Carrie Fisher also admitted that it really hurt when they started pushing Leia as a more feminine icon/role model for young girls. For the simple fact that these little kids were coming to her book signings, and conventions just to say that they didn't recognize her because she was old and she didn't look like the character anymore.
So, having a sense of humor, this is the way she dealt with it: She would ask the child how old they are, and they would tell her. Then she would ask them a follow up question: "How old do you WISH you were?" and they would give her an answer.
She would then respond with "Me too, kid. Me too."

I always admired his creativity for characters and story. It's just how it plays out in a script. Take Empire for an example. Lucas created the core foundation of characters and story. But the script was written by Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan. Creating a universe and its characters has never been a problem for Lucas. It's always been transferring his ideas to a screenplay. The same can be said for Indiana Jones, the character and story are his. But not the screenplay. Lucas works best when he creates everything, and sets out the main plot and allows someone to write it. Will he have a say in the script, probably. But not enough to warrant a writing credit. That falls down to the writers union. We should just be thankful for him. As his creativity was such an important part of many of our childhoods. And paved the way for many filmmakers today,

Many people treated him unfairly for his prequel films, and unfortunately it led to everyone losing the opportunity to witness his sequel story play out on the big screen. I also grow up with the prequels but I started to dislike them after I understood why somehow the Original had more. Prequels are rich in creating the franchise bigger but in the same way made the story and some parts of the universe worse. As much as I love the army of the CIS, it won't make the thing it did to the idea of the force better. As much as I love every spin off game that was created only because of the prequels like Battlefront 2, Republic Commando it won't make the beginning of constantly rewriting and red conning better. And the Movies aged badly and I can't forgive what Lukas did because of that to the original by CGI Alot of beautiful puppets (sure the new lights aber effects where better but the CGI Jabba looks awful, sure the new color plate looks nice but including and even remake some clips was unnecessary like the talk between the Emporer and Vader.
The Prequels are in overall something, where someone throwed Jesus, lightssaber and Sci fantasy in and wrote Star wars on the package. And after the awful Sequels I fear we will never get the prequels the Original Trilogie deserves

@@4477superman Ehhhhhhhhhhh some of what you say is true but also false. Lucas is far from a genius in film making, far far far far far far from it. But he is a genius in building a world and a concept of a story. In my opinion, the prequels have a really good story behind it, one of the best ever, it's just the way that it's told with the god awful dialogue, and that has always been George Lucas's weakness, he can't write proper dialogue. I re watched Attack of The Clones recently and I can say for certain that the story of Attack of The Clones is actually really good, it's just held back by the awful dialogue, ESPECIALLY in the Anakin Padme scenes, or whenever Anakin talks about Padme. There's a lot of unnecessary lines thrown in there that really don't need to be, moments where Lucas isn't respecting the audiences intelligence. That being said though, I think the main reason people love the prequels (I especially love Revenge of The Sith) is more so the world and ideas it creates, and if someone, ANYONE had told George Lucas his script and dialogue and needs to be rewritten, the prequels I personally think would rival the OT in terms of quality (except for Phantom Menace that movie just all around sucks and needs an overhaul)

It was mostly episode 1. There was just too much political bullshit in the story, and Jar-Jar didn’t help. Had he been toned down, the backlash would not have led to the creation of Count Dooku/Darth Tyranus. Ep 2 was a little too lovey dovey for too much of the movie, and they didn’t really do THAT much until the ass end of it. Which led to everything in 3 feeling rushed. Also, a lot of us has spent our entire lives with episodes 4-6, and 3 was the only one that was close to those. Basically, it was a different time, a different world.

Luckily both my parents are absolute Star Wars fanatics, my mom being born the day it was released in the uk and my dad being able to watch it in the cinema when he was 14. That meant that I was made to watch the OT before prequels which I don’t think I could ever thank them enough for. Watching the prequels now brings me nostalgia rather than thinking about it from a story perspective (not sure if that made sense), but watching the OT is when I’m fully engaged throughout all 3 movies. I also never watched the trailers for the prequels until about a year ago, and surely that would’ve contributed a lot to the backlash. Either way my point is, I understand the backlash now, but didn’t really care back then because it appealed to my child brain.

