I did a ton of reasearch on mylar vs regular vacuum seal bags . I spoke to preppers, retired marines in their late 70's., etc and the best peice of advice I go was just the best you can. Many people on fixed incomes, such as myself, cannot afford mylar but I also do not have rice or beans stored for 20 yrs. I do a shorter time and have never ever had any problems with my food going bad. I think having something is better than nothing but to each his own! Great video...!
The old saying was "Seek and ye shall find." Today it's "Search and ye shall find." I typed mylar bags vs vacuum bags in the TH-cam search box and Gubba pops up. The had more to tell me than I'd hoped for. Thank you, Gubba!
You can do it, but it's best to just squeeze out the excess air and use the O2 absorber. Because mylar bags are slick on the inside, sometimes they don't pull vacuum well. The clear bags are textured so air can have little paths to escape during the vacuum process. I've vac'd mylar by using a little strip of the clear bag as a "straw" for the sealer to pull vacuum through. It was a PITA though.
Actually air can eventually get in the vacuum sealed bags but not in the jars if you did it right! I have stuff vacuum sealed for few years and they are fine, but you are right, for long term storage is better to use Mylar bags. Remember you can’t use oxygen absorbers from r everything, there’s certain things you can not store with oxygen absorbers.
I have been buying beef by the sidewhich lasts my family darn near to a year almost to the month. All my meat tasted fresh even at the 11th month. There are plastic bags that have an O2 preventive layer. So as far as freezer choice Iamsticking with the 5 layer vacuum sealed plastic. Now Imay need to change my dry food storage option but am darn near out of stored items. Been eating themupas not to have waste but will explore mylar with O2 absorbers. Thank you.
Hello. Where is the best place to purchase these bags??? R these the same as wallaby bags??? Can I reuse these bags and how or can I clean them and reuse??? Thank u. K
PSA: this information is good but do your research before storing your foods in either one. Oxygen absorbers do not go in everying (same for moisture absorbers) depending on the food you could make it go bad faster or worse get botulism.
For salt, too much humidity can make it turn into a block. For sugar, same thing but also ants/bugs want that stuff. Don't use 02 absorbers for any kind of sugar, it will turn it into one big rock. Also if sugar doesn't say "cane sugar", then it's likely from sugar beets and can have an earthy smell to it.

Same!!
I never realized the difference between the bags...good to know... I have always just used a vacuum sealer
Haven't tried the mylar yet gonna switch over once I get started on my long term storage. Thanks Gubba!
Very nice presentation, Gubba. You answered all of my questions, thank you.
You're welcome. Glad it helped!
What about vacuum sealing mylar bags?

@@TEAMPHY6 I've since gotten a pro chamber vac and am vacuuming mylar without a sweat.
Couldn't you just double vacuum seal things so it lasts longer?
Great information. Thank you

Great information but what about mylar vacuum bags vs. plastic vacuum bags.

Why can you not put an oxygen absorber in the vacuum sealed bag?
You can but the plastic is much thinner and can get punctured easily. Plus light can still get to the food which contribute to the food going bad.
Can you make some gardening videos this season I loved to watch the past ones you made
For Pasta is better to use jars and vacuum seal them.

Can you but oxygen absorber in vaccum sealed bag then into mylar for extra protection
You can, but you're looking at ~$0.25 for the clear bag, ~$0.35 for the 02 packet, and ~$0.40-0.60 for the mylar bag. Gallon size estimates.

So helpful! Thank you!
Love your videos
glad you enjoy them

Good info. I didn’t know
but why would you seal up things like salt or sugar in mylar bags when it doesn't go bad anyway?
For salt, too much humidity can make it turn into a block. For sugar, same thing but also ants/bugs want that stuff.

I love your channel.👏👏👏👏
You Can’t stored Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers in the freezer ever. Also for salt and sugar you can vacuum seal it in jars
But you can Can literally everything.
I like canning (mason jars) except if it drops then I have food contaminated with glass shards.
Very helpful, just saved me an unnecessary purchase
