought a Ralt identical to Senna's to race against Brundle's car in Classic F3

Brilliant season - I remember following it race by race, in the US via the top US racing magazine of the era, On Track. Great summary guys, thx!

im currently doing a documentary on classic f3, i was wondering if you had any archive footage of the series and the drivers?

Pretty much everything you see in this video is pretty much the absolute maximum I could find. Footage from these types of racing series from around this time period is ridiculously scarce and it probably took me a few hours at least just to be able to find the stuff in this video. Sorry I couldn't be much of a help. Thanks for tuning in though!

Senna had an engine with one less update opposite brundle, so I’m sure that could’ve been mentioned at some point

This is not really accurate, though, as the reason why Brundle could actually match Senna was because Eddie Jordan was having his team's (Brundle drove for Jordan in F3) Novamotor engines tuned in Italy, whereas Senna's were being tuned in Italy. After Senna caught wind of this, he flew himself personally, to Italy and had his engines tuned there as well. This all happened before the last race. After that, the balance was restored. To affirm that Brundle was anywhere near Senna is almost blasphemous. Martin Brundle was a solid driver, Senna, however, was out of this world, so much so that there's been no driver able to match his feats since, and dare I say before he came along as well. But, fantastic job on the rest of the story. Loved every minute of it.

Hi , interesting above / I was racing my Alfa GTV6 in 1982 /83 - and i think in 83 had forgotten to my bring medical certificate to Donnington -----a driver had died at the wheel the week before at Silverstone, so the Donnington establisment were freaking out and wouldnt let me drive .----( way before the days of emails ) ---------our mechanic knew Eddie Jordan and so Martin Brundle agreed to drive the Alfa , but after a rainy practice in the unfamiliar car, where Gerry whistled past scraping doorhandles + nearly took him out / he changed his mind to concentrate on being competitive with Senna . we were all pretty young and i remember Senna couldnt speak much English, but i stll have an image of him sitting on a rusty trailor mudguard whilst Martin was being strapped into the Alfa :) Norris Miles
