I'm glad that Rapha mentions the champion pool vs Raisy. I'm a huge Raisy fanboy. In those finals, I always got the sense that Raisy lost in the champion pick phaze. He got so many raw deals. And Rapha is spot on in the fact that it's because the championpool favors Rapha in a sense. It obviously matters as well that Rapha was one of the only people in the world that discovered an answer to Raisy's strongest pick; clutch. Usually people had to ban clutch against Raisy, giving Raisy a big advantage. Rapha didn't have to do that. That means that Rapha has even bigger advantage in the champion pick phaze. Had the champion pool looked any different, we might've seen a completely different result in the rapha vs raisy rivalry.

In my eyes, the reason for Rapha's success is that he has found ways to make his brain incessantly filter out the realistic optimal decision faster than his opponent can, and then maintain that for ten to twenty minutes at a time. It doesn't even need to be a large discrepancy, those fractions of a second add up until he's five steps ahead(apologies) and the opponent realises the mistake they're making too late to do anything about it. There are so many things you have to do both during the game and between maps/games/tournaments to shorten your decision making tree to such an extreme degree, it's impressive how far he's been willing and able to push it. If Rapha wants to discuss it next time you sit down with him, and there are obviously plenty of valid reasons he might not want to, could you ask him about the parallels between the decision making of Rapha and the decision making of Shane Hendrixson? That is to say, what lessons from his e-sports career has he applied to his personal life and vice versa?
I like fps in general and quake is one of the best without a doubt, its kinda sad, that getting into quake nowadays is a madness, due to the low playerbase and the skill ceiling of the game. I watched rapha multiple times, he is a really smart player and supercomplete, maybe he hasnt the best rockets or the best lg but he is really good at everything obviously far above the average, when he is in the zone is nasty, always one step ahead and the consistency and how he manages the emotions during games is astonishing, even when he seems tilted its rare when he is out of the game.
Just like FGC, Arena FPS may have lower playerbase these day but it still create a stack grassroot competition within community. So-called esports fans these day talking shit about Rapha are just a corporate shill and a bunch of bandwagon.
Hey Dan, do you have any input on whats being done wrong in terms of player retention in duel games? Whether its game design or developer choice making or the gamemode itself?
Quake needs people like DDK giving it some space to shine. Thank you for doing quake content, we dont get nearly enough. Its honestly sad how dead quake is but how many of these zoomers would love the game if they took 2 hours to learn the movement
I feel like the problem with quake is that it is a 1v1. From a competitive standpoint this is great, like chess and starcraft there is sort of a legitimacy to the ranking system because the variables are absolute, you are 100% responsible for every win or loss, there are no team mates to throw your games. However this is bad because ever since gaming entered the mainstream, the purpose of gaming shifted from being nerds looking for escapism, towards being a social activity. People like playing games with their friends. You see this across the board. Look at the fighting game community, they are a prime example of doing everything right and supporting/promoting their game for 20years. They have so much passion for their respective games and yet it still struggles to reach a high viewership and playerbase. There is nothing wrong with the game mechanics, many of these games being played haven’t been updated or changed in decades. Maybe a 3v3 team gamemode similar to fencing would work, without removing the dueling gameplay.
@@WARnTEAThere are lots of non-1v1 gamemodes in Quake. If your concern isn't with competitive, there's absolutely nothing stopping you from playing them (and actually 2v2 does have ranked)
@@WARnTEA so a team of duel players? Playing for like an overall team score? I know many sports do similar things with individual and team achievements. But dueling is social just a matter of finding people to duel with n shoot the shit.
@@h4724-q6j It doesn't matter how many game modes there are, the game will only grow big if the default gamemode is the competitive mode played in the esport. Call of Duty's esport struggles despite being one of the most played games because the competitive mode(s) is just one of many in the list, and not the most popular game mode.
33:23 I think is essentially why rapha has dominated for so long, his play style relies mostly on good timing and movement, where a lot of other players rely on their raw mechanics more. But rapha also has incredible mechanics.
when you guys talked about mousepads, rapha mentioned something about alternative feet for glasspads. i think he's talking about UHMW tape. UHMW is a bit slower and louder, but much more durable and inexpensive. just punch dots out of it and you got great feet.
