@green fox why is that? And dont say the repetitive harmonic minor and sweep arpeggios, because he was the first to use it as such in the 80s, it only became repetitive after everyone started doing it.
@green fox You the type of guy that thinks that bending one string for 2 hours and make faces is great guitar playing right? Ritchie was good but malmsteen took it to another level, to the point where all virtuosos from today had malmsteen has influence.
green fox Most of Yngwie’s early stuff was interestingly composed. After the 90’s he really became hard to listen to, I’ll give you that, but trying to say Blackmore did it already just isn’t true. I listened to Ritchie before getting into Yngwie and they’re are not similar in any way. Yngwie used sweep arpeggios, diminished, melodic, and harmonic minor scales. Ritchie didn’t. He played painful pentatonic licks and had shit accuracy. Ritchie is embarrassingly bad with the exception of maybe two solos. He’s like the Carlos Santana of metal lol.
@green fox Is the modern Mozart of Y j Malmsteen a clone of: the boredom of the blackmore tortoise, the one that makes soda factory noises with the lever? ha ha ha ha ha ha. Operate your ears, if you have ears to operate ^^ You have never swept more than two strings or extensive triads around the neck of the guitar. He plays pure pentatonics that are heard like the noise of airplane turbines, because he tries to run fast and the sound does not come out a bit clean. Turtle blackmore boredom, is a guitarist who performs solos with only three fingers of his left hand and is a guitarist for deaf and mediocre like you. Yngwie J. Malmsteen is a clone of: Mozart, Bach, Bethoveen, and Vivaldi, the gods of instrument playing and music.
A great man and player,he is not arrogant as the haters and jealous people say,hes just confident and has worked really hard and as for his playing he is the greatest shred guitar player ever and plays with a lot of emotion
+Mr Ree Mann I picture you ... alone in the TV room, pretty late, giving a slow but deliberate standing ovation with just the tiniest bit of a moist twinkle in the corner of your eye.
Marching Out is my favorite album - Jeff Scott Soto had a great voice and the riffs were top drawer... Good luck to YJM - he's a true rock star in my book
Yes, Marching Our is my favorite as well. That's the one I tell those that haven't heard Yng to check put first. Great songs, great riffs and playing, great guitar tone, mix not drowned in reverb plus Jeff Scott Soto, my favorite singer of Yng's.
Say what you like about Yngwie, but that bloke has never sold out. Refused to change his playing style or his clothes since the mid-80s and clearly gives zero fucks as to what people think.
Is that why he does so many covers of other artists and the same boring scales are repeated over and over in his own songs? Songs like Arpeggios from Hell are literally just repeats of scale run arpeggios.
i saw them at about 16 at the salt palace in slc in a small room. later in about 2005 i took my musical sons, about 12 and 14 to a small place in denver at the guitar gods show. i cried, they went next door to see another show. now they understand the power of yngwie
I saw Yngnwie back in the late 80's in bham England but got the impression he couldn't really be arsed to play well..it was a little club and he made a 1000 mistakes but Im still a big fan, ego aside he changed rock guitaring and raised the bar....I think he's world class rock guitarist and worth listening to, esp if youre a player or want to be a player, he'll inspire you Im sure, he did me :)
He's still in the coma. While dreaming, he's the greatest player in the corner. When he wakes up and realizes that he's stuck on certain particular scales and does the same runs and riffs in so many songs, he's going to be sorely disappointed.
Love him or hate him he will still be remembered as a guitar virtuoso, I've seen him live a few times and I'll admit his playing has got steadily lazy as his belt gets bigger.... But stick on rising force and it is a quality album.
Saw Malmsteen back in the early 90's always liked the music even though its shred all the way through rising force it reminded me of a soundtrack for a horror movie but the guitar shredding is top notch.
Yngwie was cloned ! There are 3 of them. The original pre car wreck, the fat one after wreck, and the current one based of the original. They can all shred. They should do a G3 with just the 3 clones! That would be awesome. Jk, he is kind of an egomaniac but I like him anyway and he is a super hard worker.
