@AlexEnterprises "With the end of the Golden Age, we got to see the end of Guts's search for purpose...." I want to rebuke that. He didn't stop searching for purpose, not until after he gets the Berserker Armor. The Golden Age was all about learning to love again, and Conviction and Black Swordsman were all about what happens when Guts persues an unworthy purpose; it's only when we see him calmed from his rage by Casca that we see Guts decide for himself what his purpose is. Given the choice between fighting for revenge and fighting to defend those he cares about, we see him pull himself together and decide his own fate, right then and there, to carry on for the sake of others, to use his strength and rage for something greater.

In berserk, as is alluded to here, guts's sword is his will to life, or in other words, his purpose. The sword in general has a quality of will in berserk, as is shown with casca. It represents the will to live and the taking of responsibility for one's own life. In makes sense then that gut's sword has always been large, too large for a man, or when he was younger, a boy. The swords guts carries, being larger, show that his will to live is larger than others, which is ironic because he himself does not see a purpose for himself. That is, not until his mountain training, where godo tells guts his own life story, and it being so near guts's in symbolism, shows him his purpose. Godo, like guts, never knew or thought he had a purpose in life. But Form a young age, like guts, he was given his purpose without knowing it. Godo since childhood was taught to swing the hammer, and make swords. Guts from childhood was taught to swing the sword (perhaps godo makes the sword (the purpose for life) and guts swings it, an interesting thought considering godo shows guts his own purpose). It was not until much later in Godo's life that he realized what his purpose was and is to make swords. Guts upon hearing this realizes that he is much the same, that his purpose was right in front of him the whole time, his sword was right in front of him the whole time. Considering that the sword is a representation of the will to life, then it's interesting that guts's swords have always shattered. At this point it's not all to litteral because every time this happens guts does not suffer an existential crisis, rather, it reflects that his will is not strong enough and that a new will must be forged. But even this sounds wrong considering guts, until the eclipse, has never really been 'broken' (I'm not counting the fights in which his sword breaks or he is 'defeated' because in those instances guts does not loose his will to life or never knew he had one). Indeed even in the fight with the leader of the holy purple rhino knights guts' s sword was only broken to be replaced by a larger, more powerful sword, which was zodd's. Which brings up another interesting action: guts's refusal to keep zodd's sword. was it that he thought the sword (will) was too strong? Unlikely. Was it because he did not want the sword (will) of a monster, which is to say not a human sword (will)? Perhaps. But now I'm off track. Every time gut's sword is broken he gets a stronger, larger sword, which represents a stronger, greater will. But as I stated earlier the breaking of his swords never really corresponds with a breaking of his will. What is more likely is that his swords were not strong enough for him. And so every time his sword could not match his will he got a sword that could. Of course, this goes to THE sword. The sword so great no other man may wield it, the sword so great it cannot be broken (as far as we know): The dragon slayer. The eclipse did break guts in a way, but it also gave fuel to his will, it gave him a purpose strong and destructive (not only to his enemies), revenge. After this infusion of will even the strongest of swords could not withstand his will, it was then that he acquired a sword that matched his will. Think of the swords name... dragon slayer. Swords are usually made to kill other humans, indeed the sword Godo gave guts after the eclipse was made for that purpose, but broke. But the dragon slayer is different, it is meant to kill dragons. This means that by guts wielding it he has a will that can kill dragons. And he does, he kills many dragons, in the form of apostles. Remember the scene right after guts kills his first apostle with the dragon slayer. Remember the line that dragons are only dragons because man can't kill them, then the question of what someone is if they are a dragonslayer. Well, unless miura is pulling wool over our eyes, if man can't kill dragons, and if guts kills dragons, is guts a man? I say yes, absolutely. But he has also transcended the will of man, his will is now superhuman. He may now be ubermench. It is either that or man is enately capable of killing dragons. But when it comes to guts it's hard to say. He certainly seems superhuman, but is human. There have been so many instances in which guts should have died that might make one think that he is not human, but then that sort of goes against the point of guts's character, which is to be human and dify the odds, which brings us into the realm of causality. Does guts always survive because he has to, because he has been ordained to? Or does he have full control over his fate? Whatever the case may be the story of guts is the story of the will of man. Ultimately he and we dont know if we are in full control or are guided by causality, or even both (the philosophical implications of which are quite complex). I have a feeling that if berserk ends this question will not be answerd. It will be up to the readers to decide and discuss, as it is in life.
