    WHAT IS HIGH GRADE STONE?
    Anything you can run a 1/2" or more flake with a pressure flaker.
    HEAT TREATING:
    Heat treat a few FLAKES of everything you got except HIGH GRADE Raw Stone, Obsidian, Dacite, Basalt, Hornstone, Sonora, Fort Payne, or Rhyolite. Start with flakes and spalls less than 1" thick for 200°F for 24 hours to dry it out. Then raise the temp to 275°F and hold for 4 hours. Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back I at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 4 hours.
    Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back in at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 1/2 hour, the raise to 375 for 4 hours.
    Repeat with temp going up 50°F until you reach 600°F or nice chippable stone. Whichever comes first. If no good result, or things blow up, let us know.

    On Memorial Day I Thank All Veterans for their Service. But its really for those who gave their last full measure of Devotion For their country and didn't make it.
    Veterans Day is for the ones who made it home and or didn't see direct combat but served honorably.
    We're all glad you are still with us cause without you many of us wouldn't of ever picked up the hobby. The Veterans that lived in our family care home taught me the difference between the 2 Days when I was young. 🇺🇲🏹😎

    I come here to learn, a lot of these harder materials to knap are what my ancestors would of used here in nova scotia. It's nice to watch someone do other materials beside obsidian and chert all the time.

    Jack anytime you have a quartzite or quartz knapping video, I gotta like n watch. I Knap that stuff and started on it along with glass slate and bone points. I never had access starting out when I was younger to cherts, flints, obsidian, agates, Jasper's, dacite, or rhyolite. Until much later now. So I'm well rounded and familiar with that quartzite. indirect percussion defiantly does the trick

    Here in Virginia the old guys used wood billets made out of dogwood and persimmon. Of course, Jack Cresson uses all manner of types of wood when he flint knapp’s. I use dogwood and it works for these materials like quartzite, NC rhyolite, argilite and Normanskill that need tons of weight and power behind them to get big thinning flakes. I’ve tried using copper on it but it’s just not as effective for me. Shaft punches like what flintknappintips use also work however it still needs lots of force.

    Welcome to biting fly and tick country! :) I spent nearly 35 years in R&D developing products to repel and attract such critters. Permethrin clothes spray works reasonably well to keep the bulk of ticks off you; but is a relatively poor repellent for the flies you mentioned. The best overall repellent for both the flies and mosquitoes is probably going to be a product labelled for human use containing at least 20% picaridin. That material was developed as an answer to some of the problems with DEET, and actually has much better repellency against biting flies. (I worked with it before it was even registered.) The "dragon fly hat attachment" works about as well as bunny ears or reindeer antler hat ornaments...i.e. they don't! Stay away from all those disease vectoring arthropods, and keep on flaking!!

    I often wonder how all the ancient knappers didn’t go blind with the amount of razor sharp flakes flying around! I seem to remember a reference to Ishi speaking of what to do if the rock got in his eyes?

    • @KnapperJackCrafty
      @KnapperJackCrafty  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, Ishi would pull on his upper eyelid (by the lashes I assume) and violently hit himself on the back of the head. No joke! However, it was observed that his eye would get very watery and that's what probably flushed out the small flake(s).

    Sawyer's permethrin spray to treat clothing is some of the best stuff I've ever used to keep ticks off ya. The fake dragonfly idea seems to have some merit as well. Deer flies and horse flies are demon spawn to begin with so if the sight of a dragonfly keeps the nasty SOBs away, it's worth a try.

    I've made a couple points of the quartzite that I found in some creeks around here. Didn't think about heat treating in, knapped it raw. Like I tend to do most times. Quartzite is something I'll use if I don't have any other material, it does work for me. It's not nearly as challenging as the green chert we have around here. That stuff is just hard. If I ever get my hands on some sizeable nodules again, I do intend to send you some of that stuff.

    You gotta take what you can get from material like that. Step let it in. To thick good enough.

    Random thought in my head, you should sell the broken ones because some people watching you want to lick up your tears. It’s great you don’t cry about it on camera. I have been telling people that napping trains you to deal with frustration, and failure.

      @@KnapperJackCrafty well here’s my admission. I hardly watch your auctions. I love the live action stuff from one knapper to another, It’s kinda like porn. lol. My job has been leaving me with very little time and not enough sleep so when I wish I was napping I just pull up a jack crafty video. I’ve learned quite a bit watching your videos, but some of the best lessons have learned by myself just slowing down makes a difference.

      @@KnapperJackCrafty I’ve been digging through your bottle bottom videos lately because that’s what I’m up to. I seem to have a hard time getting the curve out of the edge. but it must be good enough because somebody was willing to trade me a bag of coffee grounds imported from monsoon regions in India, raw to be roasted by them, for a couple of my arrowheads. One green and one clear.

    If ya learn to knap vein quartz, then there really ain't much else to intimidate ya 'cept fer mebbe sum ol' rhyolite or that black kanawha.
    Amd yes, you should do a Hardaway. And a Hardaway-Dalton and a Hardaway-Palmer too. If'n yous so inclined, that is.
    That bein' said, we stan the Stanleys like we stan the Kirks, the Pinetrees, the Guilfords, and Morrow Mtn. points too.

    I’ve got some quartz here in North Carolina that’s red like that, does that always mean it’s been heat treated either by people or nature?

    • @KnapperJackCrafty
      @KnapperJackCrafty  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Usually, if it's red and it knaps well, it's heated by people.

    As grainy as quartzite is, how sharp can you actually get it ? I ask because my edges are about as sharp as a folded piece of 60 grit sandpaper. Mine are to use in a Flint lock , not arrowheads. BUT needless to say , my results are not too good with Quartzite. When successful though, it throws a good spark.

    • @KnapperJackCrafty
      @KnapperJackCrafty  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Only sharp when compared to flesh. Anything else strips the edge off faster than a roadrunner through a coyote trap.

    Perhaps, just perhaps.....you are trying to make a better and more refined, point than any of the quartsite points illustrated in the book. They mostly looked fairly crude if I remember correctly. That stuff is as nasty as you say. Of course, right after I made that comment, you said about the same.....that you need to try for a better width to thickness ratio. Me and my big mouth/keyboard.
