Hey everyone! I hope you enjoyed the slight change of pace with this upload. I’ll be back to making the usual stuff soon, with my next video being a podcast episode about The Blues Brothers and the next video after that being a video essay about Wes Anderson’s The Darjeeling Limited. Just watched Empire Records which i loved and it reminded me of Dazed and Confused. Looked for comporable movies and that brought me to this video. Think it definitly deserves an honorable mention as well.
I could see that. I think you’d really like SubUrbia if you need another rec. It’s basically the middle ground between Empire Records and Dazed. Empire records is great though. If you look at the background in some of my videos you might notice a VHS copy of it next to my Dazed and Confused one behind me lol
Yes, Dazed and Confused is essentially an updated version of American Graffiti, just with the characters facing the issues growing up in 1976, as opposed to 1962. It's interesting how those in '62 had a much simpler life, before the death of Kennedy, Vietnam and Watergate. Dazed and Confused follows the characters as they try to make sense of a society post all of these events. And yet it's also interesting how the characters have many of the same lusts, desires and general conversations in both films. They are so similar, and yet so different. I really hope we can have one set in the Reagan-era 80s and nostalgic 90s.
That’d definitely be something. I’m surprised not that many filmmakers have taken it upon themselves to make a Dazed/American Graffiti for other decades (if you want a good one that escaped my mind till just now, 1991’s Dogfight could pass as a good one for the 60s too.)
Never seen Dazed and Confused, but DID see American Graffiti a few years ago and, know what? I liked it a lot. Really like comedies that pivot into drama or melancholy. Feels like it hits stronger if you've been disarmed with laughter for a while. Makes me wonder what other kinds of movies we missed out on from Lucas had Star Wars not become the monolith it did. Same feeling with THX.
We’re on the same page, and I think you’ll love D&C for that reason (as well as Linklater in general if you aren’t familiar with his stuff, though they’re seldom straight comedies). I actually haven’t seen THX but I’m hoping to change that this year! It’s been on my list for a long time
@@NicheCaesar Sadly the only version you can legally see of THX is his Special Edition, with all the added VFX. But they aren't as egregious as the Star Wars Special Editions, though there are a few bits that stick out like sore thumbs.
Yeah I know. I was hoping to maybe secure a fan scan of the theatrical cut to get around them, but I may just cut my losses and borrow the dvd or Blu ray (if it even got one) from my local library.

Almost Famous could be an honorable mention as well.
Oh yeah, it totally could! Good call