Years ago, in Sedona AZ .... we were in some place and they had pictures of guitarr legends. At one point, I was walking out of a restroom and this guy pointed to this picture "Who is this guy?" I quickly said "THAT ... is Yngwie J. Malmsteen". And of course I heard "Wwut? " ....... LOL !!!!
Wow, people that say its just "playing fast" really have no musical knowledge do you? Eric Clapped-out is massively overrated. And Yngwie is actually a musical genius. His knowledge is crazy. You only feel bad about him because you don't have the same level of music theory, and that's fine, just dont pretend that Eric Clapton is a more gifted, more competent guitarist than Yngwie because that is quite obviously not true. I doubt Eric Clapton even knows what an arpeggio is.
Yeah ,Clapton is great on guitar .Yngwie is using VIOLIN TECHNIQUE on guitar ,so he cannot even BE compared to the British Invasion . Clapton is a good songwriter ,a good singer and a good blues player ,what i'm saying is ,he ain't no Dickey Betts !
Playing fast helps cover mistakes. Playing slow leaves you vulnerable to having your mistakes out in the open. Just like a magician's hands are quicker than the eye.
Saw him open for AC/DC I think, Flick of the Switch tour. All those concerts from the 80's kinda blend together over time but I saw him in Springfield IL.
Personally for me, I feel the greatest guitarists to ever touch a guitar is Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, Joe Satriani, and Yngwie Malmsteen.
I dont really know how to explain this, but my ex-girlfriend kind of looked like a (substantially sexier) girl version of yngwie. She even favoured the same big sunglasses because of that slightly chubby round face. At times it would get distracting to the point of being slightly disturbing. Obviously I never told her altho im sure she'd have no idea who he is anyways (she had the ego to match but couldnt play guitar worth shit). Needed to get that off my chest. what better place than the tube.
Her name wasn't Alexandra was it? Years ago I had a date lined up with a girl I met online. She looked quite sexy but when I asked for more pictures I realised she bore an uncanny resemblance to Yngwie. I literally cancelled the date for that sole reason. I just couldn't stop thinking about Malmsteen.
He was in my dreams ringing all the time until you hear mestreated inspiration disk was crazy, that dream was buzzing my ears and my hairs stood listening and excited as an impossible for me, it's him, the sum of the greats. Pagganin + Blackmore = Ynwgie Malmsteen
3:30 "His groundbreaking technique..." (paired with footage of Yngwie eating his Fender.... er... playing with his teeth. Good showmanship, but not a good example of being groundbreaking, since that stunt is at least as old as Hendrix in the 60's)
Malmsteen was a true virtuoso and a guy who took what Blackmore and Roth dabbled in and ratcheted up the technique and dedication to it many times over. Let's give the man his due...he created a new breed of guitar players; those greatly steeped in classical influences -- arpeggios, harmonic minor and diminished scales, Phrygian dominant, etc. But...the guy couldn't write a fucking song to save his life, which is why virtually no one outside of the esoteric shredder guitar circles knows who he is. Blackmore could write a monster riff/song; Van Halen...early on, just absurdly gifted; Page...the greatest rock riff-master songwriter ever. But Malmsteen is arguably more technically talented/gifted that any of them. Who cares? Guitar players only...or wannabe guitar players. This point is illustrated by the comparison between Joe Satriani and Steve Vai. Back in the late 80's, Satriani was being played all over the radio as an INSTRUMENTALIST! Vai was not. Why? Because, aside from his prodigious chops, Satriani, at least back in the day, could really, really write; just amazingly memorable melodic riffs and hooks and lines; Vai has always been lacking in this department; he tends to be/get so "out there" that, again, as with Yngwie, only guitarist care. But I digress...
