I'm french and live in a small village in the north-east of France.
One day, when I was still a teen (10 to 15 years ago), I hear an engine noise. I go to the window and see an A110 parked on the sidewalk next to my house. I ran outside to see it leave. I've been in love with the Alpine ever since (I also love the new one).

It's blue because blue is the national racing color of France. UK is green, Italy is red, Belgium is yellow, Germany is white, USA is blue/white. That's why Ferrari's and Alfa Romeo's are red and Jaguars mostly green. I drove the new Alpine when it was just released because my uncle is a Renault dealer. 250hp, 1000kg.. was awesome.

Legendary Michèle Mouton, worlds best female rally driver..ever. debuted in 1973 Monte Carlo Rally, rallying as a co-driver but quickly moved to the driver's seat in 1974, steering an Alpine-Renault A110. Rest is history 😂😂😂 Cheers Ian, enjoy the weekend.

Most women today just want to get everything by doing nothing. Women crying about wanting the same amount of money as men without being able to compete on that level. Mouton could compete with men on the same level as the best. Modern feminists could learn something from her... but they wont.

Frenchman here. Very cool to see your excitement over our Berlinette. Always loved them but never saw an A110 in the wild. First saw one last summer, at the Dieppe Alpine meeting where there was 1000 Alpine, of all models. Even got to see and hear the Renault Formula 1 from 2018, but with an Alpine livery.
Look up the Alpine A310. It has a 4 cylinders version, a V6 version, and it competed in Group 4 and Group 5 in rally. It is considered the French 911. It is my favorite car design ever

German here. Great car, very light car, maybe not perfect in the rain (It was rumored to never being really water tight ;-) but a light car with less power is better than a very powerful car that is too heavy-or has a bad weight distribution....I love that car. Well done, man, very well done!

    Hi,
The alpine A110 was also once a French police pursuit car. I still remember finding one once in my rear mirror. I was told back then that it could reach up to 260 km/h.
But of course that was some years ago before super car could hit 300km/h as if it was nothing.

The documentary talks about a guy that actually restore Alpine A110 (Berlinette), to the point to build a complete new chassis since some of them are 45+ years old sitting outside. Alpine is indeed part of Renault (including in Formula 1 now), and they did build a new A110. The original car had a 1600 or 1800 (1.6 liter and 1.8 liter) engine, around 180HP and was heavily used in Rally because it was also very light.

one of my previous boss had one Alpine A100 "berlinette" and a Renault 5 Turbo2 side by side in his garage.
he told me about the trip to Portugal he did with his wife with the 2 cars to participate to an amateur rally during winter. Weather was cold and roads were partialy iced and they stoped to drink a cofee just after Bordeaux. His wife was driving the Alpine and he was driving the R5.
He told her : "you drive like a maniac! Roads are slippery and you passe me at high speed"
She answered : "roads aren't slippery and this car drives like a charm"
He was struggling to keep the Renault 5 Turbo2 on the road because the turbo effect was nearly impossible to manage while she was driving the Alpine without any problem because this car is a pure marvel
these small (very small i barely fited in my boss' car) cars are really rare but perfectely ingeneired that's why the Alpine won the world championship and the became a high class brand with the A310 (my faviorite with its V6) and A610 (also a V6 but less sporty because the car was equipped with a lot of modern gizmos)
    Alpine is legendary in France

For the story, as a frenchman i was born in 1977, my parents owned the Alpine A110 at this time. As it was only a two seaters, and the laws were different at the time, i spent the 6 first month of my life in basket in the back of the car when we were travelling. In fact, the creators of the car had only made enough space for the helmets for the driver and co-driver, as the car was meant to race or be used on the street. Maybe is it why, 46 years after, i'm totally mad about cars. I was just next to the roaring engin as a baby ^^ And then as and adult, i owned sports cars, such as the Renault Megane RS R26, the Focus RS Mk2 and Mk3...
And right now, i'm thinkin about buying the new Alpine A110, or a Mustang Mach 1, yes i now, two opposite cars, but two dreams for me.
Thanks for your videos, always a pleasure to watch

