    [Update: 18 June 2020] Below is the current status in a nutshell for those of you not already on my email notification list. If you'd like to get on the list and receive details about pre-ordering your Fix Kit, shoot me an email at SelectTech.Fix@gmail.com and it'll auto-reply with the most recent information including details about preordering. So, here's where we stand:
    552 Series 1 and Series 2 designs are finished. Prototypes tested and approved. Manufacturer reviews complete. Now sitting in the queue waiting for our turn to go into production. Pre-ordering is underway.
    1090 design is finished. Prototypes tested and approved. Manufacturer reviews complete. Pre-ordering to begin this coming weekend.
    If I can find time this weekend I'll post a video update with the very first finished pre-production discs fresh from the local shop. They'll be exactly the same as what you'll receive when you buy a set. Early adopters ordering U.S. made sets...we're ahead of schedule. Looks like production may very well begin before the end of the month. Stay tuned!

      Awesome! Thanks DTD! On one hand it is sad that people all around the world have experienced this same issue. Frankly, it should have been engineered correctly the first time. But that is, as we say, water under the bridge. I'm super pumped now to help everyone fix their dumbbells so they can be used safely. Don't worry man, I don't anticipate any restriction at this point on where I can ship.

      Hey hey Paul...awesome man! And thank you. Frankly, I wish the fix was ready two weeks ago. It'd be flying out the door right now. It seems people have already lined up around the block waiting on me to deliver.
      But, I don't want to be that guy who rushed things a bit too fast. The one who disappoints the people who supported his project from the day it was just a DIY throwaway video. Bowflex already let us all down the first time. My goal is to deliver on what I've promised: a fix that works right the first time and forever. Once you install it you should never have to think about it again. It'll just be there doing what I designed it to do...to keep weights off of our faces and feet.
      I appreciate your patience. Please know that I am working quickly, in between all my other obligations, to get these to market as soon as possible for you and everyone else.
      I think you may have already signed up for email notifications, but I'll post the signup email just in case: Selecttech.Fix@gmail.com

      Thanks Jason, I appreciate your support. Folks like you and others inspired me to turn this into something more than a DIY fix. I usually spend my time helping manufacturers improve their products. This is my first opportunity to do things the way I believe they should be done, start to finish...with no bean counters and executives overriding my recommendations. No BS shortcuts, no cheap ass materials, and clear communication with all of you from start to finish.
      And if I screw up, it's on me. Nobody else to blame. So my goal is to get this right the first time.

    Thanks for all you do Joe! I can't believe Bowflex continue to sell these really dangerous products. Surely it's only a matter of time before someone gets seriously injured?

    • @AverageJoeInnovationsLLC
      @AverageJoeInnovationsLLC  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sadly, Will, I have photos of a couple customer injuries, and stories from others who have had a plate fall out during a workout. Bowflex never really acknowledged the disc issue. Their 2012-ish product recall misidentified the dial as the issue, and even then they claimed it only affected something like 17k sets. I think Bowflex is just milking the market at this point until they decide to end-of-life the design.

      @AverageJoeInnovationsLLC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Melissa, sorry about the delay. I'm not on YT daily so I answer when I can. More often than not, it's a 19mm socket. Occasionally 18mm. Those universal pin-style sockets aren't the best unfortunately. An inexpensive socket set from Harbor Freight isn't a bad investment. They aren't Snap-On or Mac, but they also won't empty your bank account.

      @AverageJoeInnovationsLLC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Man oh man Johnny....sorry for the late reply here. Though you did email me too. The tolerance on these dumbbells can be pretty bad. The slightest movement of a disc can allow a plate to slip right by. Fortunately the aluminum doesn't flex under these very light weights. All 1090s are the same. There's no series. That's only for the 552. Did you see my emails about the preordering? Would be happy to get you in with the first production run to get this permanently fixed for you asap. Let me know.

      Awesome Bored! Blew my mind. Something happened with the Nautilus/Bowflex supply chain for sure. Suddenly all of their SelectTechs are completely out of stock for months. So the regular manufacturer prices aren't available. And replacement discs are increasingly rare. And the secondary market seems to have universally decided to hike the prices on dumbbells (and likely other equipment too). Have you seen the prices on replacement OEM plastic discs now? They were overpriced at $16 last year. Now you're lucky to find one at $25-40.
      Here's one single replacement plastic OEM disc on eBay going for $70obo with 6 people watching it: www.ebay.com/itm/Used-Bowflex-Selecttech-552-Series-1-Replacement-Part-Disk-5/193452436509. $70, seriously? They're nuts.
      No worries man. For those hoping to use their SelectTech for years to come, I'll make sure you all have a set of discs that'll never drop another weight again. Bowflex can pound sand.

      I broke 3 of my disk on one and have paid a combination of 75$ for a 2-3-5 disk on series 2.. crazy for a piece of plastic... after I replaced them and tightened the nuts on handle it’s getting stuck in the base? Do you happen to know which factories Bowflex is using? Do you happen to have the names of the factories or the cities in which they're located? Or was that just a general statement about restarting? I ask because I ordinarily spend a great deal of time in China, but with current visa restrictions I've not been back since January. I'm completely familiar with how things have been playing out there. I have contacts all around the country. By the way, Singapore is on the bucket list....looking forward to visiting one day.

      @@Slot1025 The end bolts in the dumbbell shaft can only tighten so far before they bottom out on the end of the shaft. They should simply be tightened until snug plus maybe half a turn...anything more does nothing. Have you checked to make sure the discs are seated properly within each other? They should be parallel to each other all the way around the circumference. If they aren't properly seated within each other, they'll get hung up on plates when trying to insert or remove the dumbbell from the base.

    • @AverageJoeInnovationsLLC
      @AverageJoeInnovationsLLC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there Bandit...have you had problems with those parts? i mean have they become damaged in some way? I had considered redesigning both the red/grey cross bars and the selector dials (the ones that you turn with the weight numbers on them) with some cool aluminum replacements. But I considered that more of an aesthetic change, so I focused my efforts on the serious safety issues first.
      Frankly, I am very seriously considering designing an adjustable dumbbell to kick all their asses. A durable affordable adjustable dumbbell would be awesome. Something that works correctly the first time, and that lasts a lifetime. Not an easy feat, and there's some serious competition, but I'm up for the challenge. If I decide to embark on that journey, I'll let you all know.

    • @bawalther
      @bawalther 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AverageJoeInnovationsLLC Yes, unfortunately I have a broken red end piece. I just moved and it seams the dumbell took some damage and cracked the red piece at the end. I have several cracked discs and the red end is completely split in a circle at the base so it won't turn the dial to adjust anything. A whole new affordable setup would be awesome. Certainly more and more demand for home weight lifting equipment thanks to COVID too. Hats off to you for engineering a fix to the discs and maybe a whole new system.

    They have got to be cheaper

    • @AverageJoeInnovationsLLC
      @AverageJoeInnovationsLLC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey hey Ryan, I'd like to say higher volumes would bring the cost down, but with CNC it's really all about the machine time. An hour is an hour at these machine shops. Design-wise I stripped out all of the fluff (e.g., unnecessary radiuses, etc) to reduce machine time to get pricing down to where it is today. I lost some of that savings when aluminum began rising in price again over the past couple months. We'll continue to look for ways to trim cost without compromising quality.
      Along those lines, I'm in discussions with a couple companies about producing a die cast aluminum version. That holds some promise if it can meet my performance specs. I envision down the line maybe offering a die cast and a machined version. We'll see. Stay tuned!
