Rev. Samuel Black, who was the first pastor of Rockfish Presbyterian Church, was my maternal great (6x) grandfather. He grew up in Northern Ireland, but both of his parents came from Argyll Scotland. He attended college in Edinburgh, then served as a Pastor in Glasgow for a time, before being sent to America to serve the growing number of Presbyterian Ulster-Scots, as well as many Scottish immigrants into Appalachia. Eventually, due to the higher education requirements of the Scottish Church requiring four-year college degrees, many descendants eventually became Methodists, Baptists, and the later American churches, as a growing country could not supply enough fully trained Presbyterian ministers. Many of the original colleges in America were built for Presbyterian training, then evolved from there to serve Business, Medicine, etc. (Harvard, Princeton, etc.)

He arrived in America at age one from Germany in 1744 , was deployed first as a volunteer out of 25 men to fight served i think 4 deployments and “removed to” Rockbridge county. At the age of about 85 went to court to get his Pention for being a Continental Soldier and received his $164.00 . His last name is my mothers last name . Philip Muterspaul or Muterspaugh . He signed his name with an “X”.

Hi Barbara, What interesting history! I know there are many citizens with the last name Mutispaugh in Rockbridge County. I hope you can pursue more of your fascinating genealogy. We have a Family History Center as part of the Jesus Christ Church of Latter Day Saints in Lexington. They help people trace their heritage. Hope this helps.
Thanks so much for you support and comments. Best wishes, Horace

If this is where Rockbridge Baths is located then my great-grandfather, Samuel Brown Mohler moved to Missouri from there in the 1880's. While on a train to Missouri a terrible train wreck happened that killed my great-great grandfather S.B. Mohler senior. My great grandad had relatives in Bogard, Missouri so he went on there and got of the train with $5 in his pocket. My grandpa (junior) always said the middle name of Brown was the name of the doctor that delivered my great-grandfather back in Rockbridge Bath. I wonder if there are still relatives around there.

Yes. There are Mohler's still living in Rockbridge Baths.

Yes! Many of your family still live in Rockbridge County, (Rockbridge Baths is in this county). Two of my best friends, now deceased, were George Mohler and his brother, William "Bub" Mohler. A country road near Rockbridge is called, "Mohler's Loop".
One of the Mohlers was a very competent state forest ranger in our area. A Jesse Mohler for many years distinguished himself for processing and selling country hams in Lexington, the county seat. You can be proud of your kindred.
Thank you for your interest. Let me if I can help in any way.
      Best, Horace

I might go back and listen again because you might have said and I missed it…but why did the natives kill John MacDowall?

John McDowell, the militia leader, was escorting a band of troublesome Indians out of the Virginia Valley. Near Glasgow, VA a gun went off at the rear of the column, perhaps accidently. The Indian beside McDowell, fearing ambush, instantly shot and killed McDowell. In a matter of seconds a battle erupted between the two sides, resulting in as many as a dozen deaths. Thanks for your question.
