    Billy Joel thumbing his nose to the music industry. He was at odds a lot with the critics back then. He often says he was his own worst enemy. He even burned bad reviews on stage during concerts. Thankfully the fans didn’t care if he played the political game with the industry. We just loved his music and his honesty. It was Piano Man that got cut down for radio play. The original version is over 5 minutes but got cut to 3:05 in the DJ version. I think he got the last laugh. Thanks Harri. Great reaction.

    Written before he was a mega star. He hit some bumps early on, and Piano Man was the song that was cut down for radio play. In concert he use to run around the stage to multiple keyboards, pretty cool to see live.

    In 1971, Billy Joel had a disastrous contract that he bought his way out of by giving up all rights to music he wrote up to that point. It left him rather jaded about the business and led to "Piano Man" which is quite good.

    It was his take on the industry after he had a massive hit with the Piano Man single and album. Nobody could have gotten away with this slam on the music business. Except for Billy Joel. Then he went on to even greater success for another 18 years after that.

    I love this song & you are right about the meaning. "The Entertainer" is from Billy Joel's 1974 album "Streetlife Serenade". The song is a cynical & somewhat satirical look at the fleeting fame of a musician & fickle public tastes. One day you are a big star & then when someone new comes along, you are forgotten.

    People covered this song in the 70s - I remember Anthony Newley singing it - I remember knowing it before I found out he wrote it - I became a fan just before The Stranger came out - saw him live at his 1st MSG concert in 1978 - Best Concert Ever!! 8:30-12:45 AM!!

    I think the public must be very frustrating for entertainers too. It isn't enough to make it; you have to keep making it with every new song. And sometimes great songs don't catch the public's heart. My favorite Billy Joel song is Innocent Man, not an especially big hit. But it has brilliant lyrics. Sometimes a song like that can get really big if people take the time to listen to it carefully. Your take on The Entertainer pretty much matches what I think about it; he definitely made his feelings known.

    Thinking most if not all of Billy's song are autobiographical. Wish you would play The Stranger, it's an amazing tune. Thanks Harri

      He already has and quite a few other of Billy's songs other than the hits that he already knew, which I think has opened up his perception of Billy.
      Not that I am saying Harri thought anything negative but you can tell that he was not aware that Billy's music was so wide-ranging in styles.

    One of my favorite Billy Joel songs! Of course, back when he wrote this one, he was still pretty much a nobody, so I think it reflects his take on the industry more than summarizing his own career.

    He doesn't say he has to write shorter songs. He says if the song is deemed too long, other people chop it down for radio without his input. That's what he hated. The line comes right after "took me years to write it..."

    This is the "album version" of this song. There is a 7th verse (sung as the second verse) that he has done live several times, that was cut from the song on the album. There are several early live performances of this song that have the full complete song with the cut verse.

    • @somewhat.random
      @somewhat.random ปีที่แล้ว

      For anyone interested, the original second verse of the lyrics:
      I am the entertainer
      I dress to fit the style
      I wear all kinds of sparkles
      I flash the crowd my smile
      And when the night is over
      And I stand without my clothes
      Perspiration stains and varicose veins
      My eyes look shot
      My belly's got a pot
      And there's a pimple on my nose

    (inspired by The Righteous Brothers "Youve Lost That Lovin feeling" ) Its a true monster of a song that deserves to be heard more. cheers!

    a little known fact nowadays is (as you pointed out) he talks about a song "in order to be a hit" has to be cut short.(I think it says 3.05 but I could have the number wrong) it doesn't matter because whatever the number he said .. his 45 version of the song WAS cut down and ran the EXACT amount of time the song says!

    Good catch on the synth, I thought the same. Is that the minimoog? How in the world I never had one of those as a kid! I would have loved it, my parents would have smashed it. All they wanted to hear was classical. Forget about any rockabilly or anything else. My old man hated me making "weird noises" and "Quit making all those g*d damned weird noises" and would backhand me across the room if I did it around him - they call it "beat boxing" now. Too early I guess. 🙃

      He also does so live on No Man's Land on electric guitar and has done so at An Evening with..... type of events on acoustic guitar for The Entertainer and even Bob Dylan's The Times They Are A-Changing, when he toured the former Soviet Union, which are both on here somewhere.
      In fairness though, it is more a case that he can strum a few chords rather than actually play by picking out the individual notes or strings for a song.

    • @Prof_Jeff
      @Prof_Jeff ปีที่แล้ว

      TBF, he himself says "We Didn't Start the Fire" sounds like a polka on the piano and that it's a "guitar song". Hence, he plays guitar on it.