I would love for you or anyone honestly to cover quake and give people a window into the scene. Please more Quake plz Quake is the best and its literally about to die with dipshit syncerror making our game worse n worse with every update plz DDK we need some eyes on Quake please
Oh man i wished this was more about the joy of playing wuake rather than the business of quake and e-"sports". The interview felt like some textbook for pros rather than all gamers. Huge respect for rapha. He's a champ but delusional to "expect to always win". You're playing against another human. Completely disconsidering the other person, saying "it's all up to you" requires a serious dose of arrogance and obtuseness. Maybe that's an important ingredient to winning tournaments. But, out of all that he said, I feel that to him it's strictly business and no fun. I hope I'm wrong.
nah, with all do respect to Rapha, Quake has too small pro scene to consider rapha best fps player of all time. There are literally like 4-5 ppl competing for no. 1 spot in the league or 1st play in a tournamnet, rest is just a background....
@@hippie9589 yeah, but if u do not have competition, u can play a game let's say even 3 times more challenging than Quake, you will be multiple champion, but without any real flood of talents to this game. Raisy is top dog in QPL, and he came here from being professional or semi-professional CSGO player. Do you know Raisy from any outstanding performance in CSGO, or even being mentioned as lets say top 100 player in the world at some rankings? I would love Quake to be considered as the pinnacle of e-sport, but unfortunately it is not, and when there are players competing against thousands of best talents in other games, and being multiple times champions in those titles, well, for me choice is clear here.
Quake is the OG fps, it literally invented esports. Incredibly ignorant comment, bordering on ragebaiting or trolling. The player base isnt that small, and obviously QC is only one game in an extremely popular series, Quake 1, 2, 3, and Quake Live have all had millions of players over the years. It's not like QC is this completely new game that came out of nowhere. Even CS:GO is essentially a glorified Quake mod (Source is derived from the Quake Engine).
@@Wobbothe3rd you mistake influence of Quake with it's player base. There is like 300ppl playing QL on average - for about 10 years now since they cancelled stand alone client. QC 7 years on the market, avg player base is around 300 too. Q1, 2, 3 original, 4 can have same results, and this is very optimistic assumption, I am almost sure they have far lower numbers. And those statistics count aliases, so if player A has 5 troll accounts and use them during a day with changed IP, all those 5 accounts will be counted in, but in fact, it's only 1 person behind them. Now from all those numbers, let's say 2000 players total in qll quakes, how many actually play duels, 20% maybe? Let's say 30% = 650 players. Across 6 Quake instances, which gives 100 players per game. And from those players, there is like maybe 0.1% new players, the rest are oldtimers playing quake for last 25 years, who have long time ago reached their peak shape, and will never again be better than their past form somewhere in the myst of the time. From this group of ppl actively playing duels, how many are at the top level, 30 maybe? And from this 30, like super elite level are like 5-6, rest are pretty much irrelevant background. Yes, very good players, but realisticly, they do not win anything, and maybe once per 2-3 years someone from this group makes a surprise and goes into quater or semi final. And that;s it. In Counter Strike - you have millions of ppl playing this game. Big THOUSANDS, maybe hundreds of thousands actively trying to become pro players. You have huge leagues, schools, trainers, like it's literally different universe compared to QUake. Quake best time of popularity was time when Fatality was playing in big simplicity, maybe few years after this too, but player base has been pretty much only declining for like last 20 years. Ppl (quake players) say it's because its too hard for new players :) Interesting, so it wasn't too hard for new players in 2000s where player base was good? Average player now aims 2 times as good as average player 20 years ago, especially with aim trainers now, internet, YT tutorials etc etc, it is very easy to catch up for new players nowadays if they have talent and dedication. And yet noone comes to Quake, as ppl do not play arena shooters anymore. THere are no ppl - there are no sponsors. There are no sponsors, there are no money. There are no money, there are no pro players. It's that simple. Arena shooters, can be too hard for average Joe to hop in - I agree. But this rule is not applying to best players in the world, for them it's not too hard. It's just that there are no monies here. Who joined quake pro scene in last 6-7 years? Raisy, Vengeur, Maxter. Vengeur is already world champion, Raisy will never be (but is almost always second), and Maxter is currently like top 5-6th player in the world. Strongsage coming in now, already can surprise some old players, time will show if he shows something more. So 1/4 of QPL is already new players, which only shows that it's not impossible to beat old quake champs for new players. The problem is there are almost no new players trying - BECAUSE THERE ARE NOT MONIES AND FAME ON THE TABLE. Not because it's too hard. @sixmillion As for Shroud or other good players from other games, not only CSGO - if there is no timing items in those fps games, ofc they could go toe to toe against rapha, and I would even say they are better aimers, so they would win. Rapha is winning because of timing items, which is very specific skillset only present in arena shooters, and I am not sure if even in all, or only in some of them. I guess it's maybe a matter of deciding what