Thank you for this clear and honest review. I love gaugemaster products having both analogue and the prodigy system. Key the loco in and off you go. Imagine fussing through up to 100 locos each time! I’ll give up. I have bought into the Hornby HM7000 system and having worked out how to connect a loco to it, it works a dream, being quick to thumb through the locos with a direct image of the given loco with a photo. One can run a lot more than a hundred locos, not that one will, but at least you can store a lot more. I love the automated function, rather than fussing to key in each function (imagine what it would be like using this infinity!), it is automatic and one can also quickly tap a given function on the screen. Furthermore I can run all my DCC fitted locos and do not need to specifically install an HM7000 chip, merely by adding a dongle onto the DCC controller (Hornby Select or Elite). This runs my O Gauge locos as well. I’m surprised the manual suggests we spend too much time on our phones, tablets etc, they must be aware of this. The sound chips on HM7000 are great value in comparison. Indeed, when I take my locos to the model railway club I can run them off my phone too!
@MuhammadIbrahim-jl8ng Hi thanks for your comment glad you found the video helpful, I haven't tried the hm7000 decoders yet but it does look a good system, I've kept the prodigey for now but yeah I was disappointed with this gaugemaster setup am suprised they released it and also there's very little on there social media about it so am wondering how happy they are with the system, thanks for watching and for the comment, I've also branched into o gauge and joined a local club and was looking at the ecos system they use but it is very expensive. Tom
So glad I watched your review as I was looking at upgrading from the prodigy like you. I think for the time being I'll now be sticking with what I've got 😊
Hi, thanks for demonstrating this and Im sure itll be great for many. You do sound in two minds over it. Personally, Z21 all day long, no remembering addresses, codes etc, you input each loco once, then set to go.
@piccadillymodelrailways Hi ill have a look at that, I like the ecos controller but I ideally want a wireless handset I can walk around the loft with, I've decided since making the video to do away with the infinity and stick with the prodigey for now, thanks for watching and for your recommendation. Tom
Hi Tom, Thanks you just saved me a lot of money was really thinking about getting one of those I didn’t see anything good on it except wireless the many times you have to turn the rotary nob worried me I’ve got two controllers for my prodigy because the nob on one don’t work anymore and can’t get it fixed no spares for over a year now and none for the foreseeable future plus you mentioned only 100 loco spacers I’ve got getting on for 150 loco’s cheers Al
Hi Al yes unfortunately the only thing that would make me keep it is the wireless but like you mentioned the dial/nob might be nackered after inputting 70 locos and also the hole handset the more i look at it does look and feel cheap compared to the prodigey i presume gaugemaster were trying to make a new system that they thought would appeal and also keep the cost down unfortunately the more i tried using it the more it convinced me to sell it and stick with the prodigey for now, thanks for watching. Tom
Hi Tom , I have the Prodigy and very briefly tried this new one at Ally Pally stand (without any programming). After watching this excellent presentation I’ve decided that Gaugemaster must have used The Chuckle Bros to design it. Cant believe the amount of steps to programme the thing. Im going to look now on internet to see if you can get longer ethernet cables or join them together as a solution. Im sticking with the Prodigy. Back to drawing board with this im afraid. Cheers .
@alantraish3368 Hi Alan glad you found the video useful and it wasn't just me that prefers the more basic system, I'll probably either try and get my hands on a gaugemaster prodigey wireless conversion or maybe try out the new bachmann kinesis when that arrives, thanks for watching. Tom
Hi, it’s not great to look at, it just looks so bland and Kier like, the more I look at it I wonder why they went down the retro 80/90’s mobile phone look route, it looks like the prototype won the fight, luckily the choice of dcc controllers is very good and you’ll always get what you want in the end.