Another great manga/anime (that imo, reminded me of beserk due to similar themes and gory, horrific artstyle) is...Trigun. Vash and his brother Knives aren't exactly human though, but Vash feels responsible as well as immense guilt for the death of Rem and that city he unwillingly detonated... death surrounds him, often portrayed merged with twisted manifestations of people's deaths that he caused, and knives welcomes it. He blames himself, and tends to hold onto the belief that everyone's fate is a blank canvas.. so he keeps going against his seeming fate of being a doomsday device by being a believer in "love and peace" and trying not kill anyone including his enemies. This theme is similar to beserks, yet on the opposite side of the same coin. Trigun is also very old, so I can't remember it all, but vash like guts, is heavily scarred and traumatised and seems to welcome his demise
Watching this video makes me more understand of how deep and complicated yet beautiful the story is. I really thankful for AlexEnterprises1 to make me understand and make me want to read the manga from the start again. Thanks.
I see Guts as a metaphor for mankinds eternal struggle against causality. We fight so hard against it and we tell ourselves we have free will, and sometimes it seems like we are overcoming the causality of nature with our willpower, our intelligence, our technology etc. We are clearly different from other animals but at the end of the day down to the psychological level our brains are still subject to the same laws of nature and our decisions are still part of causality. Guts also seems to be a metaphor for the struggle of man to find meaning as you said in the video. Looking at the world in a purely scientific way though life has no objective meaning and humans have no free will. But psychologically we need to think there is meaning and free will in order to function. This was Nietzsche's dilemma and unsurprisingly Nietzschean themes are all over Berserk, he was even directly quoted by Slan. There are also clear references to Carl Jung's ideas. Like Gut's beast of Darkness is like the Jungian Shadow, our unconscious mind, and our suppressed desires. The more Guts tried to suppress the beast the more it grows within him. Gut's embodies the struggle of man in many ways. Skull Knight even says that himself. This is really a great work of psychology based on Nietzschean and Jungian themes. That's how I interpret it anyway. We still don't know how it will end though or the ultimate point Miura is trying to make.
Absolutely amazing. I never realized the parallels between Guts and Casca giving up yet they still move forward to survive as themselves for another day. So serene and mystical. It’s amazing. Thanks for this great video
If there’s one thing Guts taught me is that no matter what dark place your in, you to can find the will and heart to push forward no matter how hard when shit hits the fan and still have that drive to find a purpose..... There is a way for all of us.
Holy hell- that medicine moment is so damn touching. Remembering a bittersweet memory from reality of things- except Casca's love is real- but conflicted. It's nigh a moment when you see such passion and beauty of art in Manga- and this is why Berserk still stands among my top always twinkling in and out of my #1 as I constantly re organize and jumble different old and new things I grow to like.

Oh my god when you recapped what happened between Casca and Guts and how Guts left himself vulnerable to her by telling her about Gambino I’m legit almost crying. Soon we’ll have Casca back and Guts and her will finally fucking talk April 27th couldn’t come soon enough. Casca is obvi going to take awhile to get over her trauma but it’ll be good for both of them. Also, if Guts was able to keep on living and handle the eclipse in his own way I’m sure Casca will be able to she’s almost as strong as Guts, she lead the band when no one else will she has the willpower now we just need to see her team up with Guts and the squad and fuck of Griffith let’s fucking see itttttttttttg
From reading Berserk since 2006, the themes of fighting against causality and pre-destiny is a central aspect of the series. In the lost chapter (083. "God of the Abyss (2)" which was pulled from Volume 13), the idea of evil was introduced. The idea of evil is essentially dictating causality in the Berserk universe. With the astral and physical planes now merged together (shown at the end of the Falcon of the millennium empire arc), the idea of evil and its agents the God hand now have more influence than previously. However, I'm in the camp that the merging of the worlds will ultimately lead to the downfall of the idea of evil and the God hand since it will be easier for a being to cause harm. It wouldn't be surprising to see Guts and Griffith team up at the end if the series and finally bring down the idea of evil and God hand. Thus restoring order to the world and allowing people to create their own destiny without an outside being exerting its influence.

@@crikeycrikeys9699 I think what he means is anything that would be considered Guts' sword. any large blade that he would ever know to wield when spent most of his life wielding such weapons. anything of such mass to protect him from what he fears or to ever push him through obstacles to triumph. To sacrifice being able to touch or carry such a thing again as its so much apart of him.
Interesting pronounciation of Guts. Sounds almost like Götz, an actual medieval German name. And I read the name was meant to be cool and somewhat German sounding. Though supposedly any similarities with a famous badass one-armed mercenary captain named Götz are purely coincidental.
