What's your favorite version of the Guardians?
This and the MCU versions are my favorite as well as the DnA version as well
The D&A ones, Al Ewings and this one really.
The D&A version, cause the comedy isn't as omnipotent and the team can be a little more hard edged.

As a fan of the Guardians comics who has been disappointed by their MCU versions I thought this game was a wonderful blending of both. It’s apparent the creators loved the characters and the source material and it showed in every second of gameplay.
I love both versions, but I honestly like the game version a bit more. I’m definitely interested in why you didn’t like the Mcu version.
@@ammonite0257 I’m not a fan of the MCU and I think Guardians was the point when a lot of the humour started getting out of control. They have their moments but compared to the Sci Fi Epics of the comics I just find them very disappointing.

My thoughts exactly, it was clear the writer actually knew the source material beyond just the films and as a long time fan of not just the Guardians but Marvel cosmic in general for years, it was nice to see these versions of the characters, and the many deep cuts references added to it

Honestly, as much as I'm looking forward to seeing Adam warlock in the new guardians movie. It sucks because that version is coming right after his appearance here, which is like, on of my favorite versions of the character ever.
After this, Resident Evil, and your Doom retrospective, I definitely need a GOW retrospective and a Bloodborne video in the future

Although i loved the MCU guardians movies by Gunn, this game made me fall in love with them, so much so that it motivated me to read almost all their books, stories and even try to write some of my own, something that the movies never achieved

I really appreciated that personal touch in the end, Mateo. This is definitely my favorite version of the GOTG too. It’s been a minute since I played this game, and this video is really making me want to jump in for a second play through.
Well, this one is at least somewhat comic themed, but I miss the days, when you converted less huge stuff like Head Looper or Paper Girls before the show. But that image is Spider-Man over the tangent about character regression is savagely brilliant! I missed your videos down to even the editing style!

I would love for this to become a long running series of games. My favorite thing about gaming is that you can explore and live in a fictional world for longer than any other medium. I loved everything they did with the game play and the story. I hope there's more to come.
I've reviewed hundreds of comic book games and this is easily among my favorites, even gave it GOTY in 2021. I bought it on PS5, played it on Game Pass, and then went out and got the Xbox version. I believe Eidos Montreal has a few projects in the pipeline, a new Deus Ex among them, but I hope this team gets back together. Jon McLaren is a great guy, he streams on Twitch and has a blast with his audience.
This was absolutely my GOTY in 2021 and its probably the game ive replayed the most, great analysis!

I loved Guardians of the galaxy video game it was really awesome and such a great game that gets the source material right and seeing this team get there own game was really awesome and tons of fun at least in my opinion, I am still sad this game this didn't sell well because the game itself was really awesome and fantastic and did the team justice and I would've really loved a sequel to this story because its really awesome and tons of fun at least in my opinion.
It literally is the perfect blend of both the movies and the comics. They did such a good job with these characters
Loved this game and version of the team. After beating it, I can't look at the movies the same way since I will always think of this game. Wish there would be a sequel, but at least we'll always have this wonderful little game.

Okay, I'll admit that I was completely new to the Guardians when the first film came out and didn't have much exposure after that, either (I saw both GotG films as they came out and really enjoyed the Telltale game, as I did enjoy their stuff) - it wasn't until about the time of this game that I really decided to dive into it. In recent years I'd been doing deep dives (well, not compared to the overall history, but often going back at least a decade or two, which was quite the daunting task when I took on the X-Men titles), so somewhere around when this game was released, I decided the Guardians would be my next target (I can't remember if it was before I started playing, while I was playing, or after I beat it) and decided the right way to do it would be to go all the way back to Annihilation (after reading a few comics published about each character before, including that Thanos comic that included a pre-Annihilation Starlord). I loved the Abnett/Lanning era Nova and I think Annihilation was the strongest of the events to bear its name (Conquest and subsequent events didn't quite work), but the post-Annihilation Conquest Guardians were such an interesting group. I was sad when I got to the Bendis run, particularly as Rocket took a giant left turn into a psychopath who keeps yelling "Blam! I killed you", and it even made me a little disappointed in the Gunn films because of the feedback effect it had on characters I enjoyed in a different form (I don't really blame Gunn, but it is sad we don't get the badass Ronan or the highly effective Drax).
As mentioned in this video, this game had its problems but the characters are a great combo of comic & film & original (my favourite ever version of Mantis, great Cosmo, too) with a very strong story. I really hope we somehow get more (with Richard Rider Nova, please)
I LOVE this game. I was expecting a decent mass Effect like Marvel game and got instead a emotional rollercoaster that i truly loved. It also introduced me to more classic Marvel cosmic themes like Adam Warlock and Magus. This is a game i will go back to many times. This is also my favorite versions of the Guardians.

Great video! Didn't know much about this game so this was so interesting to watch.
I disagree with the problem you have on Gamora I thought a lot of stuff with her was more subtle though out the game and the buildup to her moment was more subtle than the other characters. I think with her and groot you actually have to look harder to learn more about them in certain details. I did not think it was a problem or was something that lacked focus. Good video by the way.

