yep, my durge playthrough was a tiefling monk who tries to temper her murderous rage but sometimes it slips through. She's horrified when this happens so she tries her best to do good, but just can't
I wish all those who go "why even play Dark Urge, if you are not going to pick the evil choices?" would get that. Not that there's anything wrong with enjoying an evil playthrough, but going for the struggle and defiance route is exactly as valid.
So, if I'm understanding everyone correctly... Astarion: Vampire that wants revenge against his master. Lae'zel: I hate mindflayers I hate mindflayers I hate mindflayers I hate mindflayers I hate Gale: Yeah, I'm a coolass wizard who bedded a literal god, no need to praise me... yet. Shadowheart: On a holy quest to deliver a holy D20. Wyll: I accidentally got a pact with a devil and I want out. Karlach: I'm a soldier of hell who wants to go home. The Dark Urge: The voices in my head tell me to kill, and I want them to stop.
I really like this setup! It kind of reminds me of how some Greek dramas and Shakespeare plays begin, with a chorus introducing the main characters and telling you where the story will go. The brilliant voice acting certainly helps; I could imagine each of these characters taking center stage in a theater and reciting these lines before an eagerly awaiting audience, then stepping back so the next character can have their turn. All that's missing is the lovely narrator.
I mean that's one way to look at it... Another way is first session the DM goes around the table and has players introduce your character. In fact I'm sure the narrator is meant to function as a DM.
Okay … Astarion: the veteran player who knows just how much BS the DM will put up with. Lae’zel: The player who’s bursting out of their comfort zone to play a badass character. Gale: the nerdy bookworm who would totally build a robot if he could. Shadowheart: the new player who has no idea how to create a backstory, so the DM made one for her. Wyll: the normally quiet guy who gets bullied, but doesn’t let it dampen his spirits. Karlach: the tomboy punk that people are afraid of, but is a real sweetheart deep down, and can let that softness show around her friends. Maybe defends Wyll’s player from bullies. 🤷🏻♀️ Dark Urge: the jock who is also new to the game and had the brilliant idea to play a chaotic evil character that doesn’t know they’re chaotic evil until they fail saving throws.

Astarion has 200 years backing him up and when he's not the one doing stuff for fun or protect himself he's the first one complaining about how everyone else are weirdos, best seen with an impersonator, where he complains he can't notice if someone's been replaced and half the reason is because they're already all weirdos. Dark Urge has a dead giveaway but only if you’ve played the other BG games or are into DnD lore would you ever pick up on that giveaway and if your in that group you could probably assume what’s going on with him even without watching the introduction, as for the others it’s kinda the same deal for the most part, Lae’zel talks about Vlaakith like 2 minutes into the game so not a huge deal, Shadowhearts Shar worship is extremely obvious, her circlet and armor also kinda gives it away, if you don’t know anything about the lore then none of what she said or what she wears would mean anything to you anyway, Astarions one of the few that’s pretty bad in terms of spoilers, Karlach is pretty up front about her story and her story’s extremely straight forward anyway, Wylls is kinda the same deal as Durge where unless you know beforehand what the Warlock class entails he doesn’t really give anything away in terms of his story, lastly Gales introduction really only gives away his backstory and says nothing about current in game events so not a huge deal either
