I can't even imagine what walking into my shop and looking at a 308 racecar project and a Quattro street build would feel like. I hope that counts for something on days where you feel less than motivated.

I went with PK Coilovers in Poland for the suspension on my UrS6. The owner Piotr is an extremely awesome guy, he went and personally pulled front uprights from a guy parting out a 100 quattro to cut, machine, and cnc new billet steering arms for my S6. I highly recommend them since as you will find out finding parts for Ur cars or any 80's/90's Quattro will become quite frustrating at times. Essentially when you find something you need or will need in the future buy a few of them. Also make sure you go to EFI express and get the thermostat housing, coolant temp sensor T, and coolant connection at the back of the block for the AAN. DO NOT USE ANY OEM PLASTIC. They are notorious for failing.

I know people appreciate all the work you do in every single video you put together but can we just take a minute to appreciate having to set the camera up, changing angles of the video, remembering what you have and haven’t done alongside that. Incredible considering it’s free so a like and comment from me will be a standard across all videos, I think it’s the least we can all do.

I started as an Audi mechanic at the first and largest Audi dealer in the country in 1973. I have had my own Audi repair facility for the last 39 years, and have done this job many times. It is very entertaining and fun to watch you work. Thank-you, and good luck.

On those lower balljoints, it's not actually tapered like a typical ball joint, it's just straight. The easy way to crack those loose is yes, remove the bolt, but then hammer a chisel into the slot to open up the clamp and help the shank slide out.

  • @RogueViirus12
    @RogueViirus12 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

I'd have to imagine the strut removal process is as easy as it is because they were planning on running it in rally competitions. Design it with easy replaceable parts you'd most likely going through with that kind of abuse from the get-go. The ease for the few buyers of the consumer models are just a bonus!

Awesome!!! I once had a 1984 Audi 5000 Turbo and I loved it!!! As a kid, I wanted a coupe GT or a 944. Today, as an old fart, the 944 turbo is in my garage.

One hundred percent agreed on that ball joint removal tool. That thing is a modern day marvel and I've used it on everything from old racecar Rabbits to my Toyota Tacoma and it works flawlessly every time.

My dad is a VW and Audi specialist in south africa, i have sent him the videos and asked him what he would recommend. Will come back with another comment on some advice for these things. Also 13mm 17mm 21mm 27mm and the lost 10mm and 11mm sockets will be your most used sockets with these cars. Dont know why but growing up i used them way more than all the others, especially the 13mm.
I called out the balljoint issue as well when i saw the bolt still in there. and had a good laugh at your solution. Thank you for the chuckle
That said, i cant wait for more videos andf updates on this and also your camera work man.... best ive seen in an auto channel on youtube, well freaking done.

This is a beautiful and important motor car. From the 5 cylinder engine to the drive train and the sporty hatch/wedge design cues (and it's heritage}, this is one of the greats. The You Tuber - 'Sarah -n- Tuned', has an 'Ur- Quattro' also and I believe she may be creating an episode about it this week or next. A worthy successor to the Ferrari.

I never tire of people who are first timers to working on and discovering these cars. Sure, this one is pretty dang clean and everything came apart easily, but still, they are fairly simple and easy to work on. There would have been a small plastic plier to pull those lug bolt caps out. Those strut housings are amazingly clean too! Looking forward to the next video already!

Fun fact: The rear axle is a 180 degree turned frontaxle from a Audi. Be aware that some parts on the rear one differs in the first 2 years. So order parts carefully with reference to the FIN. My garage struggled with it a lot on my 81 Quattro

I remember being a little kid in the UK running around in the woods watching these Audis rallying in the RAC and Mintex which was pre WRX days. That's when these cars dominated the rally scene. They would crash pretty spectacular too. I recall a bunch of us trying to roll one upright, man it was so much fun in those days !!!!

These struts are almost identical to a pre ‘94 Polo (Audi 50 chassis). Koni actually supply a tool for the top mount removal with their dampers. Which is a drilled hex bar with two lugs milled out of the face. Best solution use in conjunction with a half nut to locate it whilst breaking it free.

Use the stock differential and gearbox. Works just fine! A Flywheel from a 3b engine and a Sachs 707 clutch. IF you can get hold of an 01E gearbox you can swap that in with modified gearbox-mounts and a mix up of parts from a Audi S4 (1992-1994) and the original gearshift…stuff. (don’t know the english word).

A little tip to get recalcitrant tapered joints out is to bind the rubber gaiter in a strip of wet rag then simply warm the taper area with a gas torch and they generally fall out.
P.S. that isn’t a rally quatro, it’s a quatro coupe, the rally quatro was based on a four door car with a much steeper windscreen. They simply cut and shut the car to get the short wheelbase. Why? I don’t know

When you take the crankwheel off, get a HUGE breaker bar. Do not use an impactgun. The keyway is known to fail if you do so. A 6ft breaker bar should do the trick to loosen the bolt. Oh, and the torque that is thightened with, get a 3/4" torquewrench. I've broken a 3/4" to 1/2" impactadapter trying to thighten one of those crankbolts

loving this. get yourself a quickjack 5000TL! GAME CHANGER for me and perfect for your open spot you often work on cars. great for 95% of the time when you just need the car off the ground, but dont need to stand under it. like ferrari and Audi. the new ones also raise an extra 3" (24" total) which is perfect height for me on a creeper. im not sponsored, paid for mine after 20 years of jack stands. its been crazy usefull for all my racecars.

Paused at 2:17 to say, I owned and worked on an 02 a4 1.8t Quattro with no audi knowledge going in. Did a clutch (trans out on my garage floor), water pump/ timing (put it in service mode) replaced all the old plastic coolant flanges (which on the Quattro are sandwiched between the back of the engine and the firewall so you can't see but one bolt holding them in)..... as an answer to what you said right before this point, yes....I do know how this will go for you. Paused again at 5:39, you'll likely find more of that, I recall several spots the 1.8t had proprietary tooling required, I was able to order the tools from my local dealership.

Great content, hit up the forums for where to go for anything you need. Audi tradition can get some things but have to ship to Canada then to the US. Plenty of good samaritans to help that process along. AAN is pretty stout but that motor looks like New England salt fest. Strip it down and blast/paint everything. 7A valve cover can be swapped over for more of an old school look as well.
    Cheers and kept at it

This is awesome! I have both a 308 and a UR quattro. A good resource for old Audi parts is 2Bennett out of Davis, CA.

Also, please please please. Swap out the taillights with some tinted tails from a Coupe Gt, Because if those are Treser tails, you don't want to damage those while working on it.
They are probably worth more than the car if they are Treser taillights.

I'll DEFINITELY be picking up one of those steel driver sets!! I absolutely despise having to hunt a junk socket, or a drop piece of solid stock. Usually takes longer to find than to pop out a bearing, etc... THANKS for the link!! Hopefully it's affiliated so you get a lil taste of the top.

You should look if you can get ETKA for your laptop. then you can see what the partnumbers are for your car by entering your vinnumber it shows it in a blueprint the part and car.