Oh yeah, this game was an absolute blast. This was definitely my game of the year for 2021.
I was really disappointed when the MCU Guardians came around and were so aggressively different in tone from the comics. Especially Star Lord.
I had my misgivings when this game was announced, because on the surface it seems like it is so inspired by the films. I was blown away to see how much love for the comics came through. Peter's personality is clearly inspired by the movies, but there is so much nuance to his history and motivation that comes from the comics, that I ended up liking him way more in the game than I ever did in the films.
Same goes for the rest of the GotG. They were all so brilliantly realized. A lot of the snark and sarcasm that defines their cinematic counterparts is balanced by this lovely gravitas of decades of comic history. Delightful.

This game is absolutely delightful and is easily my favorite portrayal of the Guardians - taking the best parts of the comics and the best parts of the movies and putting them together! The story telling and character writing are both on point, and the soundtrack is nothing to sniff at either, the score hits where it needs to and the clever use of classic 70s and 80s hits rivals the movies. And as a rock fan, I appreciate that they made an entire original 80s-style rock album that has some legit bops that have made my regular rotation! They did NOT need to go that hard on the Star-Lord album but I am SO glad they did 🤘🏽

My favorite thing about this game, other than the great characters, is how filled to the brim it is with easter eggs to popular & obscure stuff. The devs clearly were huge comic fans.
Guardians of the Galaxy have a special place in my heart because of the James Gunn movies. Probably the best character and world building the MCU has done, helps that Vol. 2 is imo the best MCU movie (hyped for Vol. 3). Also really like their comic runs such as the Abnett/Lanning, Cates, Ewing and even the Duggan run. But I agree on the vulnerability element that makes the Guardians stand out and their outlandish space adventures are just window dressing for the real story about found family. Not a gamer, but I’d love to play this game if ever given the chance. Great video as always Matt
I had a marvel DND game with friends and it was a running joke that Disney would steal our ideas and even the lethal legion was our group name. It was so funny to me I died laughing
This was a great video. I have seen people who really like Gamora in this game and say she has a lot more personality, and character depth and they were very satisfied with her character in this game. In fact people use Drax, Mantis, and Gamora for examples as characters that were improved in this game and done better then the mcu.
There is a lot to love here but one of the big ones is the main villains . They could have played it safe with and use Thanos ( I was pretty sure he fake his death ) Ronan, Skrulls or well any know Marvel galactic supervillains . But they went with a the lesser know villains like the Church and Magus . But it worked . I think it made the story unique and challenged the characters in a deeper level .

When I finished it, all I wanted was more. I would love to see this version of the guardians go on so many more adventures.
Square says every western developed game the own “under sold,” or “didn’t meet sales expectations.” They use it as an excuse to not develop franchise from their subsidiary developers.
If you do stories about super heroes, I wonder if you will cover vertigo Hellblazer, The Books of Magic, Promethea, or Miracle Man.
This game, as a Marvel Cosmic fan was such a love letter and easter egg fun for me. Seeing Jack Flag, Darkhawk and Moondragon in the Nova Files made me lose it. It took a subject of getting over loss and perfectly framed it in a space epic. I wish the comics reflected these kinds of stories more in terms of Marvel Cosmic. Plus my god they got Adam Warlock down perfectly. Starlin Warlock to a T. I hope they do a sequel. I want Super-Skrull and Silver Surfer in the next installment.

I was so suprised when I played this game.. When I spent 40 minutes in the opening scene listening to the entire tape from the starlord band I knew I was in for a good time

This game was a pleasant surprise for me because when I heard the game was coming out I was not excited at all especially sense Square Enix made a terrible first impression with the Avengers game but when I heard the game was actually getting good reviews and alot of my friends were playing I wanted to get the game and when i played it I loved it. Hell I would say I preferred it over the movies and this is coming from somebody who enjoys the movies.
Amazing game! Hopefully the love people are expressing after the fact could get us some form of a sequel.

I full on expected this game to be a shoddy remix of the movies like the cartoon but I was actually surprised at how I was enjoying the game.

Arkham Origins! Would love to see you do a video on that one. It's gotten so much of a bad rep in the game community but I think it does a lot of things right with his story that you don't see much of anywhere, even in the comics.

The Only problem I have with the game is that you only control Starlord and not given any chance to switch to the other members of the team. I mean honestly I would love to switch characters to play through the games itself.
I feel bad cuz I was definitely one of the people who skipped over this one at first because of the whole Avengers thing. Still, I hope the death of this series can bring Deus Ex back at least

I’m sad this game will probably never get a sequel. It’s story was great and the gameplay was really fun.
I must play this before it leaves Game Pass. I tried playing the Telltale game a few years ago & gave up at the start of Episode 4. The plot idea was good but the writing was grating.
Definitely a game I played about 4 times through. Good long story but some puzzles that were just kinda silly. Overall awesome tho

Love the game except one awful decision that made it so I haven't even seen the end credit scene. Actually put me off originally buying it. Favourite scene was Drax and Star Lord talking about the afterlife and that.

I couldn't get into this game cause of the combat. Quill's blasters felt overly nerfed and thus the character you're controlling is the weakest on the team. Sounds like I missed out on a good story though.