Then Dooku kills him and funds the project from his name (and Palpatine maybe funds him). Clones grow for 10 years. If Kaminoans want to ask something, they text Dooku or Palpatine, it works either way. Then Palpatine starts the war with Separatists lead by Dooku and is about to propose to create an army, but Obi-Wan finds it first. The difference between the prequels and the sequels is consistency.
There's no denying that the prequels certainly had some bad writing, but George knew where he was going with the story, and he didn't give a hoot about what the critics said about him. He made the story work and fit into the overall saga, faults and all. And in the end it spawned several beloved eras of Star Wars (Clone Wars, Old Republic, etc.) that wouldn't have otherwise existed without the prequels being what they were.
On the other hand, the sequels don't have that consistency, and the writing is significantly worse. Disney was just making it all up as they went along and hoped it would work.

It is no different then how people don't like the same music, and if your favorite artist made a song that you hated then came out and said well it's for children not you who have bought all my previous work and helped make it what it is, it's very annoying.
George Lucas sold Star Wars because he doesn't care what any of his fans think, now Disney is really crushing Star Wars for good.
PS. I loved the prequels too but Georges analogy of painting a house is disingenuous, because he marketed his movies to everyone if his marketing was directed only at kids many of these people wouldn't have bitched because they wouldn't bother to watch them, but any press is good press.

It's a bit sad how every self-acclaimed director/scripwriter jumped at Lucas' throat for not making the prequels the way they specifically imagined, while there was an entire generation (including me) who loved every single one of them. I watched the Phantom Menace on VHS about 50 times, sometimes twice a day before Attack of the clones came out, which was my first ever movie I saw in a cinema. And Revenge of the Sith is still my biggest and greatest movie experience ever, to this day.
It's just we were kids and we could't really shout our love out to the world for Lucas to hear. Pissed adults on so-called critical forums were louder anyways. Not really, the writing was just on the wall already that this was the future of most special effects work - because computers can do things practical effects and miniature effects can't, and it tends to be cheaper. There are cases of CGI in movies going back to the 1980s, and through the 1990s the technology matured to the point where it could produce convincing creature effects. The Star Wars sequels came at a point where the capabilities of CGI had grown but it still had significant limits, so I think the negative reaction to CGI *at the time* was still very much justified. But movies like the prequel trilogy, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and the Harry Potter films are all good demonstrations of what could be achieved with it.

    • @thatmusicfan4355

@@tetsujin_144 George was actually the one (or one of the few at least) who was behind the rise of CGI in the 80s and 90s. ILM was started by him; it was originally a division of Lucasfilm. The history of all of what was going on there at the time is fascinating. Pixar came out of there, as did basically modern sound and film editing. Lucas here (in 1999) wasn't necessarily a visionary, but he definitely was in the late 70s and through the 80s.

I loved the prequels as a kid in the early 2000s and have a renewed appreciation for them now precisely because they're 100%, unfiltered Lucas, and an honestly unprecented anomaly in the film industry - 100-150$ million self-funded independent films with no meddling studio executives or focus groups, just a vast canvas for a filmmaker with unlimited resources and total creative control to explore his own aesthetic interests. We'll probably never see anything like them again, not at their scale at least.

He's the embodiment of being unapologetically creative, authentically original, a true individual, a true artist.
He pushed cinema into unchartered territory, revolutionizing the industry multiple times while not giving in to the masses of audiences and executives alike trying to rip his work out of his hands and make it something it wasn't supposed to be.
Only once he felt like his work was satisfyingly tied off he thought about himself and gracefully retired, leaving his work to the aforementioned mainstream audiences and executives who, without any surprise, absolutely botched it.
Because they didn't have the vision, didn't have the spirit, didn't have the heart, didn't have the guts and didn't have the artistic integrity.

These so-called "fans" also just griped and whined when it wasn't exactly what they wanted. If something isn't as good as the original trilogy, "fans" dismiss it a call it bad immediately. Honestly, I feel like the "fans" seem to hate any Star Wars movies that aren't the originals. Not exactly or extremely close to what they wanted? Terrible. They can't look at it for what it is instead of looking at what they wanted and comparing it to that. It's sad honestly.
Everyone whines about Vader being a 9-year old kid, to me seeing him that way and that young just made it all the more tragic.

I wasn't born when the Original Trilogy came out, but I was a little kid when the Prequel Trilogy came out and I ended up getting more exposure to the latter than the former as a result.
I never once tried to think The Prequel Trilogy was supposed to be exactly like the Original Trilogy, as it's main purpose was to show just what led to the latter coming about. The characters introduced in the prequels were just as memorable as the ones introduced in the originals such as Padme, Mace Windu, Count Dooku, Darth Maul and several others. People may have said that the settings didn't look as real as the originals were due to the usage of CGI, but that didn't come off as so to me.
Honestly, the Prequels got a lot of undeserved flack, especially in regards to child Anakin. Sure, I don't Lucas made some writing flubs in several areas of the script but it still shows the love of his own work and a desire to tell a good story. Plus, he was willing to actually accept and admit where he screwed up at as well as trying to improve.
And yes, I do hate the Sequel Trilogy but it's for many issues showing off how the writers didn't care about the setting or their unwillingness to try and improve writing fumbles of their own making (everything involving Rey and the treatment of several of the OT characters, Luke especially).

