    Malvasia Nera = Tempranillo . I always get a cherry flavor with a spicy pipe tobacco if that makes any sense. I make wine and as an experiment one year I blended Tempranillo with Barbera 50/50. I know it doesn't make much sense on paper, but in the glass, it works. Thanks for your great videos! Cheers!

    You refer to Temp as the "#3 Noble grape" ~ I thought the top 3 were Pinot Noir, Merlot & Cab Sauv? Many lists I see, say that there are only 6 Noble grapes, and they all always show these 3, not Temp ~ I'm curious why you say it's #3 ? thx

    • @AstiWines
      @AstiWines  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Jeff,
      Great questions!!
      Tempranillo as #3 ...... It depends on who you're reading or talking to and how they do their assessment; hectors/acres planted, gallons/liters produced and/or consumed, growth trajectory (which I don't agree with), etc. You'll find it anywhere from #3 to #9.
      A part of what I am attempting to do is impress upon people and paint the picture that this is a grape/wine to add to their stash. Something beyond the standard Cabernet, Pinot, Chard and Sauv Blanc.
      As far as the number of noble grapes…… Originally, there were only six, five French and one German. In the last several years those numbers have increased. In my video on Tempranillo I sited 17 noble grapes. In my up-and-coming video about noble grapes, I will site the 18 currently holding that distinction. In that video I'll talk about why the incremental increase from the original 6 to 18.
      Thanks for your questions.
      Cheers!!
      Pierre

      @@AstiWines thx for the lengthy reply Pierre :) next question: who or what Agency is the leading Authority on this subject ? I've tried researching this question but can't find an answer. Who get to call the shots ? first 6, then up to 17, now 18?

    • @AstiWines
      @AstiWines  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jeffhindman2052 Hey Jeff,
      Yeah this is a moving target. Some say 5 and some are espousing the 18. There is not an international standard or definition; some would say that International Grapes are identical to Noble Grapes others would say ... no.
      There is no official list and some nations and regions have created their own indigenous list of noble grapes.
      One of the varied criteria yet not agreed upon by all seems to be ... the place of origin and DNA structure. I've stayed away from these debates. Another relative agreed upon criteria is: does the grape maintain its basic or fundamental character no matter the terroir.
      Some of the people at the OIV has been influential and the OIV is a loose clearing house for the differing opinions. Other Americans who have had some influence have been James Beard and Karen MacNeil. Some years ago Robert Mondavi had recommended better defining and even establishing criteria for the International and Noble grape category or categories.
      In my years I have NOT come across an official list established by any of the Grape or Sommelier organizations or associations. That is not to say there is not one; I just haven't come across one.
      If you do, let me know.

    Yes. I work in a store that sells inexpensive wines, and inexpensive $8-$10 Rioja & Tempranillo is just not good. BTW, some of the best Tempranillo I’ve had comes from California.

    • @AstiWines
      @AstiWines  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can get some absolutely great ones from Spain and Portugal for around $12 to $15.... and more.... of course. You're right about the California's Tempranillo. Actually, you might try those from Oregon's Rogue Valley and Applegate River.

    • @henq

      Agree. Local supermarkets in Spain stock 90% Rioja, just 2-6 euros. But never liked any of them. Acidic, covered by wood. (I rather have a wine like Malbec, that does not need wood to compensate /over the astringent taste. ).
      Ribero del Duero , I read, gives more bodied wines.
