Plant Sounds

  • An interactive sound installation sourced from a plant.
    The plant's "state" is represented through sound, primarily frequency. The plant responds to changes in its environment such as humidity, temperature, light, and touch. The micro-voltage fluctuations of the plant are detected by Ag/AgCl electrodes. The voltage is amplified and sent into an Arduino to be digitized. The numeric values are sent to oscillators, resulting in the soundscape.
    Btw, I make other COMPLETELY unrelated videos on this channel

    Thanks for your interest ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
    *F.A.Q.*
    *Can you help me build this?*
    Unfortunately, no. I've long since abandoned this project! The best I can offer you is this crude documentation I kept and my best wishes.
    residencyproject.blogspot.com/2015/04/
    *Did you do other things to the plant (water, cut, light on fire, say nice things, kiss it, etc.)?*
    I didn't do extensive tests. HOWEVER, we did notice that during sunset, the frequency would drop rapidly, then during sunrise it would raise rapidly. Also, when watering, the frequency would raise rapidly and peak within an hour or so. As the plant would become dehydrated, the frequency slowly dropped (over the course of several days).
    *Does this prove plants feel, think, hear, etc.?*
    ... Maybe?
    Things like feeling are very human notions and plants aren't human. Without concrete evidence to suggest they feel... well, it's not very prudent to apply human qualities to them. Plants react to their environment, this much is sure. But we already knew that.
    *Will you try this on other plants?*
    Not anytime soon. Maybe down the road I'll revisit the schematics and rebuild the project. If I do that, I would create a how-to so other people can do their own studies.
    *Other note*
    This is a "sonification" of a plant in a circuit. There are artistic liberties in choosing how to sonify the data. I've chosen Hertz and amplitude. In order to gather the most authentic electrical data from a plant, I think you would need highly sensitive interstitial probes capable of reading extremely small voltages, a Faraday cage, and probably other things that I have no idea because I'm not a scientist.

    This plant has been recorded inside of a superficial and enclosed area (indoor?) and making these sounds results ... I wonder how the sounds results would be if the plant was record outdoor in a middle of a forest for example ?... it would be interesting to discover another variations of sounds that the plant would emit. Thanks for this video!

    • @tomutomu
      @tomutomu  7 ปีที่แล้ว +62

      You're right, there is definitely a correspondence between the sound and the setting of the plant. While we have never tried outdoors, we did have the exhibit in a windowed, sunny room. When the sun began to set, there was a marked difference in the information we received from the plant. The frequency dropped rapidly as it became darker. So, I imagine the effects would be much more intense if in an outdoor setting. Thanks for the interest!

      Then you can do your own experiment. Listen very intently and pay attention to your plants, naturally it's very subtle to pick up on but perhaps you can hear them and maybe even what they're feeling. The same way a mother knows what her baby wants by it's cry. Let loose of all other things, and prioritize that one moment to just *listen*, just pure devotion, nothing else. It takes a certain amount of awareness to do this. If a cow or worm can do it, so should you - or else we have evolved through so much time life has put into us to be called the "ultimate lifeforms" on this planet all for naught.

    I have to say, the plant is used as grounding for single wire signal transmission. lots things (both insulators and conductors, better crystalline than non crystalline structured) are good single wire signal/energy transmitter including vacuum in the universe/space. When human touch it, the grounding effect accumulate, which may increase the signal and make the gadget sounding more aloud.
    I was wondering have you eliminated the grounding effect possibility to present plant's own signal effect significantly?

    Yo, this leaf is just acoustically vibrating due to contact with things around it. It's such a small sound we cant hear it but our sensors can. Imagine a guitar string, when he puts his hand on the leaf it makes a different frequency noise due to different wavelengths of vibrations from the tension. It changes from humidity due to density of the air around it. It changes from temp. for the same reason, and I'm sure light affects the way particles react on that small of a scale to be able affect the noise as well.

    • @tomutomu
      @tomutomu  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sorry mate, I think you've confused this with contact microphones. Ag/AgCl electrodes are used for ~electrical~ measurement. An acoustically vibrating leaf (whatever the hell that is) would have almost no impact on the information being received from the electrode.