I think the difference between the OT and PT lies essentially in the fact that George had more check on his creative vision in the 80's with who he was working with. With the prequels, he had complete creative control and surrounded himself with yes men. That said, there is a distinct creative difference between trilogies. I think George got the story he wanted see in the prequels, but not necessarily what fans expected to see. Personally, I had my expectations subverted, but in a way I had not considered, but one that maybe should have been obvious. The whole trilogy was a call back to the line that Obi-Wan said, "...the once good man who was your father was destroyed."
As a child I was terrified by Vader, and despite his redemption in ROTJ, he was always the ultimate villain to me. Ruthless, mercyless, deceptive, and angry. My perception was that he was just seduced by power for the sake of power. But ultimately I never considered that Vader is still just human. He is no different from any of us. He is fallen, broken, flawed. That's just human nature, and it's completely relatable. Until the prequels I never considered the obvious. Anakin just suffered from the same thing we all do; the human condition. His is the story of tragedy, and someone shape by fate. THAT story was BRILLIANT in it's moral simplicity. The prequels are still my all time favorite movies. Not because of some wonky dialogue, or some impressive but possibly out of place CGI, but because the story went straight to my heart from start to finish. The summation of the entire saga is still to this day always going to be my favorite epic fantasy fable (sans the Disney era crap).

@@Vandicoup From one fan to another, I'm glad you are able to find enjoyment in all that, but subjectively I cannot understand how. I was an avid reader of the EU, and though I really loved Clone Wars, and thought Rebels was alright, some of the liberties that Dave Filoni took with the lore I do not like. For one thing, The Mandalorian started out well, but let's face it, THAT should have been the story of Boba Fett because the story they came up with for him was antithetical to his personality even within Filoni's canon. Boba was ruthless and vindictive, but practical and prudent. Disney never should have thrown away the EU canon only to bastardize it later, and poorly too I might add. The problem is all outcomes lead to Jake Skywalker, as Mark Hamill put it. Grogu is NOT Luke's first student. So the theory that he was going to undo Kylo Ren from the lore is shot to hell. We just can't unsee the Sequel Trilogy, and as bad as it is, it's completely lore shattering. I think Dave and John are trying, but I just don't care for their creative treatment of lore. Much better books, novellas, comics, and short stories have been written that I can't appreciate this as a replacement. Is it better story telling than the Sequel Trilogy? Yes, but I'd say barely. It's too inconsistent, and they don't have the appropriate support from an incompetent Lucasfilm Story Group. The one redeeming thing I have seen was Rogue One. I really liked that movie, and thought it moved the story right into the OT great. Solo on the other hand?... We'll look, I'm really not trying to shit on the thing you love, so please don't think me wicked for saying all this. I could sound off on this for days, but there are enough people who feel like me on TH-cam who monetized their rants. I don't want to write a book here either so suffice it to say I hate Disney, and I won't be giving it a second look anymore. Sadly, to me Star Wars is dead. But then again so is Feyodor Dostoyevsky. I will however make a book suggestion to you, if you like to read anyway. If you like BOBF and Mando, check out Republic/Imperial Commando, and Boba Fett: A Practical Man. For me, those along with Knights Of The Old Republic, and The New Jedi Order are the definitive stories about the Mandalorians and their culture. Their story and history are SOOOO much richer than what Dave Filoni gave us in The Clone Wars. The old Tales Of The Jedi comics run gave us a glimpse of it back in the 90's, but author Karen Travis wrote such an immersive experience in her novels that has left me wanting more ever since. Trust me, they do no disappoint, but I must warn you, they may have you rethinking your position on some of the D+ shows you liked...😉just saying.

In all honesty, I get where he's coming from. I get he wants to make movies the way *_he_* wants to make them (which I'm sure a lot of directors can emphasize with, because all directors and/or writers essentially do what they do because they have a story to tell).
But at the same time, he legitimately has a problem with trying to get legitimately convincing performances out of his actors and I think he takes the whole "films are an illusion" thing a little too literally. I mean, he's technically not wrong, but in so doing, audiences have trouble connecting with the story or the characters. And his argument of _"Star Wars_ is meant for kids" is also a problem. C.S. Lewis once said that any children's story that is *_only_* enjoyed by children is not a good children's story in the slightest.