that sounds interesting, i was looking to see if i could get the wireless conversion for it, am also curious to see what the bachmann kinesis comes out like aswell, thanks for watching. Tom
Unfortunately the wireless dongles are going to be very hard to come by. But if you are up for WiThrottle based throttles (phones) the new Nexxt Gateway would expand the capabilities of your Prodigy system. It'll also replace the similarly hard to locate PC interface cable which allows easy use of JMRI. I can send a Gateway out to you if you are interested in trying one, it's planned for release next year in the spring alongside the new throttle. The new throttle is a bit different to the current ones but retains the ease of use (press loco button, enter address or seller from library/roster and you're up and going)
Wow Tom. I was lost after a few minutes. Like you i like to swirch on, Type in loco .. and press go. I would love the Gaugemaster advance 2 as my next controller, i currently use the Dynamis, but it can lose the WiFi if to far away. So still unsure, and cost does come into it., Thanks for sharing this. Like most things, the more you use it the easier it becomes. But strange that you can't just type in a loco number , All the best Stuart
@StMaryChurchModelRailway Hi Stuart I don't blame you it took me a while to get my head round it, I'll be sticking with my gaugemaster prodigey for now till the wireless conversion kit comes out or I might even look into the new bachmann kinesis
Had mine delivered today and It is going straight back as after setting it all up I can't get a loco to run. Have even tried to reprogram it but still nothing. GRRRR.
@alasdaircook5673 sorry to hear that I've got rid of mine it was definitely disappointing mine did work but I just don't like it I'll be sticking with the prodigey for now and might check out the new bachmann system when that comes out
Hi that's interesting, I bought one of these and while I could get locos to run, it was hit and miss if I could program any with new numbers into the system and tried lauching locos off the programing track, went back gaugemaster, no fault found and went back to rails, no fault found. Asked for refund got nce system with dcc concept addons for the same price and without putting those on had to reset some of the chips that were done on the gaugemaster. Stick with what you have is my opinion I'm not sure what this system answers other than built in wireless.
@@bollinvalleyrailway I phoned Rails yesterday to send it back and they told me to get in touch with Gaugemaster who told me to alter CV 1 as some decoders are not recognised on this system so I tried what they said and have just tried again and nothing. I am now loosing the will to live with it so it has now been disconnected and packed up ready to send back tomorrow and have gone back to my Gaugemaster Prodigy and have had to reset the chips. Funnily enough I had the Bachmann Kenesis on order so cancelled that when I saw the Infinity was available. Wish I hadn't bothered now. I bought it because of it being wireless.

Your very useful video does a great job of showing why the Prodigy is the far better system, thank you! However, I’m interested as to why you opted for the Infinity now instead of waiting for the upcoming Bachmann Kinesis system which you said you’d tried. Is that even worse? Cheers, Will
@Teesbrough Hi Will glad you found the video useful, I was tempted by the bachmann kinesis and might still try it when it's released, I bought the infinity because I wanted a wireless handset and thought because gaugemasters main speciality has always been controllers it would have been a good system, I did also wait a few weeks to see some reviews or videos about the new system and nothing materialised so I took a chance buying it, I've since passed it onto a model shop friend of mine to sell and I'll either wait for a new prodigey wireless conversion to come out again or try the kinesis, I also like the ecos system but it's very expensive and some older decoders don't seem to register on it and I have quite a few older dcc locos
Hi Pete glad it was helpful, i tried to be fair with it but i dont think this system suits me either the more i use it, ill either wait till the wireless prodigey comes out or try the bachmann kinesis, thanks for watching and for your input. Tom
Perhaps just buy the Gaugemaster DCC05 for the Prodigy Advance and use an old mobile/tablet with the engine driver app. I bought the DCC05 a while ago and it certainly does what you're after - allowing you to walk around while controlling your trains. However, we all find it difficult to let go of the wired controller that we're used to.
