      Agreed about Aaron's clear examples and explanations.
      Not as complex as many other tunings - DADGAD leaves 3 strings untouched and the other two are changed to just 2 notes that are octaves of two of the unchanged strings.
      Some chord shares ARE tricker, but there are a lot of 'new' chords that only need 1 or 2 fingers.
      This upload is especially interesting because of Aaron's focus at one point of leaving strings 6 and 5 open - and the fact that he shows chord diagrams.
      For anyone interested in DADGAD chords, just use an image search and you'll find many examples that you can copy/paste and print, or download free as a PDF.

    It's also helpful in songwriting to utilize the lower three string power chords. I use 3-3-3-open-open-open all the time to add that hard rock sound when ending a measure. I also throw harmonics all over the place since they all work.
    I'm sure you already know this, Aaron, but I'm just leaving this here for other folks.

    DADGAD is a modal tuning so all of the strings are tuned to a note in the scale of the tuning (in this case D major).. this is what makes the drones sound okay no matter what chord you're playing. One of the best things about DADGAD is that you can use a ton of suspension which gives a more full sound when you're performing solo... examples Gsus2=550000, Asus4/E=202200 (which conveniently doubles as an E7sus4 if you're into that kind of thing), and Em11=222000. That brings me to one of the big drawbacks of DADGAD in performance - everyone has to do it or no one can do it. Mixing DADGAD instruments with standard tuning instruments means you have to avoid deviating the third (unless everyone does it, and in the same way). But yeah I love DADGAD.

    • @AaronWesley
      @AaronWesley  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great insights. However, DADGAD cannot be considered a true modal tuning because it doesn't outline a third of any given chord when strummed open. In this case, it just outlines a Dsus4 chord. For all we know, it could be a true dorian mode, D Ionian, or even second inversion, tonic mixolydian chord with a 9th suspension.

    Hi mate, good stuff, but is it possible changing the scale using DADGAD along one song without using the capo?

    • @AaronWesley
      @AaronWesley  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve experimented with creating some shapes for the key of G. You can also learn a bar shape that works, however, you just start to lose the DADGAD open sound and I feel like it’s not worth it at that point.

  • @GustavoHCosta
    @GustavoHCosta 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Might be stupid question, but if I play in that tunning, is it always gonna be the key of D?

    • @AaronWesley
      @AaronWesley  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      With that tuning and chord shapes, yes it will be the key of D. If you want to change keys, an easy way is to use a capo and go up the neck like you would in standard tuning. Example, capo 2 would be a whole step above D which is the key of E.

    • @AaronWesley

      These are the most used chords within a major scale. You can always add “color” chords which borrow from other key signatures. This lesson did not touch on that concept.

  • @finneire2081

    E minor G major and A major can be played just puuting the thumb over top strings of the respected frets
    This is complicating things in my opinion

      If you’d like to make the Em chord a major, just change the open G string to a G# on the first fret. Keep in mind that if you decide to keep the bottom D string open, it will be an E7 chord.

    When you show the fingering for a chord, you should delineate all the notes you are playing or flash it on the screen not just teaching memorization of where to play your fingers on the frets. Explain, why and what you have when you are playing that chord. I was disappointed in this video.
