+César Chaussinand These days SUV's dominate many markets and often have 20" wheels so they won't look ridiculously disproportionate. The big wheels actual give an inferior ride in some circumstances because they are heavier. So, 13, 14 and 15" wheels seem small in comparison with the 17 and 18" wheels even with with low profile rubber. In the 70"s and 80's 12,, 13, and 14" wheels were very common for small medium and large cars. Of course, small wheels such as 12 & 13" fall into pot holes easier. Smaller tyre & wheel combos on hill climbs heat up quicker. Big wheels/tyres may not fit under their guards. Running big wheels and tyres may increase the ride height, centre of gravity, body roll and adversely effect handling. Many of the production cars in hill climbs were designed in the 80"and 90's when standard wheel sizes were 13 to 15". They also steer quicker with smaller wheels/tyres as they don't have as big gyroscopic effect as bigger wheels. Then there is the gearing effect where smaller wheels increase acceleration but reduce top speed which is important for quick times on a hill climb with production based vehicles. The choice of wheel tyre combinations is also effected by the availability of racing rubber. Production classes and modified production classes are governed by rules which may restrict wheel and tyre sizes. So there are many reasons why many of the cars may run relatively small wheels.
