I remember these back in the day. I think they were one of the fastest 0-60 in its day of all the hot hatches. I could never find one back then let alone now. This the most underrated of all the hatches.
The car is soo underrated that I recalled myself while sitting on the toilet seat "there was a cool guy car in my childhood called charade gti, where are they now" and then I searched TH-cam to find this review on top. 😁😁
I have a daihatsu charade from 1990, its the standard 1 liter 3 cilinder charade. It does have a story she is 33 years old and at this moment she has about 19200km on her, we got her for free in 2020 with only 1600km on it. I love driving in it and she gets used daily, will cherish her forever and make sure she stays in tip top condition.
I just finished refueling my 1990 Daihatsu Charade SE hatchback on my drive home from work. I bought it in February 2015 in Woodbridge, Virginia with 27,500 original miles on it and drove it home with my dad to the Kansas City, Missouri Metro area. It now has only 46,485 original miles (74,810 km) on the 1.0L EFI (non-turbo). My parents, sister, and I have owned six of these over the years since Daihatsu brought them into the U.S. in 1988 until 1992. The coolest one my Dad got ahold of was from an U.S. Air Force officer who'd shipped his Daihatsu Charade GT from Australia back to the U.S.A. and my Dad happened to purchase it. That little car would burn the tires/tyres off the front end through the first four gears and finally hook up in 4th, sometimes 5th gear. I love my little Daihatsu Charade! Wish I could share a picture with y'all.
Had a 91" myself in Red, frightening thinking it was 30 years ago when I was a whipper snapper. Absolutely loved it & I had it breathed on so it made 140bhp which I'm afraid was a little too much for the poor engine with my heavy foot. The local boy racers had the usual Fords, Swift's, Pugs, Vtec's & R5's etc but I was the only one with a GTti as they were rare as rocking horse even in the early 90's. So rare in fact that the dealer I bought it from offered me more than I paid him 2 years earlier when I went in for a chat one day hehe. R5's were supposed to be the one to get, but even those local to me were fodder for my little tweaked Charade which was no mean feat. So many happy days until I blew the head gasket at an indicated 135mph (down a hill with a tailwind lol) & sneakliy moved it on in part ex for a Carlton GSi 24v - I'd grown up a little lol. Always said I'd get a GTti again but impossible to find a decent one so I gave up many years ago.
Had one of the first into the UK with steel wheels. I was about 21 at the time. Traded it in for a CRX VETEC and eight years later traded the CRX for M1 Lotus Elise 111S that I still have. Charade was huge fun. The CRX capable of going round corners at speeds much faster than I ever realised until I overcooked it one day and sailed round a 90 degree bend with no drama. Elise proved tricky for someone used to front wheel drive!!! Also had Suzuki Ignis Sport.
I owned a white one back in 2005, had it a year and the rareness was one thing I loved about it plus the noise. I ended up selling it for an Almera Gti. What a mistake, I’ve always regretted selling it
I had a 1st generation Suzuki Swift GTi from new. Once I sold that I had a Daihatsu Charade GTti for around 4 years. It was a pretty quick car too. Not quite as quick as the Renault 5 turbo. Mine was a white one. I sold it for £1500 if I remember.
I'm keeping one of these since 2016, well, not a GTti but G102 which is 1.3 4 pot lump. Only 10HP less but sounds better than a 3 pot imho and definitely more reliable and easier to maintain. Finding parts for them is a pain in the arse now, have to look worldwide, as there are still some left in Australia or Malaysia, even went to Germany to pick up a spare bumpers, lowering springs and few other bits lol. Worth keeping as it have solid chassis, almost no rust at all. Once it's fully done I'll feature it in a a video for sure.
Found a Cuore L701 for my first car and would love to find some auld lads who had some of these to maybe see if the little 1 liter 3 cylinder EJ-DE could be made into a EJ-DET, if you get me 😎
this is my mom's 1st car... still remember she used to drive this & drop me at school before heading to her workplace... eventually she sold it & replace with hyundai, i think if i had idle money, i wanna buy this just for the good old memories....
I owned one of these a long time ago, it was a little weapon. Hilarious fun and wasn't that thirsty if you drove it sensibly. Mine had 120 BHP and could easily light up the front wheels.
I am in the process now of restoring a white 1 with 50k on it that a imported to the uk from jersey Its all welded up now and in process of prep for paint Cant not wait
Not seen one for years! My sister had one when I had a R5 GTT little between them on the back B roads Northampton to Cambridge. That engine was years ahead of the time
I have been a passenger in one of these years ago, such a fun car! And pretty quick because it's so light. Funny detail is the light on the dash between the dials that goes on when the turbo is producing boost. Rust is a killer for these, shame really! And also very reliable.
I had a Gold colour 900 cc 3 cylinder base model. Ice cold AC in Florida heat and good speed to pull out in traffic. Got a speeding ticket in it after owning a 300zx and never getting a ticket. Thanx for the memories.
I was born in the 70s, I can remember the charade gt-ti and the Suzuki swift gti, uno turbo ie, polo g40. Fast cars in there day plus very light, iv got a 208 1.2 turbo gtline at 1070 kgs with 160 bhp and 220 ibft, the charade weighed 850 kgs. 7.9 0-60 and 115 mph was pretty fast back then. Have to say though I loved the uno turbo ie. great car.👍
I had one in 1988 white, they actually claimed 7.7 secs to 60, 99bhp doesn't sound a lot but my god did it feel fast, a little green turbo light used to light up on the dash and whoosh of it went I'm 66 now but it was one of my favourite cars and I have had them all R5 Gt turbo Toyota starlet gt turbo etc etc loved the Daihatsu wish I still had it.
Loved mine. J921HJR Really regret selling it. Had 2x12 CV subs from K&M Acustics in Wigan in the boot with a full custom build Phonix Gold and Hyphonics Amps. 130bhp from RE Performace in Bury totally reliable (apart from killing clutches) and so much fun. Really do regret selling it.
In our family we have owned 3 of theese, first my uncle owned 1 from brand new in white when first released in the UK, then my brother owned a silver E reg and then me and my brother bought a white J reg which we sold on due that it needed to much work as the the floor was rotted out. Amazing fun car and I so whish I had enough money to own another. The only one I found in the UK is a red G reg left hand drive for £9000.There are a few for sale I noticed in Italy tho. 😁
I had 3 GTti's back in the early 2000s. Stupid me i sold them all. 2 slightly modified GTti's with Koni*H&R suspension and around 120hp and 1 very rare widebody "Flash GTti" with roughly 140hp. I wish i would have kept them. Pure and simple driving experience, no electronic, no ABS.
I not long sold my mint 1 owner from new one and use dot own the ex works rally car. Really underrated cars and they do sounds mega with a decent exhuast system on. Think I've had about 5 of these car. They really do drive well and make you smile like a cheshire cat. Neaest thing this it I've driven is a Mini Cooper S R53.
E929WVU Was mine and I owned it in 1993 and it was in silver, had a traffic light race against a 1.6 Orion Ghia injection, all he saw was my back end 😂
i just saw one parked in a barn, just sitting there, not sure if it was a gti, it was a charade turbo, with some plastic things on the side of the rear window.
Yo tengo la versión sencilla, también 993 pero sin turbo, es muy buen auto, ya no consigo las piezas pero aun funciona, me gustaría alguna vez conducir un GTti.

