original and the best .. sha rock was the bizz busting it with the guys .. love how there were mixed groups back in tha day..wonder what they all doin these days .. and is *the kitchen* still around or knocked down
She's better than everyone because all the rest had their entire life to figure it out and practice and essentially copy, She had to "come up to speed" in a matter of months (maybe a few years from the very 1st) , that's genius. AND it was not cool back then as it is now so negativity from most ppl, unlike now, not to mention no $$. It's like the kid who get's an A studying the night before vs the kid who get's an A and studied all year and went to summer school.. (and yeah, it's not from a google search, we there doin the same, well trying ;) )
Sha Rock was clear and her Rhymes were strong. She was definitely the prime example of what a female MC should sound like. If anything she should be in the R&R hall of fame by herself. Ahead of anyone you can even think of.
The only other female hiphop artist who has her talents, at least lyrically; coming from a person born in ‘83, is Lady of Rage with her song Afro Puffs. “Read. Learn a new word everyday, and study the rhythm and flow of poetry” (Lady of Rage, 1994??? And idk).
Just turned 57 for me, and it's amazing to look back and visually see how very YOUNG we were when this dropped...I mean, those cats were literally KIDS when they put this out!! wow -Strong Island, represent if you feeling this...
CRAZY! This footage is nearly 40 years old, shot in low light and looks like HD. Not only is it captured well but it has captured a moment in time that many of us wish we could transported back to. A moment when the music was raw, exciting and pure! This is incredible!
Someone's spent a lot of time on it. It certainly has anti-shake processing used on it to keep the crew steady (see the background and mic stands bouncing around). It works so well actually. The footage must've been bouncy as f to start off with. Someone loves it, they really took their time and did a cracking job on it. It looks amazing.
5 of the dopest rappers period! Sha-Roc was so ahead of her time, and she was flowin without trying to be a diva, just a straight B-Girl!! Pure Dopeness!!!
Sha Rock ripped it hard in that one minute(with breath control) than Cardi B and Nikki do in three minutes. She also has natural beauty without showing her body.
K K Rockwell and Rodney C moved on to form "Double Trouble." They had a cameo in the hip hop classic movie "Wild Style." And Sha-Rock had a cameo in the movie "Beat Street." She was one of the female rap trio "Us Girls", at the house party.
I wanna say thank you to the person who had the hindsight to record this moment in time when others probably thought he/she were wasting their time. God bless the archivists in any mode of art-a thankless but intricate Job.
OMG, where did you get this?? It should be archived at the Smithsonian! This needs to be preserved for future generations. I was a big fan of the group back in the day just based on their tapes and then their records. I was too young to see them live and I missed their TV appearance on SNL, so this video is a welcome surprise. My given name is Rodney and my middle initial is C, so you can guess who my favorite member of the group was...after Sha-Rock that is.
I used to despise the TH-cam generation but now I’m grateful. If these treasures slip through the cracks the next generation will preserve them through social media. God bless them
And I’m positive someone will preserve the ones on TH-cam my friend. Sometimes regular, intelligent, everyday people know what should be preserved better than all these huge corporations. I mean look at how Paramount and Universal treat their treasures? (Like crap lol) a few years ago the set used to film Lon Chaney’s phantom of the opera was torn down, Universal tossed the last mold of Bruce (from Jaws) in a junkyard. If it weren’t for “some guy” who found it, realized what it was, thought ‘man this shit is fucking cool’, and half restored it then an iconic prop would’ve been lost forever. Thankfully the jaws prop is 💯 restored and on display in a world class museum. Might have to Google it. Hope my long winded story proved the point I was making about sometimes people are better at knowing what needs to be preserved than big companies
I moved to NY from another country in 1979 and had no idea what the hell hip hop was. I was 14 at the time and this shit hit me like a 18 wheeler. F4+1 more was definitely one of those seminal groups that set the foundation. beautiful memories of a beautiful transformative time in music.
Sha Rock had the prettiest voice in Hip Hop history. She had a clean-cut and clear delivery on the mic. The Funky 4 + One More, was authentic. That's The Joint. Priceless.
funky four plus one was simply PURE PERFECTION, ASIDE FROM THEIR never duplicated incredible talent, their group synchronization and obvious pure respect for each other at such a young age, it is just mind blowing...so underrated, one of the best group that ever did it, real pioneers beyond their ages. At such young ages they were more talented than so many of today's rappers that are twice their years.
Real hip hop , take me back their please, I was talking to a friend of mine and we were discussing hip hop from back in the day wishing we could go back to a time like this , nuff respect due to the pioneers
i watched this today and am totally amazed that sha rock sounded better and rhyme was better than her bandmates. she looks so innocent. longest rhyme delivered effortlessly! i was like damn!!! she still going?
all the guys were always crazy about ShaRock's voice and wanted to see her but we weren't as fortunate as kids today who can just turn to channels like MTV and BET and watch their favorite artists all day
One of the BEST old-school groups! Some bands get most of the old-school fame, like Grandmaster Flash, Sugar Hill Gang, Kool-Moe D & T3, but Funky 4+1 was always one of my favorites!! Powerful & smooth, most bands couldn't flow like this, still love it!!
In my opinion, there are only few groups who have made Hip Hop/Rap a fully fledged musical art form in its own right! Funky 4+1 are one example of that. To do it whilst having a female in a male dominated genre whilst not over sexualising her, but treating her as an artist in her own right should be championed a lot more! 1980!!!!!!!!!!
Just to know how many legendary male rappers Sha rock inspired is crazy also They were the first rappers to perform on Saturday night live and Rodney C was Angie Stones man back then when she was in a group called sequence, just some hip hop history.
How you knew about that relationship it was a secret me and Keith went to school together and went to Rodney C crib and Angie was there and Keith told me not to say anything about they relationship and she was trying to talk Keith and Rodney about them getting back together

This takes me back big time. Sha rock was so fine and so skillful as an MC. This group needs to see their flowers while they are still alive to smell them.

For real can't believe her breath control abilities ❤
Impressive is right.
And SHE wrote her own lyrics ❤

Pure lyrical prowess. No smoke, mirrors, autotune, studio tricks, etc.
Is Sha-Rock even breathing? Good grief, she rocked without any effort whatsoever!
True Queen
She's nice ...
Brown and beautiful!
I do like how she was completely incorporated into the group. It's never "hey look! We have a female member!" She just melds right in
6:29 until the end - that interplay between her and the whole group = amazing!
