human value, relationships with the opposite sex, positive Egoism, why people have kids, honesty, white nationals storming the capitol, why I went gluten free, and probably some other stuff.

Dina, don't confuse selfishness with love. The difference is that the benefit of selfishness is only one directional. Selfishness only benefits oneself. Love operates in multiple directions. So it does not just benefit oneself, it also benefits others. Love requires self benefit. It is not selfish to benefit oneself. You cannot benefit others without benefitting yourself. It is only selfish when your self benefit hurts others. Benefiting yourself and others is love. Benefiting yourself while hurting others is selfishness.

I feel like I’ve had this discussion so many times, and having it with different people has always brought new approaches to the table. Very interesting stuff 🥸

    • @mnfsk2156

you've said it yourself. 'love requires self-benefit' therefore the stem of love is selfishness. in order to give, we must take... taking is literary the first thing we do in life... even before we are born in our mother's womb... so it is inherent to take... to give, however, that is, in and of it self, called selflessness... because we don't necessarily have to, yet we do
what am tryna say is that love born from selflessness is another form of selfishness... everything in life really... we coexist in a world wherein you have what I need. and I have what you need, and for us to live in harmony there must be successful giving and taking, but how can we have the ability to give when we have nothing? that is why we always take first before we give, and it doesn't necessarily mean only from each other as we can take from the earth's seemingly infinite sources like plants and animals, or even from ourselves, like how a women breastfeed a baby that is not her child
btw selfishness isn't necessarily defined as " Benefiting yourself while hurting others". while that is true. we can still help others to selfishly reach an ultimate goal like the breastfeeding example. it's not contradictory
thank you for writing this thought-provoking comment. have a good one

@@mnfsk2156 Taking is not selfish. Self-care is not selfish. Society programs us to think this way. This "pick yourself up by your own bootstraps," "self made man," "I did it all on my own" mentality is a lie pushed onto us by our hyper capitalist society. We do not have a choice to take or not. We must take. If we do not take we die. Receiving help, taking, is literally what life is. Receiving is as much an act of love as giving. Capitalism presents this lie that independence is ultimate success. But there is no success without taking. The truth is that we are all interdependent. We all depend on each other. Our lives depend on our interdependence. The more independent we become the more we suffer. Life is interdependence, radical interdependence. Understanding this truth is what love is.

@@theblackponderer hmmmm, I think we’re actually on the same boat here. It’s just that you don’t like the word selfish huh? Since the second half of your reply goes hand in hand with what I’ve said, I guess it’s just the choice and use of terminology now that is setting us apart
      Is it though my friend?

    • @theblackponderer
      @theblackponderer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@mnfsk2156 Well, the word "selfish" implies a disregard for the other, a lack of consideration for other people. But a lack of consideration for others is not the stem of love. At the root of love is a consideration for someone else. But taking for oneself does not necessarily imply a disregard for others. You can take from someone while caring for them too. The very act of taking can be caring. This is not the same thing as selfishness.

I love when she puts out one of these videos. It’s good to sit back and just ask the simple question “why...” every now and then. Too many decades have gone by and we’ve just accepted what we’re told for facts. Asking questions are not us rebelling against people it’s simple trying to understand deeper why we do what we do.

I’m the exact same way with music. Always feels better once I dance lol I think it’s natural to do things for other people in order to make yourself feel good, just like you did for your mom. I also think it’s ok to be selfish as long as you help other people as well. Being selfish and doing something for yourself doesn’t have to be a negative. Even though you may feel like you are making these videos (what makes me happy, beliefs that brainwashed me, etc.) for selfish reasons of wanting to feel better, they are still helping other people come to grips with their own feelings as well. So i believe it’s possible to be both selfish and helpful. Being selfish has such a negative connotation, but sometimes you need to look out for yourself.

You are beautiful and so talented, I really can’t wait until I see you on tv again because you have a life long fan here in Miami. Forget college degrees, I got one and it literally is just a piece of paper. It brought no happiness. Do what makes you happy and ONLY what makes you happy.

Its good to see that you're doing alright after this shitshow of a year, specially after hearing the "not gonna lose my marballs for gluten" part. Related to that, i think i've developed a more pessimistic sight about myself. Like even if this shit gets me more mentally ill, who cares? I don't really have this drive to change things in my life anymore, at least not the way it was in 2019, which wasn't perfect either. So i'm glad to see someone still having hope in a silver lining at least for themselves and their mental health every once in a while. This reminds me of my conversations with my grandpa (who's very much been my father figure). I didn't want to finish school either, but he gave me that same speech. I didn't buy it either. Instead I found other reasons to continue and now I can say I have a college degree. Throughout that time, I thought (in my head and aloud) about a lot of the things you expressed in this video, like I used to existential dread the shit out of my days and nights. At some point you just have to accept that there are some things you'll never be able to change about the world and decide what you believe in. Some day someone might come along and say something that makes you question those beliefs again. It's okay to be wrong, as long as you try your best to correct that error. I'm glad you shared this because it shows just how much we, as people, have in common even if we don't agree on everything :)

personally speaking, the acts I do to help people or alleviate others, I do it purely without any expectations at all. Whether I get bashed for it, or whether I get praised for it, it doesn't hit me at all. The reason I do it is because of the foresight (based on experience) of how bad a situation can get for so and so person/people etc. And like your dad said, there are some selfish aspects of us being humans, its inherent, but equating selfishness = something bad doesn't *always* have to be true. I personally feel it boils down to experience I guess. I can be completely off about this lmao but yeah, it's nice to exchange thoughts.

I've been in that place, making those philosophical question when I was just starting college and it does feel good to just think about it and try to piece it all together, with friends.. Like, sure we are all self-driven, but as you said in the beginning we are also "designed" by the society that surounds us. Even when we think we are pleasing ourselves by doing something we want that very pleasure was something we learned to feel. Anyway, I've graduated in history, and had some philosophy and social science classes along the way (now I'm studying linguistics as second grad) and had the opportunity to study a bunch of thinkers who'd thought and written about it all... and it sucks (although it has its merits).. Having "all" the possible "valid" answers just "given" kinda limits the possibility of thinking about the subject "freely". I digress...
    Keep that train running =)

You’re not alone in these things affecting you, I spiral so often because I panic that no one else seems to notice these things around me. Everyone just seems to live without reeeaaally thinking about it

A society with less or no feelings is also without compassion, solidarity or charity.
Also: Gluten is not the enemy. 😝

I have the same conversation with my mother about sense of self vs us. Then there was people storming capitol, which I can relate with storming the kitchen. A difference being one setting being ok and the other not.

GIIIRL I'm so glad I'm not the only one who's thought about this! I just wish I could've join on the conversation in the kitchen honestly 😂 I agree 100% with you, and I'll even add that when I started thinking like this it BROKE my world, because I realised that even the most 'selfless' people are actually as selfish as anybody can be, since we all do it to make ourselves feel better.
BUT I agree with your father about the fact that it doesn't have to be a negative thing. It can be positive when it benefits both parties (or more). Like you said, it's just our we're made. I really can't imagine a being that is not profoundly selfish. Isn't it what consciousness and life and even death is all about?
    Okay I'm done now 😅
