Dude you're amazing. This video is like having coffee with your english professor, casual and professional conversation mingled into an overall educated opinion.
    Pretty neat, keep it up👍

I adore Henry David Thoreau and in particular this essay, but then again, I share his love of walking and couldn’t live without it, I have to walk daily for my overall well-being, nature is my life 💗

this is definitely a hidden gem of a channel. it's like a video game review but with substance and merit, and none of that silly business like thug notes or other outlandish reviewers. Your thoughts are concise, helpful and great. Great presentation.

This was a great video. I have a professor right now in grad school of all things who doesn't want to hear any criticism on Thoreau at all. I decided to look on TH-cam to see if I was missing something, as it seems almost counter-productive to not allow thought in higher education, but I am glad I found your channel. You're very eloquent and thoughtful.

Just to add, I didn't even say to the teacher that I found his writing terrible; I just had minor criticisms, much as you do. I think it's fair to defend Thoreau's old school language/references, but I think it's fair game to point out that his arguments for his philosophy may be weak at some points. His prose is beautiful, but to act like he was perfect is just driving me bananas! Anyway, subscribed. I know this is an older video, so I hope you're still active.

@@genno3714 No philosopher has a perfect philosophy. Even the great philosophers have significant flaws in their philosophy, including Thoreau. Thoreau wrote "Walden" which is my all time favorite philosophy book but I still recognize the blind spots in that text. Room for critical analysis and disagreement of even the greatest philosophers is what makes philosophy accessible and open to all.

@@theblackponderer Totally agree. This class has actually made me love Thoreau even with the professor's somewhat blind admiration. Glad you're still around.

I had to read this story for one of my classes, and I couldn't seem to focus; I stumbled across this video hoping for a short recap of the story, but this actually made me want to read it!

Thank you. This really makes me open up to my mistakes and the word comes up to be more humble. I am seriously constantly changing and I learn something new everyday. Your channel is awesome.

On the topic of ignorance and knowledge, I personally waver between thinking I am smart and thinking I know nothing.
If I assume I am smart, I am more prone to make mistakes, but I also have more confidence in my ideas.
If I assume I know nothing, I am more open to new perspectives and ideas, but I often lack the confidence to convince others of the knowledge I do possess.
Perhaps it is more of an art to master. Know when to absorb and know when to be defiant, even if you are not 100% sure of your ideas.

+The Will of G I think the dilemma you bring up is the point of philosophy. It's not really about knowing or not knowing. It's more about being always open to learn new things. This doesn't mean absorbing all information that's thrown at you. Rather it means being willing to always think critically about new information, filtering what makes sense from what doesn't, and taking into consideration what's meaningful for the purpose of self-development. Philosophy is a tool you can use to hone that filter, to improve your ability to think critically about information.

The Black Ponderer I think you´re right. When I started with philosophy I searched for answers, now I look for ways to ask better questions, to find faults and strengths in reasoning more easily.

Books aren't facts but a means for you to use to figure out what there and what's still not figured out.
And even if it's figured use what you have to learn even more facts.

I think we have only the city. Walking just helps me to achieve calmness. Any excersize can do that, but who has 4 hours a day to walk?

Nice work. Your right Thoreau does go off on references to not only his time 1840’s but also things like references to geek mythology. Kind of annoying because it leave you to have to interpret his point when I really want to explicitly know his opinion clearly.