Hi yes i see what you mean, ill probably hang on for the wireless conversion kit for the prodigey as i dont like the idea of using phones or a tablet as you mentioned, ill stick with the prodigey for now anyway, thanks for your input and for watching. Tom
Hi, very good review of a system that many modellers will turn to, personally I believe a colour screen would have been an option, the older prodigy unit looks so much better with the blue backlit light, the handset design could have been looked into more as it doesn’t really look futuristic in my opinion going by what other manufacturers have done, rechargeable batteries are a must these days, I believe gaugemaster have a lifetime warranty on their analogue controllers does this cover the dcc units as well? As long as your happy with it then that’s all what matters, many thanks for sharing.
Hi now you mentioned the colour screen i see what you mean, i don't now if its a way to save power with it being on conventional batteries and also yeah the more i used it the more it felt a bit cheap even though its far from it, i think i may stick with my prodigey system for now and might look into the bachmann kinesis when that arrives, thanks for watching. @@northwesttrainsmodels The more I look at the infinity handset the more I think it reminds me of an old 90’s mobile phone, the design is retro instead of futuristic with colour and body, it’s quite bland and lifeless in my opinion, a colour screen and motorised main control wheel would have been better, the cost would have been justified if they had made more of an effort with the visual impact, the Bachmann Kinesis looks very nice and appealing, I bet the raised prices Bachmann have put on their products has helped to pay for the development of their new system, I hope you make the best choice for your new system, take care mate.

I think the ecos is easier you can just type in the number and go as to the database of locos you have pictures plus you can split them into steam, diesel and electric
@stephenbromley2302 Hi yes you are right the ecos is brilliant and what they use at the o gauge club I go to, I thought the gaugemaster infinity would have been a similar system, the main reason I don't go for the ecos is I want to be able to walk round the other end of the layout with a handset, thanks for watching. Hi you can change the name of the loco to class 37 and then add the loco number as the identity, if you have a few 37s you'll probably have to put the class 37 followed by its unique number or company, hope this is helpful
@DugmerJunction Hi that seems to be what alot of people are doing and one reason why I wanted to do a video on it because I couldn't see any reviews for it anywere other than what gaugemaster have advertised, thanks for your input and for watching. Tom
Looking at the system it looks awful to find your way around, the handset looks cheap and wouldn't it be a bummer if when the batteries run out you lose the whole of the stored information so you have to program it all again?, hopefully that won't be the case but I really can't help but feel how cheap it looks. There's nothing about it that looks quality. Thanks for showing it, I'm glad I've seen your video and although I'm not in need of a controller had I have been this wouldn't have been one I would have bought.
Hi Chris glad you found the video helpful, i was really disapointed with it i've been waiting for a newer wireless system to come out with a proper hand held as i dont like the idea of using my phone or tablet for now ill stick with my gaugemaster prodigey and sell the infinity, ironically the only thing thats quick and easy to do is delete locos from the library lol, thanks for watching. Running 20 engines at once puts too much stress on the controller. Keep it to 6 engines at once, 2 on the main line, 2 on the heritage railway and 2 on the narrow gauge railway. You don't need to carry the controller around, just leave it where it is while trains are running and you can move around as you wish. It's impossible to film train movements and carry the controller around at the same time. You're better off using a small compact digital video camera, meaning you won't have to charge it up very often. It also helps if you have an assistant, so there's no need to carry the controller about as I say. Or better still, a small compact digital video camera sitting on a Smartphone Tripod, so all you need to do is turn the camera round, thus leaving you happily staying put. Let the camera do all the work, and you won't have to move an inch. Happy modelling.
Hi Kelly the 009 is still on analogue for now, i would have 4 locos on at a time but i also want it to be quick to switch to one loco to another in a running session, i use a camera holder at different ends of the layout when filming running sessions so i can control the trains and do different movements, thanks for your input and for watching. Tom
@@northwesttrainsmodels Switching from one engine to another is best done slowly. That way, we can have a good look at the first engine completing a full lap or two, before watching another steamy. Slow and steady wins the race 9 times out of 10.