As a frenchman this is a dream car. The proto one is a bit too much widebody for my taste tho, I like the classic body. It had a few motor options from 50 to 200hp, and even more hp with a turbo for some rallye. This cars had a reputation for beeing so well balance and easy to push around (with only 1400lbs, she's a lightweight).
The new A110 is a beast, same ideology, more powerfull with the Megane RS engine, and a lot of electronics that are very cool like a drift mode where the car limit itself in angle so you can slide very fast but not spin out. It has a base model, S version, a GT, and the A110r, all those version would give their respective rivals a run for their money on a racetrack.
We are very good at making FWD cars, but this is a prime example of what the french manufacturers are capable of but rather do boring cars...
Check out the Renault R8 Gordini from the same era, rear engine as well, you'll love it too.
I've never seen any of them since I live on an island and I'm too young, but I love to drive them on the simulator alongside other rallye legends like the R5 turbo.

The history of Alpine starts already in 1955. The first model was based on the Renault 4CV, a small 4 door family car, one of which I actually drove when taking my drivers license in 1965. The modern Alpine A110 is my absolute favourite rear wheel drive car. You're doing a great job, Thanks!
P.s. The blue colour is basically known as the French Racing Blue - like Ferrari Red, German Silver and British Green...

I was lucky enough to ride as a passenger in a 2018 Renault Alpine a110 in Germany! Despite its small engine size (1,8 turbo, 252hp) it has super car performance weighing in at only 2250 lbs. An absolute blast!! Its not even that expensive- about the same price as say a higher spec 3 series BMW, which considering it's exclusivity and wild perfomance is a bargain! Would be nice to own one some day, although I can't see them depreciating in price any time soon..

Saludos.

This could be a longer post... I had my first encounter with an Alpine as a small boy in the early 1970s. At that time, an ADAC mountain race was held on my home mountain, regularly and since years. My godfather, who had been working for a well-known tire manufacturer for some time and had completed training in the automotive sector, took me to the paddock. And although I've always had a soft spot for airplanes, I was really fascinated by all the rally cars. And then I saw my first Alpine... It was something like love at first sight. Later, as a teenager, I also completed training in the automotive sector, at, of all places, the local Renault dealer. My boss had driven rallies himself when he was younger, in an R8 Gordini. This was a version of a car with more than twice the horsepower that my grandfather drove a few years earlier and with which I was well acquainted. Then I went back to school to further my qualifications and then I found a nice job with a global German automotive supplier. When I had to do my (civilian) service for the fatherland, I had my next encounter with an Alpine, but then in the wild. One day I noticed a white R10 where I was "stationed". This car was a slightly more luxuriously equipped variant of the R8, which had also received a new body, but the technology was largely based on the parts that had already been used in the R8 (this car had only 3 fuses. Can you imagine that?). However, some things had also been changed, such as 4 disc brakes, which were the absolute exception when the car came onto the market at the late 60s! In any case, this R10 had enormous extensions with rear wheels that could only be described as Formula 1 rollers. This car, which was also used in rally sports, came across me on the road two or three times. But one day, I met my goddess. All in white, she stood there on the side of the road and waited patiently for her owner to return. I had also started taking photographs at this time and happened to have my camera with me. I blew half a film and then unfortunately had to go back to my obligations. However, I had a serious suspicion that the person who drove the R10 could also be the owner of the 110, which later turned out to be a correct idea. I came across it several times until one day I saw it parked again and the owner had just reached his treasure and was preparing to unlock his car. I spontaneously stopped. At that time I was driving an R5 Alpine, with 93 hp and 850 kg weight, a sprinter that was very tailored to French "Route National" road conditions. I then spoke to him and we chatted for a while and talked shop about Renault and Alpine. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough balls in my pants at the time to ask him if I could ride with him for a few kilometers. A missed opportunity... Unfortunately I have to admit yet another missed opportunity when it comes to Alpine. About 1 1/2 years earlier, on New Year's Day in 1988, my girlfriend and I drove over to the nearest gas station to buy a few little things for us two party-weakened people. Back then I regularly read the Oldtimer Market magazine. And of course the brand new issue was on time on January 1st. appeared. I bought it and then drove back to my friend in Schleptau with the other things. Back home, I took a closer look at the magazine. This magazine also included a large vehicle exchange, advertisements from car dealers and buyers, private sellers and parts suppliers. And when I looked at Renault and Alpine section, I discovered an electrifying advertisement... Someone wanted to sell his Alpine, which was still registered, accident-free and had several months of MOT, for just 10,000 DM. And of course, I young badger, had not these 10,000 DM in reserve. For better understanding, the dollar was worth about 1.70 DM at that time. The only advantage was that not many people had read this ad because the day before there had been merciless celebrations everywhere. I struggled all night whether I should go to the bank on Monday and get the money. I decided against it with a heavy heart, not least because I still had 20 months of the civil service ahead of me and it would be starting in 1988. Later, I always scolded myself for it... There is more to tell about myself and Alpine, but I'll leave it at that. Except perhaps one more note: Only around 5,500 of the old A110 were built and are now sold for upwards of 40,000 euros, depending on the condition the cars are in...