I know I'm finding this late. But lately I've been revisiting this series through YT fan analysis, and I'll say the work put into breaking this series down is much needed. Not only that it is GREAT! It's amazing how much people are finding in this groundbreaking series. This adds on to many things I've thought about the series. The parallels, philosophical views found make for great conversation to be had for many many years to come. I've heard of "existentialism" but was never quite clear on what it meant. But when you hear it so much you begin to understand it somewhat. But those who wrote on it, the philosophers of the past, takes much examination. This is why the Skull Knight always refers to Guts as the "struggler". The concept of having the "WILL TO SURIVE". And by doing so he is defying what would've been. By changing one's own FATE.
When you realise this is a story about two people following someone else’s dream but accidentally finding their own dream, both for what they want and in each other. Eventually it will be blown away but they are blissful for this moment in witch they exist. All before before darkness strikes. Beautiful.
As many times as I’ve read Berserk never saw the parallels between his foster parents and Guts and Casca. This series has so many layers and has meant so many different things to me over the years. Great video my dude. 🤘
Not his character but his situations definitely. Unlike Gambino, Guts actually tries to mature and be a better person focused on the beneficiality of survival rather than only procuring angst against it. Gambino shuns away Shisu but Guts goes on this entire journey of purpose to restore Casca's mind and agency back. That is the point of Berserk. Moving away from tragedy and trauma, overcoming it and trying to survive for the better and more rewarding facets of life (love) even when the odds are stacked against you.
9:43 I know I'm not the first to point this out but on the last page of Vol. 9. When Guts refers to the medicine he rubbed into his wound, Miura alludes to Casca as that medicine to Guts now! In fact, if you analyze the last panel, you will notice that Casca's head has "covered up" the nose scar inflicted by Gambino. Deftly done by the author!!!
Edward Gaines actually the symbolism in that page signifies that casca has become Gut's sword. Casca always wanted to be griffith's sword and as guts said that a sword must be by it's master's side. But instead of griffith's she became his.
Griffith know Guts are very independent minded which show in when Guts always reject the offer from Griffith to join the Band of the Hawk until very last, this mean by definition Guts who don't have dream but yet not depend on other people dream = Griffith's friend.
How I think berserk will end, is Guts, now with a ruined body due to constant use of the berserker armor, living a half decent life with Casca as his wife, thinking "this isn't so bad after all" . And finally, we'll be shown their son, who they'll have named after Griffith. This is what Griffith saw in his vision, when he's shown being taken care of by Casca as his wife with a son named guts. But the reason it will be guts who experiences this fate is because he will become the human Griffith abandoned to become Femto
I just realized that Guts is the Japanese Darth Vader Think about it Clad in all black armor Angry all the time Lost his true love lost limbs Hatred for his once best friend He's Darth Vader
Thank you!!! I honestly understand the story now. Watching the anime confused me and left me with so many questions. So I just decided to read the manga to get a deeper understanding and to enjoy the story of Berserk.
Guts didn't destroy Griffith's dream by cutting his sword in half, rather his confidence/ego/self-concept. It was a symbolic moment wherein Griffith realized that he was no longer as untouchable as he was, that someone else could have easily killed him. It reminded him of his mortality and hence made him question whether he really is the "destined" one as he thought he was. Also, that his dream was not as important to others as he had always believed, that he was no longer the center of the universe. For once, he understood how Guts and others have been feeling and, unable to cope with that fact, ventured down a path of self-destruction.
Wow. Fantastic video man, really well done. Seeing your video really makes me want to read berserk in it's entirety. As I've only watched the 1997 anime and continued reading the manga where the anime left off .
The craziest thing about berserk and how detailed it is, guts always had his armor on his left hand protecting it. This being the arm he lost in the eclipse, it’s crazy to see even what we try hardest to protect can all be taken away by fate and one’s desire.
I always looked at Guts' sword in this way: When he was a small boy, a normal sized sword was given to him to fight with, obviously the sword is much larger than he was due to his size and no one believed it was a fair fight, and basically all of the guys presumed he'd lose... So I feel like by Guts having a sword much larger than him his whole life, with people still questioning his ability to wield it, gives Guts this almost satisfaction that he's proving everyone wrong and that he is able to do what everyone believes he cannot. It makes him feel like he has power in a world where that was taken away from him at a young age.

An excellent discussion point but I think it's just a symbolic penis
I entirely feel wrong for that troll comment.
Ain't nobody gonna read that
Another great manga/anime (that imo, reminded me of beserk due to similar themes and gory, horrific artstyle) is...Trigun. Trigun is also very old, so I can't remember it all, but vash like guts, is heavily scarred and traumatised and seems to welcome his demise
i read the whole damn comment, and it enlightens me.