He doesn't have any problem getting his actors to perform, he wants them to perform in a more stilted many, because that's how cheesy space operas are, if you can't accept that, it's your problem, not his. Obviously the Prequels don't work for everybody, but their is a legitimate portion of the fanbase of whom the films resonate with

I loved the prequels, and after watching the clone wars, they are even better. The clone wars really shows the relationship between the Jedi and the clones and order 66 is even more heartbreaking when you have seen it. On their own, they might not have been too good but paired with the clone wars, they're the best series ever.

The prequels are so bad. Bad acting, bad writing, bad plot, even bad special effects. Everything is bad about them. The prequels are like a 5-6/10. The originals were easily a 10/10 with extra magic on top.........

      @i.ftekhar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@UXSpecialist you may value those thing in a movie more, but for people who like the prequels, they enjoyed that it had better world building, philosophy, politics, action choreography etc. I think it’s mistaken to make such a broad generalisation about one being flat out better

    • @UXSpecialist
      @UXSpecialist 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@i.ftekhar Better world building? Like what, the Gungan nation? You think that's better than the galactic Empire or the rebel alliance? NO WAY!!! THE Prequels had super unrealistic and lazy world-building. Not even close to the coolness or believability of the originals.
Philosophy? Ya Right!!! Metachlorians was THE DUMBEST thing to enter the star wars universe and changed the mystic qualities and power of the force being based on belief and will into some stupid, fake, lazy biocemical ridiculousness. It was no longer cool or mystical, just some stupid plot device to move the story along. I hated it. Yoda's philosophy was so much cooler and longer lasting. People still quote it today, "Do. Or Do Not. There is no try." “Fear is the path to the dark side…fear leads to anger…anger leads to hate…hate leads to suffering.“ "For my ally is the Force, and a powerful ally it is. Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter. You must feel the Force around you; here, between you, me, the tree, the rock, everywhere, yes. Even between the land and the ship.” - Yoda "You must unlearn what you have learned." Those quotes are a hundred times cooler than anything in the bad dialogue of the prequels, "It's over anakin. I have the high ground!" What laughable junk.
Politics? The emperor coming to the death star to "oversee" production was the coolest politics in all Star Wars movies. The galactic Senate might have been a cool idea but the way it was pulled off felt like a joke. Everything in those movies felt like a joke. Amidala was pretty cool but her politics didn't feel gripping, certainly not as gripping as when the rebel alliance counselled together in the war room to plan to destroy the death star. Certainly not as gripping as the Empirical counsel with Darth Vader as they discussed how to strike terror and destruction into the hearts of billions across the galaxy....
Action choreography - Yes there was more twirling and stuff, but that all felt empty to me. It certainly didn't feel realistic, just dancing but no realism... I just watched the first encounter with Darth maul, who didn't even talk in the movies, and that sword fight felt more like a ballerina dance than an actual fight. I remember pausing it and wondering why Qui Gon didn't just swipe from the right and kill him when he was blocking Obiwan from the left. It seemed silly and unnecessary to me... I would've rather seen much more force power used in really cool and clever ways in those fights. It seems the stronger you get with the force, the less you rely on the lightsaber and the more you use the force to win your duels. It would have been much cooler to see our heroes and villains use their expertise in the force to fight each other, like when Darth Vader used every piece of metal and debris to knock Luke off balance, or when the emperor literally gave Luke the lightsaber as a way to taunt him because he knew he was more powerful using the force only... That stuff is more believable and cool for these force masters.
Nothing in the prequels was compelling. Nothing felt cool or mystical or awesome. It was all just a flimsy show for kids with a lot of imagination but pulled off in a ridiculously silly and shallow way........

@@UXSpecialist well I gotta say something about the philosophy. As a prequel, it shows you why Yoda failed and how he got the true wisdom of his greatest failure(palatine winning against the whole Jedi knights wich were about 10000), a single man destroying the Jedi order. My point is that on his exile he changed his way of seeing things because of his greatest failures.
Now, about the politics, I think it's pretty good and it shows you something of actual politics, I think that this was George Lucas whole idea. Plus the politics were indeed to o long for the audiences, but I liked it and it showed us a little bit of context about the creation of the empire

God bless his heart. His exactly right. Yeah, they were HIS stories that we were lucky to see. The entitlement of the fans of the OT is simply ridiculous. It's one thing to criticize this and that, and a different one to say: "the movie should have been about X". Also, the politics of the prequels get better with each view. Palpatine's masterplan is truly phenomenal.