I had one and the Suzuki swift gti 1.3 TWIN CAM
One on autotrader right now
Bit slower than a 5GT Turbo phase 1 but the Charade use to actually start and also not stall for no reason in 2nd gear and not start for 10 minutes.
@@SwiftgtiGranTurismoSport 2 my mates had gtti I had a white swift gti wasn’t as fast but the engine was one of the best sounding

cool little feature for the Daihatsu lovers!! nice for the GTti to get some TH-cam love and recognition it deserves :D
I loved the fact these were only 1.0 Turbo’s back in the day. Now there’s loads eg Ecoboosts etc so it’s not so different. Great video.
12V was very rare back then also....
These had 0-60 at 7.7 seconds. Top end of around 120 ish.....

Sound crazy
Starlet was the one ..if you know ..
in malaysia, we still have plenty of this charades. very cool little hot hatch, especially the espri detomaso
Awesome video. Old cars are much more interesting than new supercars.
I had 2 of these in the 90s, first one I wrote off within 12 days the second I enjoyed a little bit more before selling on, absolutely loved them

I had 2 of these in my teenager years, wish I kept them :( fantastic little run about and being so light it felt quite rapid on the B roads
Its like a honda city turbo, mixed with a 90s clio and civic, wicked!!

1 litre 3 Cyl turbo about 25 years ahead of the curve. Diahatsu were the nuts.
Little 3cyl turbo sounds like a baby V6. A mini 3000GT Twin Turbo or something similar.
My first car was a 92 charade. It was painted metallic green, low rider...truly a chic magnet 😂
I drove this car many yrs ago and tried buying it 4yrs ago I love them