@IWrocker , @Tommy-he7dx is right. In the days before commercial sponsorship, in international racing/rally cars were painted up the the team's traditional 'national colors'. Take a look at old Matra F1 and sports racing cars, they're the same color. Bugattis from the '20s-'30s too. In addition to the colors Tommy called out, US teams were either blue with white stripes (like Shelby Daytona coupes and Dan Gurney's 1967 Eagle F1 car) or white with blue stripes (like many road-racing Mustangs). Japanese teams were white..and I can't recall what Australian or NZ cars were. Historic side-track: originally, racing stripes were painted up top over the side of the car (either left-hand or right-hand side) that the driver sat, so that the race marshals knew what side of the car to check on the driver after a crash.

You mentioned the blue color of the Alpine 110.
There is a long history of these colors. In the early days of racing, without any sponsors, in the big events like grand prixs, it was more or less nation against nation.
Therefore, the cars from certain nations sported a certain color.
Italy was red, France was blue, England was green and Germany was white. And that stayed like this for a very long time. With the exception of Germany. They changed to silver (silver arrows). And the reason for this was just, that at the evening before an important race, the marshalls found that a german car from Mercedes was too heavy. So during the night they tried to solve this problem by stripping the car, drilling holes everywhere, but to no avail. In the end, they removed the white paint, so that there was only the blank aluminum left. So now they had a silver car. And afterwards, Mercedes and Auto Union always raced their cars in silver.
At least, that is how the legend goes.

In Brazil, we got the Alpine A108 (including convertible) under Willys-Overland brand as Interlagos(name of a famous racetrack). The biggest aesthetic difference from A110 is a shorter wheelbase and the design at the rear, with two big grilles to refrigeration. They are a bit rare and very pricey now, but so cool to see rolling at streets...

My dad and I have been considering buying one of the newer A110s for a couple of years now, still a little bit too expensive for a 'toy' car, though. Did rent one a couple of times, they are fantastic to drive, they also look MUCH better in person than in pictures.

Alpine's association with Renault goes back to when the first Alpine was created, in the 1950s. Alpine's founder Jean Rédélé started the brand in Dieppe, France; he was a car dealer who also was involved in motorsports; he took the bones of the Renault 4CV (basically a French VW Beetle with two extra doors and a water-cooled inline-4 instead of an air-cooled flat-4 out back) and created the A106, the first Alpine model, using a fiberglass-bodied two-door coupe layout in 1955, this would lay the groundwork for future Alpines, be it Alpine or Renault (Alpine was bought by Renault in 1973), with the rear-engine, RWD architecture.

  • @TOAD69500
    @TOAD69500 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Although not Rally bred, Alpine has always focused on rally, and has been pretty successful on that front as the creator of Alpine Jean Rédélé was a Rally driver.
Alpines cars were mostly based on Renault's using their platforms, engines and parts (although parts from other French brands like Citroen and Peugeot could also be found on them.) This goes back to the very first Alpine (a106) which was based on the Renault 4CV this is because Alpine started as just a Renault dealership.
The a110 is based on the Renault 8, which on it's own was already very successful in Rally especially the more sporty tuned Gordini version.
I've been lucky enough to have grown up around some of these cars, my family being one which mostly uses Renaults and my uncle having quite the collection various Renaults and Alpines.
This includes my dad who currently still owns an 1970's Alpine a110 (1300) and an Alpine a310, both haven't run in a while and have some issues which need fixing but I have driven along with him when I was a small child, and have vague memories of sitting in the tiny rear seats of the Alpine (which really are child-sized and I probably wouldn't fit in today.)
I have yet to get my own drivers license but once I do, and the Alpines are ready to go back on the road I'd love to drive one around for a bit. (if my dad allows me.)
Although sadly my dad is planning to sell the a310 but he's promised to keep the a110 and bring it back to running order.

