  • Understanding UNDRIP & Bill C-15
In this special episode of the Warrior Life Podcast, we talk to two leading Indigenous legal experts about Bill C-15 - the federal legislation intended to create a National Action Plan to ensure Canada's laws are compliant with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).
Professor Brenda Gunn and the Honourable Murray Sinclair help us understand the human rights protections contained in UNDRIP and they address the many concerns and misconceptions related to Bill C-15.
The Honourable Dr. Sinclair is Anishinabe whose list of accomplishments is very long as he has worked as a lawyer and professor; associate chief judge of the provincial court of Manitoba; co-commissioner on the Aboriginal Justice Inquiry of Manitoba; Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada; Senator; and now works at the law firm of Cochrane Saxberg.
Professor Brenda Gunn is Metis lawyer and professor at UofM law, who is a well-known expert on international law and done a significant amount of international human rights work including: research to promote greater conformity between international laws protecting Indigenous rights and domestic laws; community legal aid clinic in Guatemala on a case of genocide submitted to the IACHR; provides technical assistance to the UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples; AND she wrote a handbook about understanding and implementing UNDRIP.

I picked two Calls To Action (49 and 94) to respond to and work on as to what they mean to me as an individual and as a Canadian. Thank you everyone for this. I will integrate it. Very important for world peace in my opinion.🎹✨😺💫🎹

I remember being aware of the 1977 report against discrimination. It was a shock that the original peoples were even organising. It started my awareness of the injustice they faced from the settler bigots. An aboriginal lives matter moment for me.

So deep, gives me so much more understanding of the generational trauma. People say, “forget about it it happened so long ago” but it still hurts to see the destruction of the earth especially with this oil and gas pipeline

Thank you so much! This was so greatly informative!! I'm currently studying Indigenous Social Work at Laurentian University. I recently had a project that focussed on creating 2 implementable projects for the TRC calls to action. I would love to get them from paper to out in the world. I also created a puppet show for the same class in order to teach the calls to action to the larger collective audience. I've only created the pilot episode, which you can view on my page. I would love to see it grow further as you had mentioned, not everyone knows about these declerations and what they mean to be implemented. Miigwetch!!

Good fundamental moral laws must not be ultimately based on 'The Doctrine of Discovery.' Get real!
