- The full title of this piece is 'Dans le rêve laissé par la ballade des pendus'.
Jehan Alain (1911-1940) was first and foremost famous as an organist and composer of highly original and evocative organ music.
He was also a keen pianist and composer for the piano before his tragic, untimely death during WW2 - a huge loss to the world of music.
Thanks to the efforts of a very few pianists, this music has been championed and it comes across as being indeed original, basking in the aftermath of impressionism, but aware of the classical forms and of the innovative musical progressions of the time.
'Dans le rêve...' is at times an unsettling dreamscape, but its rhetoric is hypnotic and convincing.
Daniel Fuchs - piano
Enjoy!
Wonderful music. More pianists should play this repertoire. Thank you for posting it!
To 4candles, I really cannot thank you enough for posting these piano pieces.
For anyone interesting in hearing more from Daniel Fuchs (the pianist/organist) please do get your hands on his Bach cd: Sinfoniae BWV 772 a 801, Prelude et Fugue en la mineur BWV 894, Fugue en si mineur sur un sujet d'Albinoni BWV 951
Productions Gallo cd 1308, recorded June 2009 on a Steinway piano.
Alain is grossly underrated as a composer but Daniel Fuchs should no longer be so grossly unnoticed a pianist.
One of my favorite pieces, and you play it so beautifully! 2011 is the 100th anniversary of Jehan Alain's birth.
to 4candles, i would be more than happy to send you a a copy of fuchs' terrific bach cd - let me know privately.
Thanks again for uploading these great recordings, sincerely.
he is good! Some French speakers don't write better!
Thanks you, maybe can I try one piece of him next year.
The performance was enough to convince me to order the score and learn it. I am assuming that the title refers to the “Ballade des pendus,” a poem by the 15th century poet Francois Villon, who was himself sentenced to death by hanging, though that sentence was commuted to banishment. It is said that he wrote the poem while awaiting his death sentence to be carried out.
Thank you for this fascinating insight!
Upon further research, Alain appears to have the poem pinned to his wall.

Thanks for your enthusiastic comment and your suggestion for a further disc by Fuchs. The Alain is the only recording of his I know, but I will keep my eyes open for the Bach on your suggestion! Best wishes.
@MrAdrianGunning Thanks very much for your comment. I don't think there's a piece by Alain that doesn't have a strangely magnetic quality. I would love to be able to be in a position to promote this music in a more concrete way. I should have gone to a Conservatoire!
@DrMikooMichael Thanks for your comment. Daniel Fuchs plays this selection of pieces. I would be interested to see if anyone other than the Jehan Alain society puts on a centenary celebration. He is a vastly underrated composer.
Thanks, but for some reason I can't find the 'Send Message' click-through on your channel!