The origenal 1600 Gordini engine did sound about the same. With 2 double 45DCOE Weber carburators. Lancia Stratos came after this 1974 to 76. Rallycars are also legal roadcars. They had to produce 5000 of it to get it homologated. It is pronounced with an ee. I have seen it in the wild and even competed against it . After that they could produce 500 so called homologation specials, with dedicated parts, like engines, gearboxes, suspension, lighter carrosserie, differentials and so on and on.

The Alpine Renault 110 was originally based on the Renault 8 a new model in 1962 with RR drive inline 4 with 1050 cc and 1150 cc engine around 1965/66 the engine sorcerer Amedee Gordini developed an optimized crankshaft and multi-carburetor engine for Motorsports use with 1.300 cc and up to 137 bhp acceleration to nearly 220 kmh. Zero to sixty in 8.5 seconds, very fast for the late sixties.
Alpine was an independent carmaker at that time using Renault technology.
From 1965 on Alpine started at regional Rallye competitions in France one of the famous driver co-driver pairings was Jean-Paul Nicolas and Jean Todt between 1966 and 1971. Renault did win the Rallye world championship of the marque in 1973 with these Alpine 110 after more than 6 seasons..

In the mid-eighties a neighbour of mine had one as a daily driver, while I drove a 2CV. The car was already a collectible by then, and it certainly wasn’t the obvious choice for a city dweller living in a small third-floor apartment, and having to park his car kerbside in a small street, but so he did. He and his wife were rather small in height and built, and getting in and out of the Alpine certainly kept them agile. If they kept the car it would have been a sound investment, these things have certainly five to six times the value now that they had back then. But then he would be in his eighties now, which definitely isn’t the right age to use this car any longer, except to look at it.

There are road going versions of these cars from both eras. I've always pronounced it "Alpeen".
The original car was a rear engine, rear wheel drive, fibreglass body car mounted on a steel chassis that weighed around 620kg, (1366lb). It was fitted with engines sizes from 1.0 litre to a 1.6 litre. It's power started out at 51hp and the later models had anything up to 140hp. The full Race models were obviously a tuned to a higher horse power.
The 2017 version is an all Aluminium body, 1.8 litre engine with between 249 and 300hp weighing 1,103kg, (2432lb).
In the Monte Carlo rallies of 1971 and 1973 the finish positions for first, second and third were All Alpine A110's in Both years.

The A110 was the most successful Alpine made while Jean Rédélé (the founder of Alpine, a reseller of Renault cars who would get Renault parts, tune them to the max, and go compete on mountain rallies) was still alive. Alpine ended up being 100% owned by Renault, that then changed its name to Renault Sports - think Benz's AMG or BMW's M2, but for Renault. There was a concept car a few years ago that tried to revive the Alpine brand, and it was so successful Renault decided to re-rename Renault Sport as Alpine and make a new one.
Main competitor is the Porsche Cayenne, but where the Cayenne is heavy, tech-enhanced and powerful, the "new" Alpine A110 is (very) light (think Lotus Elise), relies on a mechanical chassis as efficient as they could make it, and a fine-tuned 250 BHP 4-cylinder turbo. When it came out, many complained that it only came with a dual clutch robotized 7-speed gearbox and no limited slip differential, but that machine has been balanced to work very well with the first (in sport mode) and to hack an equivalent using ESP with the last. The car looks really good, the inside is a bit austere... But only the least objective German reviewer managed to drive it without getting a huge kick out of it. When tested by Japanese reviewers, they kept comparing it to Japanese rice burners (too expensive, slides too much, only 4 cylinder etc.) - but they couldn't get that goofy smile off their faces !
    Heh.

At the time of the first car races, cars in Europe had colors depending on the manufacturing country. White for Germany, Blue for France, green for the United Kingdom, red for Italy. Other countries did not produce cars and the sluggish US "trucks" were incapable of playing in Europe's backyard. Very slow.
The "Alpine A110 Renault" preceded the Stratos, another legend with Audi Quattro. There was also the R5 TURBO (Renault) and the 205 GTI (Peugeot), two other legendary French cars.
