Don't beat yourself up. Everyone has his ups and downs. You already said that there is room for improvement and you spotted some "weaknesses". I would focus on those . The mindset of the top guys should be not of your concern. The future is bright as long as you work hard. cheers :-)
Head UP. Next Race will be better! You Raced really good. You had a Mechanical. Now the mindgame sets in! Now it is time to stay calm and you know that you are top Racer and remember what you achieved all over the years. I will follow you through your EWS races and i still believe that the bigger Problem is you Mindset. But you will get it! Keep going on! Cheers
Lewis, please please please don't beat your self up, your a sick rider, you have a WHOLE career ahead of you, the chain came of you cleet shifted, most important thing from anything in life is that your health and wellbeing are good and that you learn from what happened. I'm no racer, but I've been watching racing and riding bikes for 3 decades, I can't see the longevity of any one who is hitting every race at 100% pace/risk, most people seem like they race to 80-90% of trained especially if they want to see the whole season. TBF when you dropped your chain it took me about a min + to realise you weren't still pedalling! Subbed ❤️
You looked smooth and fast, I seen you in a few key sessions. Like you said the top boys are pushing it that 10% more and taking them calculated risks where others aren’t. Suspension set up is key for sure.
Hey Lewis. Great video, especially the outro. I was impressed by how honest you were, which is what we really want to see bud. The section where you talk about risk was really interesting and it fits with the chat that I was having with a lot of spectators from the sides - 'how are they prepared to take those risks'. From a spectators point of view the fastest folks looked like they were dicing pretty close to the edge. They seemed to be able to run each stage like a DH run. It was intense to watch, although I'm sure it was more intense to ride. I wonder if some of these guys are just doing more racing dude? It seems to me like they seem comfortable to switch into that extreme mode. I don't know? Anyway, don't beat yourself up. Life is learning mate.
Don't be so hard on yourself mate, sometimes things just don't go to plan. On the plus side GMBN love your bike wrap! They gave it some love in the dirt shed show.
I think you did brilliant, and the top guys nowadays really push into each stage as if it was a single downhill race. Last year a Scottish local racer made a video comparison between his run and Jesse Melamed's, and he pointed out that in every flattish section, he would just go on the pedals while Jesse mashed it so hard his front wheel danced all over the place. The intensity is crazy, and I as a pretty cautious rider can't even begin to fathom the pace. There's less than 10 seconds between the overall time of place 15 and place 35. Thanks for this honest and super interesting video
Kudos for coming out and being so honest. The conditions certainly didn't help. I rode Caberston a few days prior and it was feeling sketchy. I thought the rain would balance it out but then we had two days of 18 degree weather and the trails were a real mixed bag. The corners were completely blown out. I don't think anyone expected the pace. Everyone was really sending it and pushing way harder.
head up Lew , You are a amazing raider , I ve seen you in person riding ... I was blown away from your riding skills . It just seem as you weren't having ''the go get it'' mindset.. And its normal , you use to push hard when you were younger and then had couple of big injuries.. so its all normal. cheer up lad
Lewis don't diss your self there,s enough people who will do that for you ,be proud in your achievements to us your an inspiration, dust your self off and look forward to the next race ,and remember have fun out there 👌👌👌
You're the enduro racer I follow the closest or pretty much the only one and why is that? Because your content is so relatable to the hobbyist! The bike setup vids, the race simulations, the raw footage and analysis, the situations where it looks like you were punching above your weight but then do great! (Hardline). You also do a great job at selling your sponsors; if my bike didn't exist and I wanted to buy an enduro I'd get that Norco 100%! (riding a Nicolai G1 M as a mullet with an elongated rear in the long travel position) As much as I'd like to see you at the very top, or at least in front of all the pros from Forbidden just to spite them, I'm in no position to give any advice on that front. Just keep your head up and continue your good work! :)
Hey homie, been watching you over the last couple years on the downhill race scene on some older wc series. And saw you on tommy c hypes chanel and saw u did TH-cam. Been loving watching your videos and understand how disappointing it must of been to have those mishaps, but if it means anything to you I'm blown away watching you ride and love your content. Got a supporter here from Australia ✌️ keep pushing mate.
