Noted Freethinker and Malayalam authour Ravichandran C here traces the neurological origin and evolution of human language. This is his third presentation in the ‘Masthiskom Katha parayunnu’ series started in May, 2016 at Palakkad. ‘Masthishkom Katha parayunnu’ is the Malayalam translation of ‘the tell tale brain’ by Dr Vilayannoor S Ramachandran published by DC books, Kottayam in May 2016. In this presentation, Ravichandran makes out a detailed estimate of the genesis of language by analyzing the theories of Noam Chomsky, Steve Pinker, Stephan Jay Gould and Vilayannoor Ramachandran. This programme was conducted by Kerala Freethinkers Forum at the Press Club, Trivandrum on 23.6.16 at 4 pm.

as a human we all try to help each other. Especially logical thinkers. Why is he putting so much of effort to explain in common language? It's exactly opposite purpose of your question. It's to people to understand and ask back if they feel he is wrong in any logic. He gives respect and clarity. You have to learn to ask a question first with due respect because he talks common sense. You should talk back common sense too in a simple language. He deserves it. Dear Ravichandran Sir, what is the logical and rational plausibility of our assumption that physical objects which are made up of atoms (it is self-evident that atoms don't have any self-awareness!) , for example, a stone(or inorganic material) of certain mass(Kg), when subjected to evolutionary forces of magnitude of certain Newtons(N) for trillion, trillion, trillions of years or even infinite time , the stone will become 'self aware' in such a way that now the stone is able to 'think', 'aware', and 'reason' about even 'its' own existence and 'its' surroundings, able to grasp the laws of physics, mathematics, able to involve in logical reasoning, able to draw logical conclusions, etc.?

DNA is an ideal information storage system (One gram of DNA can store 5.5 petabits i.e 700 terabytes of data. To store the same kind of data on hard drives the densest storage medium in use today - you’d need 233 3TB drives, weighing a total of 151 kilos).The four bases (ACGT) of DNA represent the four digits of the genetic numbering system. The DNA sequence is digital in base-4 digits since there are four bases. In each of the some 300 trillion cells in every human body, the WORDS of life churn almost flawlessly through our flesh and nervous system at a speed that utterly dwarfs the data rates of all the world's supercomputers. For example, just to assemble some 500 amino-acid units into each of the trillions of complex hemoglobin molecules that transfer oxygen from the lungs to bodily tissues takes a total of some 250 peta operations per second. Not to mention about function of brain, respiration, nutrition, waste disposal, repair, energy etc.
So counting 50 defects in our eye is very ‘‘easy’’.

Genetic information from DNA is copied to messenger RNA (mRNA) which needs symbols and their meaning. This transcription process creates a coded message from the DNA, an enzyme computer reads the genetic code by copying it to into the related mRNA. The mRNA has copy of the original DNA code, and is EDITED by other proteins to reduce errors. Note that mRNA is a communication medium, equivalent to a wire carrying electronic signals to ribosome which is a computerized protein building factory that reads the mRNA sequence (using over 50 proteins and additional RNA) .This translation process build proteins based on the coded message and these proteins make our 300 trillion celled body with all its organs. It is too simplistic to say the purpose of all creatures is to take Photostat copies for next generation, copying a junk data will only produce more junk data, but it is crystal clear information that is copied here.

The most amazing and important thing is that the each genes and proteins of the first cell(zygote) knows which organ at which part of the body it have to create & be part of (e.g. for teeth,liver, eye, ear, heart or kidney-----), activating some genes while suppressing others. These specific molecules for millions of specific tissues and organs cannot be formed spontaneously. Their production requires sequences and codes that simply do not evolve by random and spontaneous processes. It is SEQUENCES and CODES that make the difference between LIFE and MATTER. It is semiosis [symbol translation system] that does not exist in the inanimate world, and that is why biology is not a complex form of chemistry where action/reaction creates emerging properties of new compounds.
It is important not only to transmit the messages reliably from the DNA, but the enzymes and ribosomes must already know how to interpret that coded information in order to manufacture proteins (including enzymes), RNA, and replicated DNA appropriately. For proper communication to occur, both sender and receiver of each communication step must know the communication protocol and how to handle the message. In each cell, there are multiple operating systems, multiple programming languages, specialized communications systems, encoding/decoding hardware and software, error detection and correction mechanisms, specialized input/output channels for organelle control and feedback, and a variety of specialized "devices" to accomplish the tasks of LIFE. Successful communication for example assumes the reader of the letters of this write-up can appropriately decode the blotches of ink on the white background to gain information based not only on the forms of those blotches, but on knowledge in the reader's data-base, i.e. reader knows English language. . If you think of the human genome as a manual to build a complex machine like an aircraft, imagine what would happen if you copied the page that describes passenger seats and inserted it into the section that describes jet engines. But REDUCTIONISM is stuck up with only analyzing the printing ink of this write-up, (eg. studying the brain areas by analyzing the lighting up of brain regions.)
Laws of chemistry and physics, which follow exact statistical, thermodynamic, and spacial laws, are totally inadequate for generating complex functional information or those systems that process that information using prescriptive algorithmic information. Information doesn't have mass or charge or length in millimeters. Likewise, matter doesn't have bytes. This lack of shared descriptors makes matter and information two separate domains of existence
Random data has the highest possible complexity and uncertainty as per the second law of thermodynamics. Information theory also highlights the necessity of codes for reliable data communication. Formal organization requires deliberate programming decisions, not just self-ordering physicodynamic redundancy. Self-ordering phenomena are low-informational (Quartz slab, snow flakes sand dunes, flocks of birds etc) highly redundant, unimaginative, and usually destructive of organization (e.g., tornadoes and hurricanes). There is no known law of nature, no known process and no known sequence of events which can cause information to originate by itself in matter. Life is cybernetic in that it generates and controls its components using its components. Life's control and communication is digitally-based, and can be analyzed as a multi-computer system.
BOTTOMLINE:-Random and Self-ordering phenomena cannot generate cybernetic organization.

specific, like written language. It uses triplet codes which are like words
