- In this video, my drummer friend @morgannelson6493 and I record 14 microphones on snare drum to see what we like best. We used a variety of mics including classics, studio favorites, vintage and even unconventional options. We recorded them all at the same time through two Focusrite 18i20 interfaces with all of the gains matched at -12db as well are ensured correct phase coherence. On the kick drum I used and Audix D6 and for overheads I used an Audix ADX51. No additional processing was used.

Great comparison. Would have liked to see them aimed more toward the center to lessen the overtones but, I agree that the Beta 57 was a good overall mic and did pretty well in isolating.
That’s fair! It took everything we had just to fit all the mics in there 😂
Surprising about all of those pencil condensers - I've never used on exclusively on a snare, but always for overheads (Telefunken M60) and I've always been happy with the sound. I didn't hate that Pile ('o Crap) as much as you both did. I bet you could EQ something usable out of it. Great comparison vid. Love these types of shootouts.
Thanks for the comment! I almost always end up putting SM81s for my overheads and stick to the Beta57 and Unidyne 57 on snare, personally. I could see the Pyle doing well on a really bright/piccolo type snare.
That SM57 is still feeling like that classic all rounder... Not the winner per se and always, but i'm not sad that I've always used it!
It’s a great mic! All three of the shure 57 flavors were so close and my favorites overall!
Unidyne 57 is the best forever
One of my favorites!
The SM58 is the best if you know how to use a hipass
Nice, I've never tried that one on snare before