Excellent riding! You've quickly become my favorite rider, I think it's the speed and smoothness of your flow. The bike looks amazing too. Greetings from California!
Like others have said, you were looking good, the times were so tight and the stages short, so anything small going against you (pedal issues, chain off for essentially a whole stage) is going to have a big impact on times, but also can effect mindset, even if you didn’t realise it at the time. If your chain hadn’t come off, you would likely have ridden the following stage with a more positive mindset, not that I’m saying you didn’t, but subconsciously it would have effected you. You have great speed and ability mate, the top boys are top boys because they are putting everything into it, on and off the bike, and have the support of teams and sponsors to do so. It’s a very fine line between them and someone like yourself, the gap is smaller than you may think. I saw Ella in an interview say she’d worked with a sports psychologist over the off season, it might be worth tapping her up for their details. It’s amazing what that type of work can do for you, and relatively easy to work at if your open to it. Chin up, rock on, and your going to fine Lew. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Very honest with your viewers hence ace fan base. I agree with others, mindset over ability - you have all the ability and have proven it countless times. You had mechanicals on the day that will have also played into your tempo on the clean stages and your overall result. Listening to your commentary. It’s seems down to choices. Wins versus your current approach. Wins versus everything. Not so simple when you have established your income etc spread over other requirements. If you want the wins, you probably require coaching back into the hunger and self confidence to win, to push training etc. But that’s not a simple choice when you have built a lifestyle and don’t accept the risk. Don’t beat yourself up on it. Your ability and content is exceptional, hence so many trackside shouts for you. Less mechanicals as a starting point will see you up the ranks in your accepted zone. Great content and job and representing Norco. Innes was out for international redemption and took it. Good on him. He must be monster trucked this week 😂
Lewis have you worked with a sports psychologist? It can make a real difference to unlock your physical potential. They'll help you connect with whatever it is that'll make you hungry for the win. You could give that a real try before you spend time wondering what place racing vs content creation has for you. It's not normal to be able to unlock the inner beast ALL the time at all. Most of those who do it are either very young or have spent proper time working with sports psychologists.
Deffo this. My friend has an MSc in Performance Psychology from Edinburgh Uni, happy to pass on her details if it's something you'd be interested in. Dust it off and you'll be reet in a few days!
Fun is fast - keep fun at the foremost and the rest will naturally follow. Having higher expectations can sometimes make it harder to relax and enjoy 'the experience' of it all. And yes - cranking it up three notches, is often not worth the exponential increase in injury potential - it's hard for anyone to gauge how many poker chips to lay on the table. That said, I was always happy coming in mid-pack or worse, as I'd live another day, unlike those guys going for the podium who always had some injury. How do you keep your brain from turning to mush with all that turning!?!?! Some of those parts had some real white knucklers - Way to ride (looked good from here!) - and you definitely had the coolest looking rig. Shame about that chain! such a freak occurrence
Hey Lewis, I've worked with a lot of young athletes in many sports and one of the things they are all taught psychology wise is never judge yourself from one result (good or bad). Try and learn from it, but its possible it could just be a blip in form, hopefully a short one. The best have the ability to assess their performance (good or bad) and move on to the next challenge 🤙🏽
I've watched a fair bit of onboards from the weekend and the difference in pace between the very front and even those in the 20s is obvious to see. It's a different level of commitment and it seems like a few other usually top riders were left scratching their heads the same as you as to why they couldn't click at that pace on this weekends trails. Whistler will be totally different and longer stages will no doubt suit you and the more comfortable bike.
Yo mate, you surely learned a lot this week-end. The top riders are for sure switching their brain off, and it is part of enduro but as you said, sometimes the risk is too big. Though you had some pace and this black box that is a stage can not explain everything.
