As a fellow native of the DMV and a lover of all things musical, Go-go music is in my blood I rock it all the time especially ol’ school and current grown up sounded Go- go as a young buck-a-roo of the 80’s and 90’s…no hate on the youngn’s and they’re sound of today tho!👍🏾✊🏾Lovin your content, dope piece of history of the sound!! Keep doing your thing beautiful brown Queen💐
Chuck Brown and The Soul Searchers used to practice in my neighbors basement connected right next to my house in the 70's when Blow Your Whistle first came out this was at the Birth of Go-Go i used to come over while they practiced then they let me play with the instruments after practice that's what got me into music those huge Traynor Amp heads with the Bright Red or Blue Cushion Sparkling covers those were the days you could have a basement band and the neighbors wouldn't complain
Let us not forget all of the great DC bands from the 1970s who laid the foundation for the GOGO sound. Particularly those groups who were part of the Showmobile and Summer in the Parks circuit back then. Also credit has to go to the legendary drummer Harvey Mason who created the classic GOGO pocket beat with his performance on " Mister Magic" with Grover Washington. That syncopated groove is still used today in the genre...🤘🏾🎼🤘🏾
In all reality the beat came from when we were in school and we would be hitting drum beats on the Classroom Desks that's how it really started fr.fr. 😅😅
I'm nearly 60 and a hardcore music lover but am just hearing of this genre today! So much time to make up for! I came to YT to get some definition and this video was a great choice for its history. Thank you! About to start geting educated over the next few hours. How exciting!
I love that this is DMV music. Crazy thinking the rest of the world doesnt have this. I got to see Chuck in RVA at music festival. Watched him both nights. Im white as hell but GoGo speaks to me
Language is important and we have to admit that Black Heat, Scacy and those other bands. Were funk bands that played at DC Go Go clubs. But it was not until 1976 that Chuck Brown adopted Grover Washington's "Mr. Magic" song's beat pattern. That was the creation of Go Go music.
I have a weekly internet radio show called The GoGo Time Machine and I play all the classic old school GoGo. When I played The Young Senators many if not most of my listeners didn’t know about The Young Senators. Wish there was some live recordings out there to play.
Oh snap reppin my City's sound, BYB all day, RIP Chuck. Dont know how close you are to DC. But if you get a chance check out Go-Go 101 at the Kennedy center every last Friday of the month. Its mainly a discussion panel focusing on the History, cultural impact, and also focusing on trying to make Go-go the official Music of DC. Cause gentrification damn near killed the Genre. Great Content
I always felt a little Cuban Salsa in GoGo music but maybe it's just me.. Also I think New Orleans bounce music borrowed a little bit from Go Go aswell.
Can you do the samba and it’s origins it’s a Brazilian dance they do for annual carnivals in Brazil. It was a good thing learning about go go music I never knew about it because I’m from New York I think that’s why I see that African roots in it.
I do everything on my phone! I use a basic video editing app called YouCut- Video Editor, and for the parts where I use other ppls videos I just screen record my phone and crop it down when I put it into the video. So much easier lol.
I trained and played with Darrel Rose. Those Gogo beats are not traditional African beats. He would come to our school and teach us traditional stuff. Then let us make some beats of our own. Several were Gogo. He called them "Gogo" beats. Side note, I got to play his jemba with gold shakers on the sides. Bout lost my lunch I was so honored. I still remember the drum being so loud I couldn't hear what i was playing. One of the best memories as a kid.
@@rickymcclung6 exactly I played African drum 🪘 in different places growing up and it sounds nothing like gogo . Pan Africanism made us give all credit to Africans instead ourselves the narratives don’t make sense
@@CITYOFSHOOTERS that's why i cringe when they try to make this born of some Latin thing. Chuck's band my have been called Los Latinos but the members were ALL BLACK AMERICANS and whether they played "top 40 with a latin swing" as described in this video will have to be proved to me. They wont give Black Americans credit for anything!

Chuck Brown's songs namely "I Feel Like Bustin' Loose(1979)" and "We The People(1972)" still rock at the Hip Hop culture jams I attend every year
We the people Isn’t gogo
Wale 'Pretty Girls' - what a tune! And them congas Whew!

Amerie used the GoGo sound in her music when she came out in the early 2000s and Beyoncé song “Crazy in love” had GoGO sounds in it also.
Oh you're right about the Amerie song! I forgot about that. That was a pretty dope song
Amerie is from DC
Excellent and informative video.....I remember chuck brown and go go music...it was different but good.
..peace
Love go go music!

Yea, Samba would be a good genre to cover!
What are you using to make your videos? And how do you download parts of other peoples videos?

Gogo is not funk that’s a white definition
Gogo isn’t an African beat either 😂

It’s definitely apart of African culture and beats.