Breserk taught me that there is more to life than socity's defention of success, whether it be money, relationships, and status.
Watching this video makes me more understand of how deep and complicated yet beautiful the story is. I really thankful for AlexEnterprises1 to make me understand and make me want to read the manga from the start again. Thanks.
"And Guts is thrown into the adult world"
Ahh, I remember taking my first arrow to the back whilst riding :)!
Woov; man this is first quality analysis. Are you a philosohy student. Your analysis make me understand ana admire Berserk more than before😊
Words cannot describe how this series has touched my heart. Kentaro, you were a genius. R.I.P.
Absolutely amazing. I never realized the parallels between Guts and Casca giving up yet they still move forward to survive as themselves for another day.
So serene and mystical. It’s amazing.
Thanks for this great video
That was great. It's always reassuring to know that there is a strong following to this rich, dark, beautiful manga. What a great interpretation.
The murder of Adonis deserves mention, it's obvious that Guts realized something about the way he had lived his life to get to that point
This was such a beautiful analysis of the philosophy of Berserk. Thank you so much for this.
I saw the original, but I'm gonna watch the whole thing all over again, because you need money.
😂 true
I'll watch it all over again on my FREE Anime, Cartoon and Movie Website on phone. Then I'll laugh at all of you for either watching it again or for the first time for this TH-camr, or for you cowards who never considered looking for a better website LOL have a Blessed n Wonderful Day
I love Berserk so much. Such an inspirational tale about a man struggling against terrible circumstances, hardships, his own fate. Whenever I am having a hard time, I think about Gut's never ending struggle to achieve his goal.
Beautiful Alex! Man I love that you do this! I didn’t even think about the similarity between gambino/shizu/guts and guts/casca/demon baby! I agree with your idea for the fitted ending and hope for the same! Thank you again for such well thought content! Loving it man
You just blow my mind. Wow even having read the story's of berserk you just made a whole new perspective for me to view it as. Good work
One of the best videos I’ve seen, I like seeing videos like this to show how passionate people are about berserk
Now that Miura is gone I searched for berserk videos. I'm happy to have found this channel. The videos are so good, they capture profound themes in berserk and put them in understandable terms. Great job!
This is a wonderful video, i always love finding people with as much passion for berserk as myself. Look forward to seeing more in the future :)
I've been meaning to watch this video, thanks for re-uploading
If this does not bring out more fans of berserk i dont know what will. Thank you for this Alex
Berserk has the best character development EVER!...Or at least as far as I know.
Are you the Shadow?
Try and read Vagabond or Vinland saga
Guts and Shimon are the best in term of character development.
@@hentaiprotagonist729 I keep running across these two manga everytime I watch Berserk. I seriously need to check them out.
Try monster, berserk is my favorite but monster has the best character development I’ve ever seen
Never thought of that, but that would be incredible if they did.. if there was one molecule left of humanity in Griffith.
Berserk has to be the greatest manga of all time pretty sure
How come i didn't saw the original upload, sorry to know that you deleted your video.
But god damn you have some narrative skills my friend i could feel the emotions coming from the video, i shed a tear in the scene were Guts remembered the awful things Gambino made, while Casca tries to comfort him.
Props to you man this is an a awesome video.
Thank you Ansel, I'm afraid I can only conclude that TH-cam (as they so often do) didn't place the video into your subscription box. Thank you again man, it means a lot to me, especially from my long-time subs. That last sequence was very tough to read out with a straight voice and I'm so happy to hear that it touched you. Thank you again, it means a lot.
Yeah that's probably the reason sigh, you have talent man keep going and thanks to you for this great content :D
Great video, man, absolutely loved it. It was refreshing to watch a serious video of this kind, without a bunch of goofy quips or bad jokes shoehorned in, kept serious in tone. Really great analysis and insight, well thought out and put together. Keep up the good work! Subscribed.
I just now realized Guts’ eyes symbolize the Yin Yang, one sees light and the other dark
why do you sound exactly like super eyepatch wolf
and you both make videos about berserk
and you both use the word existentialism all the time
you’re not fooling anyone eyepatch
Also extremely high video quality.
Not only is he SAW but he's also Aleczandxr, they even have 'Alex' in their names. I'm on to you xd
He sounds nothing like eye patch stop capping
Lol he doesnt sound irish at all
Damn beautiful video. I rly liked parallel between shizu and gambino and casca and guts. I never realized that one. Great job!
when caska is un patotoed you should do a video analysis on that. it would make me appreciate it more as this video has.
Manly tears... this was amazing mate. You told the beauty and majesty of Berserk brilliantly.