Completely agree with what your saying how track changes, I ride Innerleithen on uplift a lot and even know I think I know the tracks I have days where I feel fast and confident and others where I can't work out what's going on, and I feel I'm slow and on the brakes too much and not performing, its a hard pill to swallow but end of the day your racing against other world class riders so I wouldn't beat yourself up over it too much. Also I think people ultimately put a lot of pressure on themselves at home races, Danny Hart is prime example of this when it comes to the DH in Fort William.
Lewis, great vid and really refreshing to hear your honesty. The difference between you and the top 10 is only a few percentage. So it is a case of improving a number of things by 1% and everything will come together. Going racing is really important. Practice is ok but if you want to go faster in a race you need to race. You need to practice not just the skills but the mindset! Fitness is super important? How often to train a week? When I was your age and training to win races, I trained 12 - 15 times a week (and held down a full time job). The bike looks dialled, but did you consider faster rear tyre in the dry conditions or did you use the same tyre that you would normally use for Golfie / Inners? Happy to help if I can.
Dude, knee injury and dry conditions. How often is it dry in Scotland. Not that often. That’s massive. No excuses, but some days you are the hammer, some days you are the nail.. thanks for sharing, you are always a humble open dude.

seems to be many that are in your spot - hard round to start on for 1st race you can't open up the throttle and hard to gauge speed some guys just SENT IT from what I seen JACK is a clued UP RACER he seems LAID BACK but he is a puzzler even he and many others - was a HARD round to get a feeling of speed and confidence
I think that’s too hard to say, my bike is going good and I have good people around me to help set up the bike. It’s more a mindset thing for me really.
@@LewisBuchanan yeah no worries you know your self better then I do. You just mentioned to say in the comments so I did. Tweed looks like a super tight and technically place and that longer bike might be stalling mid corner vs some people rocking tiny bikes aka Jack moir is on a Small frame. But if you think it’s mind frame. I can’t blame you. After those mechanicals you would feel pretty deflated…
TH-cam and 'making content' is more important to you than racing by the sounds of it. Shame. You won't be young forever. Just try being a YT star when you are old and past it
It’s not actually “more important to me”. It’s a mental thing for me when racing, that can be sorted which I’m going to try so. Cheers for the input though 😂

Don’t beat yourself up about it, mechanicals and track conditions didn’t go your way unfortunately😢 good luck for the other rounds! Pray for Rain lol
Thanks Scott
ciao Lewis , je pense tu as pas besoin d être déçu l enduro est bien engagé je t ai trouvé dans le coup man après voilà faut de l entrainement pour gagner ...Y.B rider
👏🏼👏🏼
seems to be many that are in your spot - hard round to start on for 1st race you can't open up the throttle and hard to gauge speed
some guys just SENT IT
from what I seen
JACK is a clued UP RACER he seems LAID BACK but he is a puzzler
even he and many others - was a HARD round to get a feeling of speed and confidence
👏🏼
Shit happens, put a chainguide on the downtube side of the crank, ride your bike and smoke the EWS💪
your bike might be abit long... and from the footage ive seen of you, your suspention seems stiffer then alot of other ppl
I think you just need to find your mental flow state, when you describe Vidal and Heap...those guys are in the zone. Switch the brain off
Totally
TH-cam and 'making content' is more important to you than racing by the sounds of it. Shame. You won't be young forever. Just try being a YT star when you are old and past it
Bit harsh that! My guy is already faster than 99% of mountain bikers out there, always someone like you to be a nob though!
It’s not actually “more important to me”. It’s a mental thing for me when racing, that can be sorted which I’m going to try so. Cheers for the input though 😂
Cheers gave
To be fair, if ur chain hadn’t come of u would’ve done so much better so don’t give yourself to much grief, just move on to the nxt one🤷🏼♂️
@@LewisBuchanan yea fair enough maybe the wrong choice of words! All the best in the rest of the series.
Chin up bud..hope you smash it in Canada.
I've been riding GT and inners for best part of twenty years(poorly) always find it weird when it's bone dry🏴🦾
Thanks so much