I agree with most of what you say, however i believe Yngwie is a much better songwriter than most people give him credit for. Songs like Dreaming, Save our Love, You Don't Remember I'll Never Forget, Bedroom Eyes etc... are well written songs with a lot of melody and nice chordal arrangements. Even his uptempo songs like Demon Driver, Riot in the Dungeon, Never Die, Faster Than the Speed of Light etc... have beautiful chord progressions. Plus he's written some of the greatest rock instrumentals of all time like Black Star, Far Beyond the Sun, Evil Eye, Brothers, Crying etc... To me that's what always separated Yngwie from the rest of the "shredders" is that he actually writes cool songs with catchy hooks and killer instrumentals. I think the fact that Yngwie has been around for a long time causes people to take him from granted and they forget how good he really is. Cheers
epic103 I agree that Yngwie is a far better songwriter than most folks give him credit for. He wrote great ballads that mixed power and emotion in a very nice way. You Don't Remember I'll Never Forget always sounds awesome to me no matter how many times I hear it, especially the version off of Live In Leningrad from 1989. I'll never get tired of listening to Live In Leningrad. Yngwie rules!!
I totally agree with EPIC 103 .Yngwie has written well over 200 songs ,and appeals to more than"Just Guitar aficionados ." What to me is strange is ,the "Guitar aficionados " seem to like ONLY the old era Yngwie ,from Alcatrazz to Fire and Ice . Or One album of his newer material . In that you know Yngwie is an amazing artist ,because he puts out an album every year ,and you can really see him grow and change be influenced and experiment with his songwriting
Yes guitarist care . And in ALL idioms ,because Classical musicians ,Jazz,Musicians ,and all types of rock and metal musicians buy his albums .Yngwie also is a tremendous songwriting talent in the Baroque classical influenced world of Melodic Power Metal that strives in Europe .Stratovarious,Jag Panzer,Laz Rocket,Johannson,Ring of Fire ,Rhapsody of Fire,Hammer Fall,Symphony X. It would be short sighted to view him only as an American Artist .UNLIKE his European counter parts ,Yngwie broke through in the U.S. Let me put it to you this way . Yngwie has a guaranteed record buying public ,and last YJM show I was at July 17 at Bergen PAC in Englewood NJ it looked like the packed house was REALLY into the music
2:07 She called the cops... he talks like an American that’s for sure xD Much love YJM you played the National Anthem after 911 in a foreign country, salud 🍻
he said "ok I know I'm not gonna win it." He was talking about being up for an award and how they announced his name wrong and he already knew he wouldn't win the award because they butchered his name.
I don't understand why people make a big deal about him being fat. Who gives a fuck. So let's forget about anyone who is overweight? That's kind of foolish. Live n let live. As if u put on an album n ur ears pick up their weight. Load of shit. N no I'm not fat. I'm big boned 🙃🙃😀
I saw Steeler then Alcatraz. I immediately heard Ritchie Blackmore & Uli Jon Roth. I thought it was hilarious to read his interviews at the time practically claiming he didn't know who they were. His best stuff was with Joe Lynn Turner. That band was his best.
You're making stuff up... Yngwie never implied he didn't know who Blackmore and Uli Jon Roth are. That's ridiculous! Yngwie has always praised Uli and Blackmore. Plus... it's common knowledge that the first record Yngwie got as a kid was Deep Purple's "Fireball." It had a huge impact on him. Yngwie has never denied being influenced by Uli and Blackmore. But with that said... Yngwie doesn't play Uli and Blackmore licks. Yngwie has his own distinct phrasing and approach. Yngwie plays like Yngwie.
I was there. He did dozens of interviews at the time. When he was accused of sounding & even moving onstage like Blackmore, he pretended that Blackmore was not a big influence. He'd go on about Paganini. Even though Yngwie has by now has just about every past member of Rainbow (even Blackmore's Night members) in his band that changed every few months. When I first saw him, I thought Blackmore. He even dresses like him. Yngwie is an incredible guitar player. I saw him with Joe Lynn Turner & that was Yngwie at his best. He did play over Joe's vocals. He actually slowed a bit & let his vibrato take over. I've been a Luthier since 1980, a touring Guitar/Amp/Effects tech from 1980 - 1996. I know what I'm talking about.