actually is arena or boomer shooter. Even rapha himself being asked about competing in CSGO when he was trying to do something there before QC was released said that his aim is not good enough to be at the top there. So why u put rapha's success in quake higher than other players success in other games, where there is more competition and harder to be a champ? You think that quake players has best aim, which can be in some aspects, but for sure this kind of generalisation is totally wrong. There are different aim types + quake duel is very specific game mode with timing items. You would be surprised how good aimers you can find in Team Fortress or Unreal for example. There are amazing aimers in Overwatch too, and in fact there are amazing aimers in almost every game now, even in COD. Not sure why timing items is even considered a great skill as it DOES NOT transfer to pretty much any other types of fps games. There where times where a lot of best Quake players transferred to Overwatch when QL competition was cancelled and QC was still not there. Did they destroy everyone, and everyone was shit scared of them? :). NO THEY DID NOT. Yes, they were strong, yes, they were very solid players, but they did not demolish anyone pretty much. I would even say I was surprised of their performance in negative way, it was the moment I realised the Quake is not any pinnacle of fps games, it is just a game like a lot others, with some special mechanics. And like any other game, the best players have great talent but also dedicated whole their life to this game. Yes, Quake is fps game with greatest history and influence on the genre, maybe Doom can be considered higher. But it does not automatically put QUake players above other players from other games. So it's not me trolling or being ignorant, it's u not understanding the situation and gloryfing things you should not be glorifying. Is rapha best Quake player in history? I think we all agree he is. But if you ask me if he is best fps player that ever lived? It's big no for me. 1st thing - because his aim is too weak for me to consider him as being the best. And yes, his not too good aim is also limiting him a lot outside of quake where there is no timing items and a lot other factors start to matter. And 2nd thing - rapha biggest success comes in the era where quake pro scene was not developing, on a contrary, year by year it was diminishing, and it still is diminishing without new talents bringing challenge to old time players.
Best fps player of all time ? Hahahaha dude would not hit shit in Apex Legends due to his desk and mouse setup lol only play one game over and over but best " FPS " player ? Lol put it against beaulo in siege ! Put it against Faide in apex, put it against S1mple in csgo, put it against Tenz in valorant, put it against baranox in battlefield, i'm not even gonna talk about overwatch best " FPS " player what a joke.
lmao that game is kiddy toys compared to Arena FPS like Quake. Stfu. That overhyped crap of game only got paid huge attention in esports media with a major backed by TO and I hate how the esports game you mentioned are just gone for being too corporates, franchises/partnership and no longer grassroot. Complete crap and messed here and there compared to a pure grassroot esports competitive like Arena FPS and FGC
yetah we assumed that. we thought that you actually LOVED quake. not that you'd prefer a moba bs abilities non competitive version of 'quake'....like of course rpah would like a game where you can cheese every champion and hitbox differnces. its not about what YOU can make in qc that determines your style like in any other quake, its the hitboxes, speed disadvantages vs advantages...so boring. why does he still laugh at people who ACTUALLY LOVE QUAKE NOT being interested in a cheesy version of quake like champions???

It's cool you guys kind of stumbled on game theory without really realizing it. The talks about exploiting a training partner and only playing to be able to beat them and rapha talking about being "balanced". There's a theoretically optimal way to play the game and your base should be to strive to that ideal and understand what that type of play might look like. Someone who cannot be exploited by anyone, someone who could never lose. So really, the practice should first and foremost be how to become such a player, then secondarily you can work on exploitative strategies by playing vs many types of players and finding how they deviate from what you believe to be "the ideal".

Put those guys in quake and see if they can beat rapha then?
rapha did play overwatch competitively
lmao that game is kiddy toys compared to Arena FPS like Quake. Stfu. That overhyped crap of game only got paid huge attention in esports media with a major backed by TO and I hate how the esports game you mentioned are just gone for being too corporates, franchises/partnership and no longer grassroot. Complete crap and messed here and there compared to a pure grassroot esports competitive like Arena FPS and FGC
yetah we assumed that. we thought that you actually LOVED quake. not that you'd prefer a moba bs abilities non competitive version of 'quake'....like of course rpah would like a game where you can cheese every champion and hitbox differnces. its not about what YOU can make in qc that determines your style like in any other quake, its the hitboxes, speed disadvantages vs advantages...so boring. why does he still laugh at people who ACTUALLY LOVE QUAKE NOT being interested in a cheesy version of quake like champions???
cringe
He'd still beat u in a duel on quake live regardless
I mean isn't he still the goat excluding quake champions lol. Him or cypher all right good riddance.
he's the best in both games and appreciates both games for what they are while you cry on the internet because your sense of personal validation is tied to people liking a specific video game.
LETS GO
Nice