What if Guts sacrificed his sword? Would the God Hand accept that? It's clearly the most important thing in his life whether he knows it or not
Problem is he can get a new one...
Lol
@@crikeycrikeys9699 I think what he means is anything that would be considered Guts' sword. any large blade that he would ever know to wield when spent most of his life wielding such weapons. anything of such mass to protect him from what he fears or to ever push him through obstacles to triumph. To sacrifice being able to touch or carry such a thing again as its so much apart of him.
so not the physical Sword. but the Sword in essence of what Guts would use.
Sacrificing his sword is giving up on his will to live and means suicide.
You're ending monologue and song gave me a wave of chills!
I hope it all goes well with the other Videos. I would like to watch them.
Interesting pronounciation of Guts. Sounds almost like Götz, an actual medieval German name. And I read the name was meant to be cool and somewhat German sounding.
Though supposedly any similarities with a famous badass one-armed mercenary captain named Götz are purely coincidental.
Yora guts also looks like a mix between german and irish
Dude had an iron hand prosthetic too
@@Miuranger1 lol he doesnt. Guts looks japanese to me
Make more on berserk please, your vids are actually good
Definitely one of the most beautiful and amazing videos I've see on TH-cam. Thank you for making this.
Thank you too!
Wow. I love this video. I'd never thought about how Shizu and Gambino paralleled Guts and Casca post-eclipse before watching this video
Great job man, thanks for sharing
Amazingly made video! Jeez this story is real something huh!
Crazy that I never realized Guts ended up just like Gambino.
Wow, this is a beautiful video that truly plunges the philosophical depths of Berserk. Thankyou for this!!!
Your voice fits the situation in this story! And using the first anima music was an awesome idea. It’s way better then the other ones.
@@teemdynasty8929 Whoa! Casca *IS* Guts' sword?! Never considered that, thanks! (In fact, Casca does seem to "shine dimly.")
Griffith know Guts are very independent minded which show in when Guts always reject the offer from Griffith to join the Band of the Hawk until very last, this mean by definition Guts who don't have dream but yet not depend on other people dream = Griffith's friend.
A respect for strength and strong will.
wow man u narrated the shit out of this one, beautiful and touching. Thanks
Sorry your video got tooken down :/ I'm glad you re-uploaded it tho :b
Shame about your video man, I actually subbed because of it. Just keep on keepin on brother.
This video was done so well, I had to watch it twice in a row. Great job man.
Thank you C K, Im glad you enjoyed :D
Wow you explained it perfectly I’m a big berserk fan and I didn’t realize that he was gambino thank you for your hard work
this was so well done. Berserk is the greatest story i have ever come across and it has the coolest fanbase as well.
Kick-ass job man I been following berserk for about 18 years and you hit it on the spot with your analysis
Your video is so beautifully written and well done I'm thankful for that
Its been 6 years and i always comeback to this video
I think this is the only story that has made me feel emotional pain for the suffering these characters had to endure.
Such an awesome video. Thanks for making this
You have worded every thing so perfectly man ,great job ,made me see things diffently in the hole story.
Such an amazing video! I love love love this!
Great vid
Holy smokes. Well done, brother. Changed the anime for me in the best of ways. ❤️
Amazing video btw
I just realized that Guts is the Japanese Darth Vader
Think about it
Clad in all black armor
Angry all the time
Lost his true love
lost limbs
Hatred for his once best friend
He's Darth Vader
Very informative please make more content this was truly a delight
Damn, I'm actually surprised. I enjoyed your reaction videos but I'd adore to see more of this sort of stuff from you!
That was beautiful. Great job.
The craziest thing about berserk and how detailed it is, guts always had his armor on his left hand protecting it. This being the arm he lost in the eclipse, it’s crazy to see even what we try hardest to protect can all be taken away by fate and one’s desire.
Amazing man, i love your Berserk videos ❤️
Wow I never even thought about the guts and casca/gambino and shisu comparison great catch
Using the music from the series was a GREAT addition. 😊
What is the list of songs used?
Fantastic job by the way, Alex
He uses the berserk 1997 anime soundtrack at times.
Sister's story - Susumu Hirasawa, the first one
3:19 Des Liens Solides- Berserk Golden Age Arc the berserk sound track never disappoints😓😓😭
Thank you. I was looking for this.
Thank you for making this video ♥️
This is beautiful. Great analysis and video.
i´ve watched your videos before (the reaction ones), but this made hit the sub button at once, keep up the good work
I always looked at Guts' sword in this way: When he was a small boy, a normal sized sword was given to him to fight with, obviously the sword is much larger than he was due to his size and no one believed it was a fair fight, and basically all of the guys presumed he'd lose...