I never really liked this music. Sorry I don't know why. Never touched me. :/ But personally I see playing fast (when I do it) as more practice and mastering technique than actual feeling and emotion.
Checkout songs like Icarus Dream Suite, Overture 1383, Dreaming, Marching Out, Crying, Brothers just to name a few. You might change your opinion, because those songs are full of emotion.
epic103 I guess I'm biased of the fact that I accept incredible fast piano playing, yet when it comes to the electric guitar... I don't know why. Doesn't touch me as classic rock does, but everyone is different they're own way. It's weird like that I suppose. Since I love Rachmaninoff, yet not Malmsteen.
LinkBulletBill Fair enough... but how can Icarus Dream Suite, Brothers, Crying, and Overture 1383 not touch you? There is so much emotion and passion in those songs that it's ridiculous. You would think that if you like Rachmaninoff that you'd dig Yngwie? Btw... have seen Yngwie's Concerto concert? You might like it, it's 100% classical. Cheers
Love him , or hate him - you can't deny the fact that he's one of the most groundbreaking, unique musicians to ever pick up the instrument
hazor777 agree
@green fox why is that? And dont say the repetitive harmonic minor and sweep arpeggios, because he was the first to use it as such in the 80s, it only became repetitive after everyone started doing it.

Odyssey was my first Yngwie album. Still love the album.
Having him join the G3 Tour was a great idea!
Say what you like about Yngwie, but that bloke has never sold out. Refused to change his playing style or his clothes since the mid-80s and clearly gives zero fucks as to what people think.
yngwie is the god of tone and musical frasing and will forever be!

Hshshshsjjs
his stare is so empty at the end when he says he's happy. he even paused and had to think to find the right word.
He’s probably remembering all the bs he had to go through to get to where he is
"Yngwie was in a coma for a week."
Wow i never knew that. That's gotta be life-changing.
I'm not sure he's ever come out of it
He's still in the coma.
I don't think it's as much of getting lazy as much as maturing as a guitar player
You mean to tell me yngwie decrease his playing after the accident
Ya know he's still a beast now
Can't believe how good prime yngwie is
Saw Malmsteen back in the early 90's always liked the music even though its shred all the way through rising force it reminded me of a soundtrack for a horror movie but the guitar shredding is top notch.
Yngwie identifies as an American. Dude's a patriot.
Story update in 2021: his son Antonio is indeed a great guitar player.
Yes not as fast as his dad but still good. He goes under a different name.
Yngwie was cloned ! There are 3 of them. The original pre car wreck, the fat one after wreck, and the current one based of the original. They can all shred. Just saw him here in Holland. Michigan this past Sunday!!!
00:25 practicing more on cheeseburgers than Paganini.
Im not a huge fan of his music hut but i respect the hell out of his playing. Also, he's funny as hell
Adolescences is Gold. We Love You Malmsteen 🤘🏻🌎
He certainly has the Adolescent part of things down quite well. Acts like a 13 year old for sure.
whats the song playing in the background the second minute ?

I dont really know how to explain this, but my ex-girlfriend kind of looked like a (substantially sexier) girl version of yngwie.
What about 'Steeler'???

his sons guitar isnt scalloped,
thats not right.
You might change your opinion, because those songs are full of emotion.
epic103 Agree and +1 at your comment
epic103
hello sir which song is at 0:15 thank u
epic103 I guess I'm biased of the fact that I accept incredible fast piano playing, yet when it comes to the electric guitar... I don't know why. Doesn't touch me as classic rock does, but everyone is different they're own way. It's weird like that I suppose. Since I love Rachmaninoff, yet not Malmsteen.

Fair enough... but how can Icarus Dream Suite, Brothers, Crying, and Overture 1383 not touch you?
There is so much emotion and passion in those songs that it's ridiculous.
You would think that if you like Rachmaninoff that you'd dig Yngwie?
Btw... have seen Yngwie's Concerto concert? You might like it, it's 100% classical. Cheers
hmmm? whats that?
